Ever since Ignacio left my life, I have found myself just going through the motions.I’m not pining for him.I just don’t feel the need to replace the love I still feel for him. Until Porfirio shows up. Tall, dark, and handsome, there is something so familiar about him.But like Ignacio, he only sees me as a poor, helpless princess. This time, I refuse to just let him slip from my life.He has … I refuse to just let him slip from my life.
He has changed me, and now I don’t know how to let him go.

In this prequel we meet the Champion Porfirio, a jaguar shifter, who had joined the Champions when he was young, mostly because his father had been one. But now he is starting to feel the exhaustion of his continual travels and searches for Seers through the years. He’s even questioning whether or not it’s time for him to retire but he’d never been entirely certain of his place, but he knew that it wasn’t close to where he was born, so he had no idea where he would retire even if that’s what he decided. During his travels around the world he learned about the Unwashed sneaking into the Seers’ capital and had heard about the withdrawal of the Champions since the Seers would not listen anymore. In the meantime, a magical pull had taken him as far away as he could get from where cat shifters normally went but he knew he could help the Seer he was sensing. What a great way to prepare any reader for the 12-book “Shifters of Brigantia Collection”. Not only did it give me a clarification of the roles between the magic-wielders and the shifters who worked with them. The Guardians, The Champions, and the Assassins – three organizations who aided the Mystics, Seers, and Druids. This was a quick, easy read but I loved every moment of it and would definitely recommend it.

Porfirio is a Jaguar Champion who is thinking of retiring, but is unsure what he would do or where he would settle. Princess Halo is a Seer who is not aware of her heritage. I enjoyed this Prequel to the Brigantia series, especially how protective Porfirio is.

If you have read the stories of Brigantia, and especially the Assassin Ignacio’s story, you already have met Halo and her brother,. Halo is a seer, but without any training she is struggling with the side effects. 10 years later another cat shifter arrives in Wodel. Porfirio is still looking for undiscovered seers to train them t least to the point that they do not suffer from their gift.
He is drawn to Halo, sensing her gift and genuinely likes her brother.
A typical story of Brigantia in one way, but unusual as far as there are no plots to kill the guardian or the seer. Still a lovely story, entertaining and sweet.

This is a very short prequel (can be read in less than 2 hours) introducing us to the shifters who live in the land of Brigantia and the MC of this short story are Champion Porfirio and Princess Halo. This was a great introduction to a new series and even being so short it was a great way to spend an afternoon and I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Champion Porfirio is finally feeling exhausted from all the searching for Seers over the many years. He even started to consider retiring. He just wasn’t sure what would make him happy. Three organizations — the Guardians, the Champions, and the Assassins — aided the Mystics, Seers, and Druids. And because Porfirio was a jaguar shifter, he had joined the Champions like his father, so he could travel and see the world. He had learned about the Unwashed sneaking into the Seers’ capital, and he had heard about the withdrawal of the Champions because the Seers simply would not listen anymore. He was as far away as he could get right now where cat shifters rarely went. But a magical pull got him to venture here. He knew he could help the Seer he was sensing.
A lady-in-waiting, Eliza, tried to get Princess Halo’s distracted attention. Her brother King Havoc wanted her to help finalize plans for a ceremony in her honor and to find a suitor for Halo. She once more tried to put it off and Eliza got pushy, getting reminded that she was becoming too bold lately, as Eliza went off muttering about how stupid and stuck up her mistress was. Halo did not want a suitor. If Ignacio, the panther who had saved her and her brother, had stuck around, she would have chosen him. As soon as her brother had visited her and left, the Baron came in to again pressure her into accepting him as suitor, not willing to listen that she had no interest in him. When a male voice insulted the Baron, Halo thought at first it was Ignacio, yet the male was larger than Ignacio. Then the man, Porfirio, tossed the Baron out and closed the door, stating, “I’m afraid I will not be quite as exciting as the Assassin Ignacio, but I will be far more entertaining than the clod ejected from the room.” She had a ton of questions for him, asking if he changed into a panther like Ignacio, then seeing his blond hair with dark spots.
Soon King Havoc burst into the room with guards, but sent them away when he saw Porfirio who reminded him of Ignacio. But while Ignacio was an Assassin, Porfirio was a Champion and both had different roles for dealing with magic users. He explained that Halo belonged to one of three existing magical species in the world, the Mystics, the Druids, and the Seers. Seers could never hurt people with their magic, and were natural healers. He was here to help her control the magic and minimize the headaches she got. And unlike the Guardians and Assassins, Champions have no magical abilities whatsoever so worked well with the Seers. He taught her about being assertive, meaning what she says. Then people will stop pushing her around as they currently do. And eventually, she won’t need the protection she needs now.
As time went on, she realized that even when Porfirio disagreed with her, he never dismissed her thoughts or opinions. He listened and talked to her like an equal. When the disrespectful Eliza returned to say she should get her job with Halo back, Halo handled her like the royalty she was and told her she had a job only because of the kindness of the Queen. Porfirio talked with Havoc and said Halo seemed ready to handle things on her own now. But when he went back to tell her, she instead asked if he missed his home, if he had made plans, and if he would consider staying with them. He did not want charity, and she made it plain that was not what she was offering him. With a soft, “Oh,” he took her in his arms and kissed her. It was nice to finally be “home”.
This will definitely prepare the reader for the 12-book “Shifters of Brigantia Collection” and I loved how it clarified the roles of the magic-wielders and the roles of the shifters who worked with them. It’s a quick read but very helpful for the reader’s understanding.

Porfirio heads to the distant Wodel Kingdom in search of the seer he can feel there.
Wodel Kingdom is a small island off the shores of two large empires at the distant end of the world from the shifters and magic users but jaguar shifter and Champion Porfirio can feel the presence of a seer there so he makes his way by the most direct route to reach it as quickly as possible. Coming out of the ocean he makes his way inland to where he can feel the seer. Princess Halo is not looking forward to the event her brother has arranged for the next day to introduce her to the eligible men of the kingdom plus she has a headache associated with her ability to see the future. When her Brother King Havoc comes to talk to her his friend Baron Brecht takes the opportunity after he leaves to harass Halo with his attentions until a stranger come through the window and expels him from the room.
