The FOURTH sly adventure in the Tubby Dubonnet Series, Tony Dunbar’s witty yet hard-boiled foodie-noir mysteries.“By far the best of a very good collection.” -Book PageTHE SEAMIER SIDE OF THE CRESCENT CITY…“Nothing… will have prepared you for Dunbar’s uniquely laid-back approach to natural disaster… Just enough nefarious plotting to punch up the drolly understated tableaux till you can’t help … drolly understated tableaux till you can’t help laughing, and just enough menace to make you feel you aren’t really missing anything by picking Tubby over the special-effects spectaculars at the local flick.” –Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Slick prose, upbeat characters, and the particular wonders of the French Quarter will commend this to any Skip Langdon or David Robicheaux fan.” –Library Journal
WATER WATER EVERYWHERE…ALSO CRIME
To out-of-town kingpin Willie LaRue, Mardi Gras seems the perfect time for a New Orleans heist – nobody, but nobody will be thinking about a single other thing. Parties, parades, chaos, alcohol – who could be concerned about a little thing like a bank job? Indeed, all might have gone well except for an out-of-season frog-flogger that threatens to flood the French Quarter – something even Hurricane Katrina couldn’t do.
Next thing you know the survivors – thieves and revelers alike – find themselves marooned together. As the LaRue gang plans its watery escape, raffish lawyer Tubby Dubonnet is obliged to take time out from his customary eating and loafing to thwart their murderous intentions. The body count rises as the tempest subsides, and Tubby finds himself fighting not only for his life, but (it seems to him) the very city itself.
A wry, compelling tale of The City That Care Forgot.
“By showing the damage that several days of hard rain could cause to the city’s fragile ecosystem, Dunbar makes the reader really care about its fate. He does the same for Tubby, a lazy, corner-cutting, slightly shabby, occasionally reckless but totally decent man.” –Chicago Tribune

A Mardi Gras tale with tubby Dubonnet, you just know something is going to go wrong. Actually, a lot of things go wrong. Plenty of rain, flooded streets and Tubby attempting to cope. Tony Dunbar’s writing has you feeling like your right there, I wanted to look out the window and see if the rain had stopped then realized it was -28F in Minnesota. …
I could not stop reading this book! Definitely worth the lost sleep. Terrific story, engaging and relatable characters. New Orleans is tangible through detailed descriptions. Already started on the next book in the Tubby DuBonnet series!
Terrific Tubby. I don’t understand the reviews saying there is no ending. There is as much of one as there would be with any book series. There’s enough resolve that should you not wish to continue reading you can and not miss much. But for those who want to keep going, we get to unfold more of the mystery.
I actually am a huge Dubonnet fan, so …
Interesting characters in an interesting story.
I absolutely could not get into this book. Don’t know if it’s the writing style or what but I couldn’t finish it.
Great characters about a storm ravaged New Orleans
Viontage Tony Dunbar. No surprises but a great way to pass the time.
I always like this authors books
Easy and fun to read. Ya gotta love Tubby.
A nice enough mystery that I’ve gone looking for more in this series!
A zany, KeyStone Cop ride through the seamy side of New Orleans—filled with crazy, shallow characters who all have one-track minds to enjoy Mardi Gras despite the flooded out city and cancelled festivities. That is, everyone except for the head honcho bank robber who kidnaps, kills and plunders without social conscience or impulse control. His …
Tubby Dubonet is a great character. I always enjoy this series.
Great in Dunbar tradition.
I like his books.
Couldn’t keep reading, although some would find it interesting. A crazy bank caper in New Orleans during a storm.
Entertaining but since the book is part of a series – the book ends but leaves many situations unresolved.
The characters are right out of Elmore Leonard. Funny one minute and deadly the next. I really enjoyed the local new Orleans flavor .I realize that this is a series but it just seemed there was more to say at the end . that’s the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 . a most entertaining book and i will definitely read more of tubby and …
Always like Tubby Dubonet mysteries. Good, easy reading!
