When his family is threatened, a shifter must choose between high school and a life of crime. For the past six hundred years the Byrd family members have been shifters with avian powers. Seventeen-year-old Rolf is the only Byrd who transforms into a dog. Rolf knows that when his mom looks at him, all she sees is a mutant, but Rolf has plans for his future that go beyond shifting.Rolf is using … beyond shifting.
Rolf is using senior year to shoot Desperate Dawn, a film that he hopes will win him a prestigious scholarship to the University of Southern California. If Rolf can convince Summer Hathaway to be his leading lady, he’ll be golden. But when Rolf finds twenty dead ravens on his porch, shifter problems show up at his door.
Snake bites, wild coyotes, and drive-by shootings–Rolf’s neighborhood suddenly becomes a deadly place to be. Summer’s douchebag boyfriend makes it worse, especially when he attacks Rolf’s sister. Rolf will do anything to protect the people he loves, even if it means giving up on his dreams. Hopefully, he won’t have to.
Shoot the film. Get the girl. Save his family. It’s a good thing that Rolf can fight like a dog.

I’ve only read two other books by Louise Cypress, Slayer Academy: Secret Shifter and Bite Me. Both of these (each separately reviewed) were so good that it’s clear to me that she’s well on the way to becoming a fave author if the quality holds up. It has more than done so with Shifter’s Wish (Fight or Flight, Book 1). This is a wonderful book, perfectly plotted, filled with well-crafted characters and superbly written. The publisher’s blurb captures it perfectly: “Shoot the film. Get the girl. Save his [bird shifter] family. It’s a good thing that Rolf can fight like [and shift into] a dog”. Full of thrilling action, this is a wildly fun ride to read. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
Shifter’s Wish (Fight or Flight Book 1) by Louise Cypress is an amazing story that I loved reading. This is book number one an amazing start to a brand new series . I highly recommend this story if you love reading about shifters in your stories.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
“You’re our Byrd-Dog.” So states Rolf Byrd’s grandfather, Frank.
Rolf is a shifter in a family of shifters, but instead of shifting into an avian like the rest of the Byrds, Rolf transforms into a dog. His family is involved in some shifty businesses (sorry for the pun), along with the shifters in the families Serpenthe (serpents) and Ferrell (rodents).
Rolf just wants to make his short film, “Desperate Dawn”, in order to earn a scholarship to USC. Oh, yeah, he also wants to win the love of Summer Hathaway. And survive High School as The Munchkin King, so named because of his short stature. All the while dealing with his Mother, a Static (non-shifter) and annoying but loveable younger sister, Dory.
This book was very entertaining and LOL funny at times. I enjoyed the typical HS shenanigans between Rolf and his friends and foes. I am definitely outside the target age for the intended readers, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. The author presented unique types of shifters and I loved the fact that the shifters could change into a variety of animals, as long as they were within their species.
Another unique thing about this book was that the shifter families were like Mafia families, with all of the family members involved in the family business (which were slightly less than honest). Rolf was a loveable MC, trying to survive through various trials as a teenager and as a shifter.
The characters were well-developed and likeable (or unlikeable, as the case may be) and the story built at just the right pace. The only drawback? It ends on a cliffhanger! Now, I have to wait to be able to see where Rolf’s adventures take him next. As he says, “I didn’t know how far I’d go- or what I’d do- to protect the people I loved.”
I was given the opportunity to read this book by the author and chose to review it.
This story has been exciting. It is so different from most of the other books around that I have read. It is centered more on Rolf and his sister Dory. There hopes and dreams for themselves and for there future. The fact that there Mother does not want them to be around their Father’s family has been hard on the kids. Rolf is almost 18 now and soon he will be able to say what and do what he wants. It is an awesome story and the author has hit so many things on the head. Two kids against the world (from their perception) has been awesome. I love the story. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
Problems of a tonnage boy growing up
This is a story about a boy that is a canine shifter and his sister isn’t. He wants to go to college after high school to be a maker of films. But he gets pulled into a shifter situation that his mother doesn’t want him in. He also finds a shifter extension to his family that he’s like to know. This was a good good about being a brother, shifter and a high school student. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Interesting Look into a new shifter series. I was pleasantly suprised by this story. The enjoyed learning the dynamics between the shifter families, the plot as well as the characters. I really enjoyed this first read and I’m looking forward to see where this story takes us.
Great read with shifter’s in 3 groups – birds, rodents, and serpents. Each group has a particular skill set. Rolf is a dog shifter in a Byrd family. He is a bit different than typical shifters as he is a drama geek and not really built like most. They don’t call him King of Munchkins for nothing. I enjoyed his relationships with his classmates and his family. Story was fast paced and did end on a cliffhanger. Can’t wait for #2!
Can Rolf have it all?
Shifter’s Wish by Louise Cypress, the first book in Ms. Cypress’s new series, and it’s fabulous. In keeping with her paranormal young adult stories, this one takes place within the same world as The Puritan Coven series, but we don’t encounter any vampires. Instead, we have shifters in the same universe as the vampires.
Rolf Byrd
Rolf Byrd is the main character of the book and the only point of view. He is the single Canine shifter in existence for quite a while. Except his family is mostly bird shifters which Rolf doesn’t seem annoyed about but feels that they treat him differently. His dad died when he was young and was being raised by his mom and his dad’s family when his mom was too busy working as a cop. Rolf is a brilliant young man and loves films, including old movies. He is making a short film so that he can use that to go to USC for his degree in film studies. Rolf has learned a lot in this book about not only himself but his family on both sides.
Likes
• He is protective of his younger sister.
• Old films.
• Rolf being a dog shifter.
• Loves his family even if they are a bit weird.
• Wants what is best for his friends
Dislikes
• His feeling of conflict between his mom and his dad’s family
• That he is at a disadvantage around the Byrds
• Having to choose between his mom and having a relationship with his dad’s family.
Five Stars
Shifter’s Wish by Louise Cypress is another fantastic book from this author, and I can’t wait to read Shifter’s Kiss. Ms. Cypress’ books have a magnificent way of blending everyday issues with the paranormal world, and they make you think while entertaining you at the same time. Anyway, I was hooked from the first chapter of Rolf’s story. Therefore, I am giving this book five stars since it was marvelously delightful. I am recommending it for all the paranormal young adult readers out there.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Shifter’s Wish by Louise Cypress.
Until the next time,

Rolf is getting ready to film the short he has been working so he can enter a scholarship to his dream school. He is also hoping to finally get a date with his dream girl. He and his sister find a bunch of dead birds on their porch and that leads to a whole new set of worries for him.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to seeing what happens in the future for Rolf, Summer, Dory, Lenox and Rain.
A fantastic read. I love the way the storyline goes on this read. It pulls you in right away, especially if you love shifter type reads. Rolf shifts into a Dog. This is Mystery read as well. The Author has done a fantastic job at telling the story and bringing out the Characters
Its fast paced and action packed as well as humorous. It also has you on the edge of your seat, I did not want to put this book down. Its a real page turner. I definitely recommend this read.

I was given this arc from the author for free in exchange for an honest review.
So enjoyable and extremely cute.
Great worldbuilding for what I thought was a quick cute read.
Rolf is a dog shifter amongst a family of Byrds.
Senior who is trying to shoot a short film, get the girl, and spend time with his family.
I love Rolf and Dory and Uncle Gabriel.
Momma cop is super annoying though.
Ughhhhhhh.
Shifter’s Wish is super adorable but so cliffhangery!!!
Ahhhhhhhh!!!
I can’t wait for the next book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I write weird reviews.
I absolutely loved this take on shifters. I loved the whole sarcastic and witty side to the story, which did not prevent enjoying the deeper issues covered. Rolf and Dory are great characters, flawed, full of teenage angst and hilariously funny at the same time. The whole vigilante and organised crime aspects worked beautifully too. I can’t wait to find out how it progresses!
Another great read from Louise Cypress!
Rolf comes from a long line of shifters, but shifting into a dog sets him apart in the Byrd family. His plan is to make his short film, Desperate Dawm, get a scholarship to USC, stay out of the Byrd mafia, and maybe, just maybe, hey a date with Summer Hathaway. His mother wants him to aim low and go to San Diego State University, pretend his family doesn’t exist, and never shift again. His granddad wants him to move on to their compound, and use his dog shifting abilities to do things birds can’t.
Normally I stuggle when a female author writes from a male perspective, but NOT the case with Shifter’s Wish. Other authors would give Rolf a very one track mind, but Louise definitely covered her bases and every layer of this story is detailed and amazing. There is not a bit of this book I can’t picture in my mind. I am eagerly waiting for book two.
So good. So very very good. This book is fabulous. Rolf and his sister Dory are seventeen and fifteen. He wants to get a scholarship to film school and has written and is producing a short film. He is also a canine shifter and the shortest guy in school. This book is so funny and also quite serious at the same time. I cannot wait to read the next one.
As an advanced reader of this new and upcoming book I am leaving an honest review.
This book had a solid foundation built into it. It moves well with characters going through normal yet paranormal lives. It was interesting seeing how the author pulled in so many society problems while keeping the book light and interesting. Family dynamic, school, friend clicks, society influences young emotions and coming coming of age all wrapped up in a story. Would continue the series to see where the characters end up and what else they have to deal with.
