From Nora Roberts comes the #1 New York Times bestseller Shelter in Place (June 2018)–a powerful tale of heart, heroism…and propulsive suspense. It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at video game store tended to … together, and the manager at video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived.
The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to bury the memory of huddling in a ladies’ room, helplessly clutching her cell phone–until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art.
But one person wasn’t satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait–and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

Good!
This thrilling romantic suspense novel illustrates why I am and forever will be a Nora Roberts fan! Spine tingling action, bone melting romance, and captivating characters all combine to make Shelter In Place a must read for all lovers of extraordinary storytelling.
After listening to Under Currents by Nora Roberts (which I loved), I realized I never picked up Shelter in Place last year, so I quickly downloaded the audio version of this book. This one was a little different from some of Nora’s past books in that the two main characters don’t meet until well-into the middle of the book. But it worked. Nora Roberts is one of those authors that I don’t need to know the subject of the book or what others thought of the book before I download it and enjoy every word. This one did not disappoint. And the audio version was superb!
Victims of a mass shooting must put their lives back together, even years after the act was committed. In the the meantime, the killer still lurks in the shadows and isn’t done with them just yet.
The book was excellent but I have to admit, a little hard to read at times-not because of Roberts’ skill as a story-teller, but because of how true to the times we are in. The beginning is heart-wrenching and a little haunting, so be forewarned. But it is a must-read, so don’t miss it.
Great book. Couldn’t put it down. Another great novel by Nora Roberts.
A wonderfully original storyline that held a few scary moments in that this is the world we live in nowadays.
I was a long-time Nora Roberts fan but for the last decade or so, I shifted more toward urban fantasy. I returned to Nora Roberts recently and one of the first books that I read upon my return was Shelter in Place. This book was a great re-introduction. Roberts takes a tragic situation: a mass shooting and builds a story of romance and healing and friendship. The story also has a bit of mystery and thriller, keeping the reader engaged in both the romance and the murder mystery. I really like this book and wish that Roberts would add a sequel just so we can check back in with the characters.
The beginning of this book is one of the most powerful reads. I cry every time.
Not my kind of read, but I finally finished it and if you like “real life” writing this would be an excellent read. I have decided I’m just too old for this much angst! I absolutely adore Nira Roberts and can honestly say ( even though I had to force myself to read this); that I am sure you will love this read!
In my opinion, Nora Robert’s best work ever!!! Heart wrenching introductions. Really hits home with present day issues, then, just as you think “I can’t handle this heart break anymore”, it flips into a humorous, magical, romantic thriller/drama. The characters are absolutely wonderful. I read the book 1st but then decided to listen to the audible also. That really drove this book home. You will, cry, laugh and really enjoy! Great for reading or listening in your downtime at home!
Wonderfully crafted, great characters, intriguing plot. Would have given it a 5 star but I found the sheer number of deaths overkill and terribly sad. Also find I am not interested in the sick and twisted mind and actions of a serial killer and it really wasn’t needed To develop the book. However the plot was fresh and well developed. Nora Roberts always delivers.
THIS BOOK. I don’t know how Nora Roberts continues to write so many stories that intrigue and enthrall me after all these years, but she does, and flawlessly.
The first 15 pages of this book were pretty traumatizing. I actually had to put it down for a couple of days before I could go back to it. I felt like I was THERE, in that mall, feeling what those people were feeling. Written from the perspective of several different characters, the shock, the pain, the absolute horror of it all comes through loud and clear.
As we follow the lives of these victims after the shooting, a complex and emotionally charged story is masterfully woven, drawing the reader further in with every page. I fell half in love with Reed myself, laughed at the silly dog getting his head stuck between the railings, cheered when Patricia was taken down, and let silent tears fall when Simone’s memorial was unveiled. It was a beautiful, moving, timely story – and as with all Nora Roberts books, I truly felt like I knew the characters intimately by the end.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for the ARE and the opportunity to read this early!
Nora Roberts never disappoints! This story follows three people who made it out of a mass shooting and are targeted years later. There are plenty of red herrings and this is the perfect blend of genres: thriller, romance, and survivor’s story.
I loved this book. She writes life as it is and still manages to suprise me. I don’t want to say more as it will ruin the book for others, but it’s a book I got Christmas morning and finished it in two days! Even managed to have Christmas dinner!!!
A very timely book and one I couldn’t put down once I started it. Nora Roberts at her best!
Powerful story. I don’t live in the USA but it started out like a horrific news story. The lives of the survivors and someone wanting revenge made for a brilliant story. I loved it.
In today world the tragedy of massive shootings is shocking. Nora Roberts brings you into the mind of shooters, the victims, and the impact it has on the families. Very well written Ms.Roberts.
This book was based on a very sensitive subject, and still was written so well , to tell that story story with a very careful hand, very well done, Nora Roberts
very intriguing. couldn’t put it down.
I enjoyed this book imensly because the characters seemed real and human. They didn’t seem like they were blank cardboard figures with no emotions. The story fast paced and thrilling, with a great romantic storyline. Nora Roberts does it again manages to create another wonderful book without using the same old plot lines just carried over to other books she has written, and placing them in different situatioms. I give this book 4 star rating because of its wonderful ability to keep me interested after all the other books i’ve read of hers.
