From Nora Roberts comes the #1 New York Times bestseller Shelter in Place (June 2018)–a powerful tale of heart, heroism…and propulsive suspense. It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at video game store tended to … together, and the manager at video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived.
The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to bury the memory of huddling in a ladies’ room, helplessly clutching her cell phone–until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art.
But one person wasn’t satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait–and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

Loved it couldn’t put it down.
The first 2 chapters are the best I’ve ever read. It sets up the story for the rest of the book and it just sucks you in so you feel you are in the mall with these wonderfully written characters!
This book was amazing. I shed tears, laughed, and cried some more as we walked through the lives of Simone and Reed following a major tragedy that ties them together.
Disturbing realistic,to events that have happened. the twisted mind of a mad person captured, engrossing story. Things born out of tragedy , how it changes lives and perspectives.
Perfect title for the way things are going in the world of 2020!! Nora Roberts does it again, this book deals with something that has been in the news so much (well not too much this year with the shutdowns), it brings you inside the horror of a mass shooting then she takes it beyond that in only a way she can. This story got me from the start right to the ending.
Taking it from the headlines and making it into a believable story. Typical Roberts, but always a good read.
Wow! I’ve always been a big fan…this had me sitting on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t put it down till I finished it. This went into such depth, I was really pleased.
Shelter in Place, my sixteenth read from author Nora Roberts. Outstanding romantic suspense. 15-hours 22-minute/464-pages. I’m voluntarily reading & reviewing it because every book needs reviews. Narrator January LaVoy’s outstanding narration adds to the book’s enjoyment, in this she’s saved her best for last. The only reason it took 6 days to read is because my wife & I listen to it together & our schedules don’t always mesh. I look forward to reading more from this author who needs to get the next romantic suspense book written. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
I could totally see this book being adapted for a TV series! It’s more about life after tragedy than the actual tragedy itself, so if you have been in a similar situation, I’d recommend skipping the first 20-40 pages. What makes this truly unique is learning about the twisted mind of the vengeful character who was not the star of the traumatizing event, but the mastermind behind it. That character reminded me a bit of Joe Goldberg from You.
The timing was was weird but I didn’t get the connection until I was finished. I recommended it to my daughter who bought the book (but has not yet had a chance to read it) .and a friend stating it was fantastic! I love Nora Roberts and have read many of her books and series.
Thank you Norma and continue to keep up the fantastic work!
I love Nora Roberts but this was not her best. The story starts out with a grisly account of a horrible mass shooting at a mall then follows the characters in the aftermath. You learn that a fourteen-year-old girl planned the shooting that was carried out by her brother and two of his friends. In her opinion, they botched it because they didn’t kill enough people and lost their own lives, therefore she spends the rest of her life killing off the survivors. Really? I get it that she’s a psychotic psychopath but her hatred of childhood bullies that called her “Fat” led to this? Not very realistic. I did love some of the characters though, like Reed – yummy, CiCi – a free spirit, and Simone – a strong woman, and the positive spin that they put on the story. Another narrative that felt forced was Simone’s family’s hatred for her because she refused to become their version of normal. You would think that after surviving the trauma of a mass shooting, your family would be more supportive and put their disapproval aside. I certainly did not like Tulip or Natalie.
Wow! Fabulous storyline. Very captivating and entertaining. Enjoyed from page one.
I have read many of Roberts books but this one is a favorite. Can not put it down with emotions ranging from tears, sadness to hate for the violence. Read it in 2 days~~want more.
Nora Roberts writes about a mall shooting. Descriptive from the start, she follows the woman who planned the shooting and several victims of the event. A page turning read that will involve you from page one. Emotional and evolving as the characters try to adjust after this life changing event.
Shelter in Place goes on my keeper shelf. I’ll want to read it again and again.
This suspense is classic Nora Roberts: packed with emotion. Though it starts with a shooting spree in a shopping mall, the story continues for a decade plus. The reader takes a journey with the characters as they grow (or not) and fall in love. Great action and dialogue with some steam between the main characters.
Totally loved this book and recommend to everyone, romance or suspense readers.
Shelter in Place is a great read. I hadn’t read a book by Nora Roberts for a few years, and now I am going to change that. All because of Shelter in Place. The story is so engaging and well written, the dialogue so engaging, and the characters so exciting I could not put the book down. Thank you, Norah.
Right off the top, this may not be a book for everyone – it starts off with a mass shooting in a mall, so you may want to stop right there.
But then it goes into the lives of the survivors, and the connections that keep them together – especially one woman and man who find their lives take a very different track because of the shooting and because of their survival. Yes, it’s a love story, but the reading might be rough if you or your loved ones have dealt with this type of situation, so please heed the warning.
Another excellent read, of course!

Rating:
I picked this book because our next move will be to DownEast Maine! It was also on sale @barnesandnoble It was well worth the risk to buy and read! This story shows you how tragedy can shake everyone to their core and how life can come full circle. You can avoid what happened or embrace how life changes and to move forward. This story will take you through disappointment, obsessions and new beginnings as doors close on the past. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a good read for October to bring a little edge to your reading. It’s not a full thriller but it’s a book that gives you the urgency to turn the page. I also commend @norarobertsauthor For writing about a topic that could lead into controversial reviews but enjoy the risk and stars all around!

Wonderful story, starts with tragedy, survival, courage, strength and love.
I’d forgotten how much I love Nora Roberts – I hadn’t read one for a while. She is a master storyteller. She even gets away with random “head-hopping” because she does it so well. I couldn’t put this down. I loved all the characters, particularly the wonderful Cici. The descriptions were so vivid, I felt I was there in every scene. It was tense, romantic and tear-jerking at the end. Fabulous book!
