WINNER TAKES ALL Travel blogger Gwen Williams is about to live the dream—competing in the annual Annual Explorers of Islay competition. She’s up against some stiff competition, namely legendary gamer and four-time champ Cody McKay. The seriously buff hottie and shameless flirt is going all-out to seduce her. That’s when Gwen lays her cards on the table: She never, ever mixes gaming with … ever mixes gaming with romance . . . until resisting Cody becomes a losing proposition.
As Gwen gives in to temptation, everything’s in play for a major heartache. With the rounds heating up and players eliminated, she knows she’s gambling a lot more than a seat at the final table in Vegas. But Cody’s kisses promise more than a fleeting romance. If she plays her cards right, Gwen just might walk off with the championship and the man of her dreams.

Great Game. If Hefferman’s friend Maggie Dallen’s latest book was a Hallmark Movie of the saccharine sweet variety, this one is closer to one of the rocky road jalapeno ice cream variety. Still mostly funny, but deals with some weightier issues in a mostly sweet manner with a hint of burn-your-mouth spice. Hefferman takes several risks with her characters that are rare, and that is much appreciated by this particular reader. The narrator is a gamer – and not a video gamer, which has gained a degree of acceptance in mainstream modern society. No, this narrator is a *board* gamer. And bi. And one of her best friends is demisexual – an orientation I’ve literally only seen used in *one* other book. And the driving narrative force is a board game tournament. And there are several weighty issues that could drag the book down, but Hefferman deftly keeps the focus on her primary couple as they haltingly get together. Excellent work, I’m very much looking forward to the next one. Very much recommended.
This book is worthy of 3.5 stars if that was an option. The author came up with a great topic for a romance book that I haven’t experienced before. I love the whole gamer girl aspect of the book and really liked our main character, Gwen. I think the book went a little slow for me at times with the inner dialog and Gwen not knowing her worth. I know that internal conflict is normal, it just slowed down my reading of the book some. I did enjoy this book enough that I want to complete the series, I’ve already downloaded book two and I’m ready to read it.
If you want a sweet, cleaner romance with a girl that loves board games enough to pay them professionally, this is definitely a good book for you.
Since my kiddos are tired of playing board games, I decided to read about them instead. Even though Gwen, the main character made me mad at times for her tendency to assume the worst about Cody, the way they came together through competition was so real and the humor made me feel as if I were hanging out with dear friends. This was a treat.
Just couldn’t get into it.
A little young for me. This is about game players.
SHE’S GOT GAME by Laura Heffernan is the first book in the gamer girl series. We meet Holly, Shannon and Gwen who have known each other since college and are all gamers. She’s Got Game main focus is on Gwen. Her mother left her and her Dad when she was only 10 years old. Now 30, Gwen still cannot understand why her mom left her and has never even tried to contact her in 20 years.
Gwen and Holly enter the annual American Explorer’s of Islay annual competition. Since Gwen had a bad experience dating a fellow gamer, she has sworn off ever dating someone she competes with until she meets Cody. Cody is the Champion for the past four years and Gwen’s main competitor.
The non existing relationship between Gwen and her mother is heartbreaking as well as Gwen’s resolution of realizing her mother will never be in her life. The up and down romance between Gwen and Cody at times devastating and at times funny. The friendship with Holly and Shannon is something we all need in our lives. I am not a gamer, but I loved this book. Thank you to Lauren Heffernan and Kensington Publishers for a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
This book gives you a glimpse into the world of people who play games for fun and tournaments. The intensity, thrill and agony all rolled into one. Gwen feels like this is her last chance to make the final round. Standing in her way is the last champion for the past 4 years. Cody is a good guy but Gwen is having a hard time believing that. Every time the chips are down, Cody seems to be there for her. Now can she step outside her comfort zone? Can she let go and let true love in?
She’s Got Game is the first book I’ve read by Laura Heffernan and I now can’t wait to read more! I Love all the characters but Gwen & Cody are of course the focus, I am a sucker for a romance but love when an author knows how to give the story a twist or several in this book, so looking forward to reading more in this series soon!

I have never read this author but this story sounded different and fun and boy, Laura Heffernan did not disappoint….I loved this story!
Gwen Williams is a travel blogger and spends most of her time traveling around, blogging about it. Gwen also enjoys playing board games and is determined to make it to the final table for the American Explorers of Islay Competition. Her biggest opponent is Cody McKay, a tall, sexy guy who is enjoying flirting with her. Because of events from her past, Gwen refuses to hook up with gamers and tells Cody so but he is completely unfazed. He just keeps working on Gwen until she finally gives in. Just when it looks like Gwen will be getting everything she has dreamed of, her past come crashing back into her life and causes her to crumble.
Gwen is going to have to take a huge gamble with her life if she truly wants her happy ending. Thankfully she goes all in and we get a perfect happy ending!
I just adored Gwen. She may have had some hard demons from her past haunting her but when she can finally come to terms with these, she finds that she can have the life she has always wanted. Now as for Cody…..he is just delicious! Sweet, sexy and very loyal. He is laid back and sounds just perfect and together they make a wonderful couple. Overall I loved this story and the characters and I can’t wait to read more from this author!
She’s Got Game is the first book I’ve read by Laura Heffernan, and it was so delightfully different that I’ve thought about the story and its characters quite a bit since finishing. In Gwen Williams, we have a heroine who’s bisexual (I can’t recall ever reading about a female protagonist who digs both guys and girls in a RomCom before), a travel blogger (what a cool job!), and in her spare time, she games at a competition level. All of these qualities add up to one very unique and compelling character.
When the story opens, Gwen’s got her eye on the prize, winning the American Board Game Championship in Vegas, but she has to get through a lot of smaller tournaments first. One of her main competitors, Cody McKay, is gorgeous and more than a little cocky about his prowess at the gaming table, and sparks fly from the moment he and Gwen meet. Fearing he’ll be a major distraction, Gwen tries to keep her distance, but you know what they say about best-laid plans. Can Gwen trust Cody, or is he playing her? He does seem to have secrets, but then so does Gwen.
Romantic confusion isn’t the only issue Gwen has to deal with when she realizes that her job might not be sustainable and the lives of several people close to her implode. She thinks she can fix everything by winning the big game in Vegas, but what lengths is she willing to go to make that happen? Win or lose, the stakes have never been higher for Gwen.
I rode an emotional roller coaster with Gwen throughout this book. She brought me to tears several times and made me want to shake her a few others, and I loved every minute of it! She felt real to me, with strengths and flaws like all of us have. I really liked that not all of the issues in her life were easily resolved and she had friends who called her out when she was messing up, but were still always there to support her. Speaking of her two besties, Holly and Shannon, they were both really interesting in their own right and I’m jazzed that they’ll get their own stories in this series. I never thought I’d root for a twenty-something character to get smoochy with her friend’s father, but after reading She’s Got Game, I am ‘shipping Holly and Gwen’s dad, Nathan, hard! They are both in dire need of some good lovin’, and I am here for their romance.
As for the central relationship in this book, I thought Gwen and Cody had great chemistry on the page and their romance developed in a believable and organic way. The love scenes in the book were just the right amount of steamy for me, hot, but never raunchy, and leaving just enough to the imagination. Although Gwen and Cody both made mistakes along the way, I never doubted that they would be really good for each other.
She’s Got Game is an original, entertaining, and briskly-paced book with well-defined characters and a romance I won’t soon forget. I’m excited to see what else the author has in store for this series.
I received a copy of She’s Got Game in exchange for an honest review.
I’d like to get this out of the way first: I found Gwen extremely frustrating at times (seriously, just *talk* to the guy!), and I admire Cody for his patience with her.
Besides that, though, the story had so many things that I enjoy in a book: A swoon-worthy hero, two BFFs who kept Gwen grounded (and whose stories I can’t wait to read!), a geeky game tournament with lots of trash-talk and some serious nail-biting the closer we got to the finals, some twists I did not see coming, and some really nice wordsmithing painting a vivid picture (no, not a Monet…).
I’m really looking forward to reading Shannon and Holly’s stories!
I am still deciding how to feel about the story. I truly loved the writing and the story per se but sometimes I just could slap the main character until the lightning stroke her brain.
As the title says the book is about playing games, about attendance in national competition of board game called Explorers of Islay.
Gwen is competitive, loves to travel and grew up without a mother but with a loving father who taught her the love for board games. But growing up without mother left her with deep scars of not understanding and feeleing unloveable.
She doesn´t date gamers, she´s been burned badly in the past but when she meets Cody she wants to change her mind and is willing to try.
Except Gwen has got so many issues she needs to sort out first that it seems almost impossible task.
Like I said I loved the plot, the competition, the love and attraction which was feelable through the pages but Gwen´s personality was quite difficult to understand sometimes.
So for me it´s just 3,5*
Living your life playing games, it seems like a great life.
Gwen is also a blogger, and likes (no loves it) to travel. Reading the description, I did wonder if Gwen was more of a dungeon and dragon type player. (The game was fairly simple. Players rolled a pair of dice, then collected cards with different “resources” on them. The resources could be discarded to build various structures. A bad roll could result in losing cards, and the first player who got to ten points won.)
Cody loves to win, and there is nothing he won’t do to make sure he comes out on top. He seems like a nice guy, until he hits the tables, then all bets are off.
Cody and Gwen meet at the gaming tables. There is lots of “trash talk” and a little flirting. But although Gwen finds him cute, she won’t date a gamer. (She did once and got taken advantage of, so she swore never again) But as the games proceed, Gwen is finding it harder and harder to resist him.
Then the inevitable happens ….. Gwen doesn’t know how to process the night they spend together, her emotions are running high, she second guesses everything.
So will Gwen give Cody another chance? What happens when the game ends?
You’ll need to read to find out
Well written and thought out. Hoping Shannon and Holly get stories and they are Gwen’s best friends.
That was a fun read
