The story begins with a frantic Jenny, who is dealing with a ticketing agent at the airline counter when an emergency has prompted her to fly home. When Devon overhears that she can’t afford the only seat left (in first class) he offers to pay her way. When she hunts him down back in New Jersey to pay him back for his kindness, the love story begins. Devon is the secretly ailing heir to multi-million-dollar company who stands to lose his inheritance to his jerk of a bastard brother if his illness is discovered. Under pressure to seem stable for the scrutizing Board of Directors, he enlists Jenny to repay his gesture by serving as his date to a critical professional function.
When Jenny discovers the forces working against Devon, she is motivated to help him during the two weeks the emergency will have her back home. She has a lot to sort out–she’s left her job and is less than thrilled at the idea of returning home to face her loveless relationship with her fiance. And she is more than a little tempted by sexy, sweet Devon.
As usual, L.G. O’Connor mixes romance and suspense, placing a well-written love story against the backdrop of intriguing family drama that holds a big twist and dovetails nicely with the other books in this wonderful series!
I really loved reading Devon and Jenny’s story. I had not read the first book in the series but this book could be read by itself. Devon is a kind-hearted man getting set to take over his father’s company but medical issues could stand in his way thanks to a stipulation made before his father’s death. Jenny is a sweet girl who is stuck with a wrong guy and feels like death surrounds her. A chance meeting in an airport sets in motion a flurry of adventure. Great read!
I loved this romance with its wonderful characters. Devon and Jenny met in an unusual way when he did her a favor by upgrading her ticket when she was flying home because her aunt was about to give birth to her first child. Jenny returned the favor by agreeing to be his date for his family’s gala, acting like they are in a relationship. Devon is very ill but he needs to convince the board that he is healthy in order to get the CEO position. Devon needs the position so that he can care for his ailing mother whose medical costs are huge. Even though he wants to be an artist and paint, he has put his dreams aside to become CEO of the family business and take care of his mother and sister. Jenny’s life was a bit of a mess at this time. She quit her job just before leaving for her “vacation” and, soon after, found out her fiance was cheating on her. When a picture of him with another woman is posted on Facebook, it’s pretty obvious their engagement is over.
While this story is quite a romance, there is a lot of drama and suspense to it, too. It’s amazing what some people will do to gain control of a company or for money. While Devon is trying to hide how ill he is, he also tries to figure out who is trying to take over the company and trying to kill him. His twin sister, Lettie, has a hand in figuring all that out.
Not only does this emotional, well-written story have lots of twists and turns, it has terrific characters. They were great and I just wanted to hug them.
I was happy to have received a copy of this book through Kindle Scout and highly recommend this book to romantic suspense lovers.
