She begged God to rescue her. He said, “Go.” So she headed out into the blizzard. In a car that wasn’t exactly hers, with a dog who wasn’t exactly a rat terrier, she drove. Until she ran out of gas in the small Maine town of Mattawooptock. Mattawoopwhat? What on earth is God thinking? But it is there, in a weird little bathroom in a weird little church in a weird little town that Maggie Hansen … finds herself. And as God would have it, she finds a lot more than that.

Such a delightful story about finding good in difficult situations
The storyline is not your typical romantic story. Some of the characters were unique and/or witty (Hershel & Dale, Gertrude, and even the code guy) and I enjoyed the book. However, there were gaps in the storyline. The ending seemed rushed almost as if a page limit kept the author from developing the story further. (One example: there were several hints about the ex boyfriend coming to find Maggie but nothing happened and was dropped without closure to that relationship.)
With that said, if you enjoy a clean romance with a happy ending, this is an easy read and might give you a break from typical plots. I appreciate the fact that I didn’t have to wade/skip through language and sex scenes.
Something you don’t find is a true focus on biblical scripture. This book incorporated biblical teachings in several chapters. (Thanks!)
It was a sweet story.
Light hearted and clean reading. Able to just relax and not “think” hard.
This book about homeless people was vey good! It pointed out some things about how hard it is for them & also added some humor.
This book promotes a deeper understanding of the homeless population and those who seek to understand and help.
Liked the Christian theme of doing right thing and helping others.
This books is an inspiration to be the best person that you can be at this moment in time. The characters all grow. It gave me a better understanding of the plight of homeless people in North America.
This was a beautifully written story. It made me cry, and laugh and feel good about the ending. It was very believable.
This book was a fun read! It was nice to read a story about a place where folks that are homeless can go and find what they need during this time in their life. This story gives you hope that God is always there for you and guides us to where we need to be.
I really enjoyed the min character and the courage she showed in facing the challenges and pain of past experiences and willing to open her heart and trust.
Shelter, by Robin Merrill, is a sweet book with an interesting plot. It deals with homeless people in a day when there seems to be a homeless person on every street corner. We are given an inside peak into the variety of reasons why people are homeless and get to know these fictional characters as real friends. I would have liked more depth to the plot development and at times the lead characters acted in ways that seemed contrary to their personalities. Nevertheless, it’s worth the read and I recommend it.
The characters in this book were realistic and entertaining. As a Christian reader, I was able to relate to the inspirational and religious beliefs of some of the charaters. Would read this again and highly recommend to others.
I really enjoyed this book, a great read.
A gentle read that had no page turning or cliff hanging moments. Once the main characters had been introduced, it was then only a matter of time. The dramatic moments were never fully exploited so there were no upsetting character deaths etc.
This could easily have been a much darker book if the characters had been expanded more. As it is, this is just an easy read and a nice story so don’t go expecting anything other than that!
I loved this book! The characters were great and I couldn’t put it down.
Shelter was an enjoyable read. The plot and characters were well thought out. The vulnerability and experiences of the homeless were well defined. I would highly recommend this book!
Great book! I can’t wait to read more from this author.
