There’s nothing like a hurricane to bring two souls together! Becca and Ross overcame their initial impressions of each other and in the process discovered something truly special and worth keeping. I really enjoyed the the plot and the realistic challenges of living through a hurricane. The author did a fantastic job of character development in the midst of believable circumstances. I really enjoyed this book and was thrilled with the happy ever after!
The is a Christian story. the main female character is not Christian, but those around her are. There is a bit of Bible verse quoting, but no proselytizing.
The characters are really well done—even the four-legged ones.
The main characters are honorable. They take their responsibilities seriously and risk their own safety to care for the animals left behind during an evacuation.
While they had been at odds before, they work together seamlessly and get to know each other outside of their adversarial positions. Of course, they fall in love.
Shelter From the Storm is a sweet, clean, heartwarming romance. It even has some extraordinary shelter animals! Beccca, shelter director, and Ross who is head of the board, butt heads constantly until the day they, 2 dogs and three cats are trapped on during a hurricane. These characters have real personalities. They must work together to bring themselves and all their charges safely through the storm. Will they find that they complement each other and can that lead to an HEA? I could not put the book down!
Becca and Ross were always at odds when trying to handle the needs of the Port Provident Animal Shelter–he as president of the board and she as the shelter director. Their relationship was so contentious that they both dreaded it when they were thrown together taking care of animals left behind when Hurricane Hope came through their island. Little did they know that God was using their need to find shelter from the storm as a way to bring about a more lasting kind of shelter for both of them. I loved the storyline; it was a very creative twist on the tried-and-true enemies to lovers trope. And I loved the characters; very battle-hardened and in need of God’s softening their hearts to what He was trying to give them. This is my second time to read this book–it’s that kind of good. Highly recommend!
If you’re looking for an inspiring, quick read, this is it! Shelter from the Storm features vulnerable yet strong, believable characters; a captivating, steadily flowing plot; vivid descriptions that put you at the scene and evoke the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of Hurricane Hope and its resulting devastation; and a meaningful faith message that reveals the true meaning of love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more books in the Port Provident: Hurricane Hope series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but am under no obligation to write a positive review.
An amazing story of how two people who don’t get along manage to grow closer during a hurricane and its aftermath. I really enjoyed all the parts about the animals they worked with.
Becca Collins is the director of the Port Provident Animal Shelter. She loves taking are of the pets that are left on her doorstep. Dr. Ross Reeder is an Army veteran and the town veterinarian extraordinaire. Dr. Ross is on the town council and always turning down Becca’s requests for funding for remodeling or relocating. When Hurricane Hope threatens the small Texas town, the residents are forced to evacuate. Some do and some do not, but either way, the pets need help. Becca and Ross are forced to put aside their differences for the good of the town pets. What happens gives Becca new hope. A great book of love, faith, and hope!
Shelter from the Storm by Kristen Etheridge
Finding the only true anchor in the storms of life
I can’t imagine living in a place that has to deal with flooding during hurricanes like this area of Texas does. Author Kristen Etheridge did a great job of helping me picture what it would be like. Shudder! With water covering the first story of buildings and all kinds of things in said water. I’m glad we only have to worry about potential wind damage here where I live!
Both Becca and Ross were passionate about caring for animals. Though they felt like they were always at odds with one another, it was due to their zeal. I felt like the author brought their relationship believably from animosity to attraction as they worked together to help the pets who had been abandoned.
Becca had a terrible childhood that had left her feeling rejected by God. As she saw Ross’ faith and the faith of one of the women of the community, she began to desire what they had. Without being preachy, the author showed the journey toward salvation that Becca took.

I was given a free copy of this item. This gift did not influence my opinion or review.
This is an engaging clean, Christian romance and the start of Ms. Ethridge’s new series titled Port Providence.
The story centers around Becca Collins and Ross Reader. Becca is the director of the town’s animal shelter and Ross is the veterinarian and president of the board of directors of the shelter. These two have locked horns more than once and neither is the other’s favorite person.
But hurricane Hope and a Lab retriever that can’t evacuate with his family, end up bonding Becca and Ross. A friendship and maybe more begins to develop.
When Becca is starting to consider God as well as the importance of hope and love, someone from her past invades her present. Will that force cause Becca to lose her faith and Ross or will she find her HEA?
Kudos to the author for reminding us that the military dogs are as much vets as the humans and also can suffer from PTSD.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Rivetting story
Anyone looking for a clean romance arising between two protagonists facing a major crisis will enjoy this book.
Becca and Ross face incredible odds and Mother Nature to save helpless animals if Port Provident from the wrath of a major hurricane. Watching them confront the demons and doubts of their past, both individual and mutual histories, is compelling reading. Coming through the other side and start to rebuild homes and lives affords a revelation of hope, strength and determination. But those efforts are supported by a community of faith and love, working in accord with the Master Builder, bringing both Becca and Ross into a new relationship with Him, and each other.
Ms.Etheridge deftly navigates the traps of both cliche triteness and overdone emotion, to allow her characters to experience growth into a new level of trust and faith in God. It is not an easy feat, but she handles those moments of “faith talk” in a way that is real, natural, honest and unforced. That kind of an authentic voice is a rare gift in a writer.
And the dogs are so sweet, I wanted to take them both home with me, even though they both have loving ‘forever’ homes. I thought the Idea of Cookie’s tennis ball binkie was so cute, vut also something that probably came from real world situations.
