She wants to bang a werewolf, not become one.Sophie Burroughs is determined to be a witch. Her grandmother was a witch. All the other supes say she smells like a witch, but she can’t cast a spell to save her life.Sprouting fur is so not on her to-do list. But when a smokin’ hot werewolf bites her and then accuses her of crimes against his pack, she has until the next full moon to prove him wrong … until the next full moon to prove him wrong and stop his magic from transforming her into a wolf.
A romp in the sack would be a nice bonus, too.
Trace Thibodeaux didn’t mean to bite Sophie. The red wolves have been cursed, she’s the prime suspect, and if he wants to keep his rank in the pack, he has to end her magic by any means necessary.
But that doesn’t include sheathing his sword in a witch’s scabbard.
He’s gotten into bed with the enemy before, and that’s a mistake he’ll never make again.
Or will he?

This is book 2 in Carrie’s New Orleans Nocturnes series of paranormal rom-coms. If you haven’t read that book, please start there!
Shift Happens picks up where License to Bite left off, and Sophie’s in trouble. After a run-in with what she thought was a dog at Jane’s Halloween party, Sophie quickly learns it’s no ordinary dog bite on her arm, but one from a werewolf. She doesn’t know it yet, but it’s a good thing she doesn’t seem to show any competency as a witch despite everyone commenting on her spiced apple cider scent. That would only complicate matters more.
And complication certainly happens when Traces walks back into the picture. Hot as sin, he’s hard to resist! Better yet, he sees Sophie the same way, at least, he does when he’s not investigating her.
Picking up where Book 1 left off gives this one the advantage of not having to introduce everyone from scratch, and Carrie takes advantage of that, getting right to the good parts! I LOVE how fiesty and unashamedly herself Sophie is, even if she doesn’t have the best track record with humans. It’s honestly my favorite part about her.
Showing she really knows her characters, Carrie writes about some really sweet and soft moments between Sophie and Trace that don’t happen with Jane and Ethan, highlighting the completeness of her understanding of the world in these books. You get sucked in and you don’t want to leave! I really hope they get to give it to the coven in Book 3, which I cannot wait to read! I don’t want these books to end!
Shift Happens is book 2 in New Orleans Nocturnes series that delves into the lives of New Orleans less than human residents. I read this book first, and honestly had no issues keeping up and catching up. The book is written in third person omniscient from both leads’ point of view.
The book was fairly fast paced and exceptionally irreverent. It didn’t take itself too awful seriously, so it was still fun. Trace and Sophie had a strong connection from the start, and I suppose that actually led to a number of their situations, so the story was mostly about them figuring out a mystery and how to make the two of them as a couple work. There are drop ins from the previous book that were fun, too.
The book is extremely lighthearted, with lots of flirting, a bit of steam (not particularly descriptive, but open door), some adventure, a little action, vampires, werewolves, witches, and lots of dogs.
So I know this is book two but at the time I read the blurb and instantly borrowed it from KU not realizing that until I was already engrossed. I will be reading book 1 after I am done this review. So here goes.
Humor perverted, sarcastic, and plentiful. Meet cute: well awkward, sexy, funny, and not as cute as you would hope (I laugh just thinking about it). Characters: Amazing. I love Sophie. Not only was she easy to relate to she is also upbeat and persistent in the face of adversity and I like that. I didn’t stop laughing the entire book and I cannot wait to continue the journey with these characters.
Funny, hot and slightly bonkers
I couldn’t tell this is book 2, but the next in the series is obvious at the end. Imaginative mix of shifters, witches and vampires, some great humour and a bit of crazy. I need to read all the books. A fun read.
I listened to this book and from the get go i was chuckling. It was a good read. I would recommend this one if you like shifters and witches.
This is my first book from this author and i will be looking into her others.
She has a way of making humour come out evenly throughout the book without it going over board. The story kept you interested. A good hook to see to the end.
Even though i haven’t read much in the way of shifter’s with witches it was interesting mix for green eyes.
Really enjoyed the narrator, loved the story had so many laugh out loud moments. I really enjoyed what Carrie wrote. Really like the mix of supernatural that we get in this book. Really liked the narrator it kept me listening and interested. Overall loved it.
Although this is book 2 in the series, it is a standalone.
This was a brilliant light hearted romance. Sophie has followed her best friend and moved to New Orleans. Now that she knows about the supernatural, she wants to fulfill her dream of being recognised as a witch; after all she has her late grandmother’s grimoire, so she must be a witch.
Getting bitten by a werewolf and being accused of cursing the werewolf pack was not in her plans. Trace just wants to find his best friend and he thinks he knows just the witch responsible, only he hadn’t counted on biting and being so attracted to her.Together they try and solve the mystery of the missing wolf.
I loved the interactions of all these characters, the lighthearted humour just made it so much more entertaining.
The narration from Hollie Jackson is top class and she brings such a warmth to the characters that you can’t help love them. I would definitely listen to other books narrated by Hollie.
Shift Happens: A Frightfully Fun Paranormal Romance by Carrie Pulkinen
Narrated by Hollie Jackson
Shift Happens is just as funny and feel good as License To Bite was. Carrie Pulkinen is on my must listen to list. I would suggest you listen to this series in order. It will definitely be worth your time. They had me laughing out loud. Sophie and Trace are a perfect blend and add Jane, Ethan, Gaston, Crimson and Jackson in the story is full of witty dialogue and New Orleans charm. I look forward to listening to the rest of the books in the New Orleans Nocturnes series.
Hollie Jackson also narrated this book and it is wonderfully brilliant. Her accent was great and she really hit the laugh factor. I will be keeping my out for other books narrated by her.
Oh I’ve loved all of Carrie Pulkinen’s stories because they are always just so much fun to read! Shift Happens is definitely a hoot to read and now I’ve listened to this audible version and thought Hollie Jackson did a fantastic job with her theatrics and voices bringing these spunky fun characters to life! I absolutely loved all of these characters all their quirky ways! This is a very enjoyable and entertaining laugh out loud book and audiobook that I recommend to anyone that loves a fun paranormal story whether reading or listening! NOW I can hardly wait to get my hands on the next in the New Orleans Nocturnes!
I’m really liking this series. I love all the characters. The stories are well written. I loved the banter between Trace and Sophie, and there chemistry was off the charts. Look forward to reading the rest of the series.
From page one, the book is hilarious! I loved every moment of this easy read. This has everything I look for in a light and fun book. The main characters are on point with their humor and hotness! Such a cute PNR! I’ve already downloaded book #3!
Shift happens – what a perfect title for this tremendously written story. When I first read this title, it sparked my interest. After reading the first chapter… I. Was. Hooked.
The story revolves around Sophie, the ‘kind of ‘ witch, who is at the wrong place at the wrong time. She stumbles into Trace, who accuse her of something that becomes a hilarious misunderstanding. As the story continues to unravel, I couldn’t help but fall in love with these characters. I cheered them on, I laughed and my jaw dropped from the amazing one liners.
This story that Carrie Pulkinen has created will not disappoint. It has everything from relatable characters that will sneak their way into your heart, the right amount of romance, a pinch of adventure, mystery, tension and a dash of perfectly executed puns and one liners.
If you’re thinking about reading this, do yourself a favour and do it. But make sure to clear your schedule because once you start, you won’t be able to stop.
This is a romance with a bit of something extra, a dash of fur and fangs set in New Orleans and the French Quarter. Sophie Burroughs is a lady who loves animals, she has a dog walking business, a grandmother who was a witch and the who would love nothing more than to be one too and a best friend who is a vampire, but she also wants to get together for a night of passion with a werewolf. Trace Thibodeaux just happens to be a werewolf trying to find his best friend and relive his pack from the curse that they have been under since he disappeared, he is tall, handsome with a bad boy attitude and he doesn’t want to make repeat mistakes while trying to do this.
We meet sophie when she is with her best friend Jane trying desperately to work a spell to get a stain out of her shirt which was written by her grandma in her grimoire, but try as she might and in various states of undress, she is not succeeding, so when the frustration of it all gets to her and she shoves the grimoire to the floor, the last thing she was expecting to hear was that Jane had found a prophecy on the last page of the grimoire. Thinking that it was about her deceased dad on first glance, but when they read through it again, Jane realises that it’s actually about Sophie and that some parts of it have already happened, she has arrived in New Orleans and the other day a werewolf bit her at a halloween party! It is the next couple of lines which are both ominous and strange, but no more ominous or strange as her not being able to join the local coven and there being no uproar about the bite in the first place when it is illegal.
Trace is following Sophie, she is under surveillance by the pack because they think she is the one who is forcing the shifters to uncontrollably change form one form to the other and as one of the only unregistered witch, she is the most likely culprit, especially when he sees her walking 5 male dogs together on leashes, but he cannot hide the feelings her scent triggers in him, which is why he bit her in the first place at the party and he can already smell his scent mixing with hers as the transition to werewolf is starting, which is a massive problem and he has to rectify it because if she does complete the transition, her inborn ability with animals will make her a strong wolf and a risk with her ability to possibly control other alpha’s. He cannot ignore his feelings no matter how hard he tries and while he is following her as she finishes her rounds and drops the dogs off home, he nearly loses her, but sees her going into a coffee shop.
Sophie enters the cafe, she has had the feeling that someone was watching her, but couldn’t see anyone there, however, and thinks about the guy from the party, why the witches won’t help her and how this coffee shop is run by a witch, but she hasn’t yet broached the subject with er, however, she is jolted from these trains of thought when she sees Trace outside the window, she forgets all about the coffee and goes outside to find him. She doesn’t find him, however, she does find a dog in a muddy pothole and thinking it might be lost, decides to take him home to give it a bath and look for it’s owner the next day. What she doesn’t know is that it actually is Trace and that he has been forced to shift into his wolf form and that she is going to take full advantage of this opportunity to go into Sophie’s house and look for his friend, but the plan backfires on both of them when he shifts back and Sophie has to call in Jane as a reinforcement.
What will this pair do now, will they be able to resist their urges, or will they be torn apart by the two worlds they live in?
Shift Happens: A Paranormal Romantic Comedy is the 2nd book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series by Carrie Pulkinen. This is not your average paranormal series. These books are hilarious and light hearted. While you don’t HAVE to read the books in order, the story line does continue and characters and timeline overlap. And they are great, so do yourself a favor and read them all. I am already working on book 3. This book is the story of Sophie and Trace. Sophie is the best friend of Jane (from book 1). Sophie moved to New Orleans to follow her bff, and to follow a fortune teller prophesy. She believes she is a witch, since her grandmother was a witch. She wants to hook up with a werewolf, but that wish came with a little too much baggage attached. A were bites her by mistake, and it is the start of a whole series of problems. But its not all bad, it does bring her teamed up with Trace- smokin hot cop by day, werewolf by night. The banter between these two is hilarious and had me hooked from the start. There is so much sarcasm in these pages, you will be in tears from laughter.

This story was so brilliant! I loved every minute of it. I was kind of hooked after I read the blurb but once I started reading it exceeded my expectations. The storyline was quirky and funny and I loved the characters, they made me laugh so much. I just adored the main characters, especially Sophie! The connection and back and forth between her and Trace was funny. Although this is the second book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series it’s easily read as a standalone which is how I read it, it’s also the first time that I have ready anything by this author and I cannot wait to read more of this series! I loved this book so much and would definitely recommend it to others!
This is the second book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series. This story follows Sophie on her quest to becoming a witch. Trace, an insanely hot werewolf, accidentally bites her. Now he must end her magic to save himself within the pack as they think she is the enemy. Sophie now has a time limit on proving the pack wrong. Can she do it in time?
Shift Happens is the second book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series by Carrie Pulkinen. In book two of this series you get to learn more about Sophie Burroughs and her witch abilities. Along with learning more about Trace and there blossoming relationship. Sophie has a friend name Crimson who we get to learn more about her and Trace’s friend Jackson. one thing I loved about this read was even though it was centering around Sophie and Trace we still got to hear about Jane and Ethan. This read is funny and entertaining and it really keeps you captivated. I really look forward to reading book 3 in this series and i hope we can learn more about Jackson and Crimson.
I have read a couple of books from this author and she still continues to blow my mind on her storytelling. This is the second book of the New Orleans Nocturnal series. You don’t need to read the books in order but there are previous characters in this story as well. I love a good paranormal book but this author exceeded all my expectations on this book. I was so excited when I got this book I stopped everything and started to read it immediately. I couldn’t put it down until the end. It only took me a few hours to devour this addictive story.
Sophie is supposed to be a witch like her whole family. She has been told she even smells like a witch. Sophie wants to be a witch so bad but she can’t cast a spell for nothing. She finds herself in trouble with a werewolf pack. Sophie meets Hot Trace, who is a werewolf. He bites her to protect his status. His pack is cursed by a witch and Sophie has to figure out how to prove she is innocent or she too will become a wolf. Will Sophie find a way to prove that she’s innocent or will it be too late?

Rating 5 out of 5
This is the second book of the series, New Orleans Nocturnes. And just like the first book License to Bite, it’s absolutely hilarious. All Sophie wanted was a hot werewolf lover. But after Trace bites her at a party. Sophie needs to find out who cursed Trace’s pack before the next full moon or she gets wolfy. I also cannot believe this cliffhanger. Once again I cannot wait to read the next book to find out what happens to Jane and Sophie’s friend.
SHIFT HAPPENS is the second book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series and features Jane’s best friend, Sophie, and Trace, a werewolf.
Following on in the same lighthearted rom-com theme, we find out that Trace is a red wolf shifter and is searching for the witch that has cursed his pack. All the registered witches have denied it so that only leaves unregistered ones. Sophie is top of the list. Her grandmother was a witch and Sophie wants to be one.
I enjoyed this book more than the first. Whether that is because I have got used to the writing style or whether I liked these characters more, I’m not quite sure. Either way, this was a fun read that made me smile.
I would have liked to have known more about Trace and his past. For being a First Lieutenant, he’s treated like a newbie. Just what did happen with the nymph that makes all his prior history disappear and that one mistake hang over him like a neon lightbulb?
Fast-paced and amusing, this book can be read as a standalone although it does feature characters and relationships from book one. All in all, this was a really good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
