From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You, the basis for the major motion picture, comes the touching, unforgettable story of three generations of Irish women faced with the fundamental truths of love, duty, and the unbreakable bond that unites mothers and daughters. Estranged from her mother since she ran away from her rural Irish home as a young woman, Kate swore a future … a young woman, Kate swore a future oath that she’d always be a friend to her daughter, Sabine. But history has a way of repeating itself, and Kate now faces an ever-widening chasm between herself and her daughter. With Sabine about to make her own journey to Ireland to see the grandmother Kate abandoned, Kate is left wondering how they ever made it here, and what she can do to close the gap between them.
For Joy, seeing her granddaughter is a dream come true. After the painful separation from Kate, she’s looking forward to having time with Sabine. Yet almost as soon as the young woman arrives, the lack of common ground between them deflates her enthusiasm. And when Sabine’s impetuous, inquisitive nature forces Joy to face long-buried secrets from her past, she realizes that perhaps it’s time to finally heal old wounds.
“This perceptive…novel does the mother-and-daughter thing in page-turning style.”—Elle

Read this one after thoroughly enjoying two other titles by this author. Neither the plot nor the characters held my interest… I found myself skimming through the first half of the book and at that point I forced myself to finish it.
Great writing. Interesting characters. Engaging story.
Compelling read. Great characters, good setting.
This book has a really slow start. Eventually it ended up being an ok story. Just not one of her best works.
More good storytelling from Jojo Moyes. An absorbing read.
This book tells the story of three generations of Irish women:
• Joy – raised among high British society in Hong Kong, who marries a handsome naval officer at the end of a whirlwind romance
• Kate – Joy’s daughter, a single mom, whose rash actions as a teenager force her to leave the …
One of Moyes’ early novels I understand, I ordered this book because I have read all her other books to date and loved them so much.
This is a novel I definitely will read again, as I do when I enjoy a book and it has a certain depth to it. I loved the way the characters reflected on their lives.
Hard to put down, complex story-line, romantic, …
I have read most of JoJo Meyes books and this one was not as gripping as others. It took 100 pages for me to get involved in the story and want to read on.
extremely too many words, nice story but I skipped pages to finish. I like jo jo myers but story too long.
Slow start and the generation stories varied in terms of holding my interest— a twist at the end…
JoJo did it again. Great read. Charaters are real and I enjoyed the book. If you like Jojo, you will probably like this one too. Not as tear jerky as Me before you.tc
I really liked this book and the characters. I loved the way the story evolved and built each character.
Good multigenerational story.
Loved it!
I loved this book. Enjoyed the differences between the generations and how each of the women grew into better people no matter what their age.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Moyes does a great job of showing the way a teenaged girl thinks about her mother, her life, etc. The characters were realistic and flawed but likeable. The setting of Joy’s life growing up was interesting–I have never read anything about the lives of military families stationed in Hong Kong post WWII. I thought the …
It was confusing at times, switching from characters and places, and each time I read a few chapters, I had to go back a few pages to get reoriented on a particular setting. I like to read books that carry the story from beginning to end.
