She’s shy, he’s stoic…not the hardest personality traits to overcome, but Sophie Carson and Roman “Chief” Proudfit have their work cut out for them.Sophie has a crush on the silent-but-studly firefighter next door. She’s been pining away silently while secretly helping the hardworking man by mowing his lawn—which he thinks is being done by her nonexistent husband and/or boyfriend. He’s definitely … definitely not big on neighborly chitchat, but with her stutter, that suits Sophie just fine. But now a misunderstanding at a bar has put him even further out of her reach.
Roman’s difficult upbringing on an Indian reservation is a sore spot, so when he thinks Sophie is taking advantage of poor people for medical trials at her workplace, he lets her know exactly what he thinks. But when he discovers he misunderstood, he’s man enough to admit it…and also that he should have opened his eyes to his beautiful, sensitive neighbor sooner.
As the couple gets closer, each helping the other overcome lifelong pains, for the first time in years, Roman has something to live for other than his job. And, as he discovers when Sophie puts herself in danger, something even bigger to lose…
** Shelter for Sophie is the 8th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Unexpected look at realistically flawed people and their struggle to find the same love and trust we all look for.
Wonderful plot line and character development! Just the right amount of romance to be intriguing.
Very boring, very long useless scenes
Absolutely loved and highly recommend
Me d this book.
Didn’t care for this one.
Really enjoyed Sophie’s story. Liked learning about the culture and history of Chief’s (Roman) backgroud of the Navajo. There’s some danger at the end, but mostly the type of work Sophie does for burn victums and the new techniques she discovers. Chief is a fireman and when he almost loses her, he scares the crap out of him. HEA
I knew I’d like this book because I like this author. What I didn’t expect was how much I loved it! Chief and Sophie actually start dating after a huge misunderstanding. Their story develops with just the right amount of heat and action. Highly recommend!
You get such a great story about Sophie and chief. He has his insecurities and pains from past hurts and she has insecurities about her stutter and injuries. They don’t start off on a great first impression. Haha paying her for her ‘non existent bf’ mowing his lawn while he was away fighting a fire. Then the misunderstanding about how she got people enrolled in her trials at work. But their love was pure and real. Loved how you got Navajo history and beliefs as well. Good book looking forward to Squirrels, Quinn’s and Penelope’s.
I was tickled to have a Native American (Navajo) as the hero in “Shelter for Sophie” (nook). The insights into their culture were wonderful. Plus, the story was very enjoyable.
Loved the characters and the story! Well written book that moved along quickly!
So, there’s been a huge misunderstanding on Chief’s side as to what Sophie does for a living – and it’s a very good thing the story isn’t wrapped around those misunderstanding for a large part of the story, but it’s straighten out quite fast, so that’s a big bonus on my account. So there’s no drama regarding that special thing. Anyway, Sophie and Chief are ment to be together and they seem to know it right from the beginning. It’s almost disgusting how they connect so fast and on so many levels, but that’s what this book and the whole series is all about – finding your soulmate with all the changes in life that are to follow. Great story.
I was intrigued to hear/read this story when I first read the blurb. I was not disappointed. I have been reading the series so I know Coach. I had an impression of a quiet, strong, private man with solid convictions. He is a good match for Sophie.
Erin Mallon did a terrific job bringing the story to life. Especially in portraying Sophie, with her stutter consistently.
What an amazing story. As always Susan Stoker gives us a story that touches your heart. I loved seeing Chief and Sophie’s story be told. Chief’s Native American heritage is brought into the story with interesting effect. Sophie’s speech impediment is very close to home and well told.
Such a unique twist on love at first sight. I love how the cultural aspects played into this store. Sophie has such a sweet and untainted look on life that is refreshing. And Chief is very close behind her in that. Looking forward to the next story.
Chief starts paying attention
One of Chief’s friends recently mentioned that if he didn’t start paying attention, he might miss finding the woman he’s meant to be with
Returning after a very long three day shift, Chief realises that someone has mowed his lawn. He later overheard his neighbour with her stutter at a local bar, where he discovers it was actually her mowing the lawn and that she’s had a crush on him for a while. The next thing he overhears crushes him and he confronts her. However, he finds out he’s wrong and when she approaches him for a favour, he asks her out
I really enjoyed this story with its more spiritual aspects due to Chief’s cultural background and I’m also looking forward to Erin’s story next
Once again Susan Stoker has hit it out of the ball park with this one! I highly recommend this book and all her books for that matter!!!
This is book 8 in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series and this is the first book I am reading in this series. Shelter for Sophie is a standalone so I had not issues following along. This was a great book, normally books starting off with misunderstandings are not always a favorite of mine, but this was resolved very quickly. Sophie and Chief are wonderful characters! Sophie is on the shy side, she has been battling a stutter for years and has impacted her self-esteem, but she also has a spitfire side to her. She is also so kind and care for so many people in all walks of life. Chief is the quiet but very protective alpha. He embraces his Native American heritage and I loved reading about the cultural aspects of some of the ceremonies and beliefs.
Even though their official first meet was not the greatest, Chief was quick to apologize and when he found her to be his other half, he was all in. I do love those possessive, protective, alpha men who will do anything for their woman. Their love story was sweet, hot and beautiful. Looking forward to reading more by Susan Stoker!
I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in a day. A woman is so vulnerable when she doesn’t see herself as perfect. Her stutter didn’t define Sophie, she was a strong and generous woman. Her neighbour, firefighter and Native American was just what she needed. Someone patient and kind and her soul mate. The Native American customs thrown in were interesting and a world away for me but I was fascinated. This was a well rounded and paced story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the stories from the other characters.
I absolutely adored this book! I signed up to receive an ARC based on the blurb attached to the book, not realising it was the 8th book in a series. I feel compelled to review it because I enjoyed it so much that I’ve gone and bought the previous 7 books in the series! Susan Stoker’s writing flows beautifully, and I thoroughly enjoyed her perfectly flawed characters that truly came alive as the story unfolded. In my top 10 books this year (and I read about 5 per week!)
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Sophie Carson appears to be shy around people she doesn’t know. But she has a great group of friends that she can be herself around. And she’s a great advocate for people who don’t seem to have a voice. Roman “Chief” Proudfit shows why it’s not polite to eavesdrop. He’s one of a kind because he’s willing to admit he did wrong.
The author wrote the perfect scene between Roman and Sophie that had me silently clapping and saying “you go girl” – fist pump. What impresses me is that our author isn’t afraid to create characters that are far from perfect. Who wants to read a story where everything is so perfect – gag (cough, cough).
For those that have not read this series before, you’ll want to watch out for Erin and then once you’re done here go find Justice For Erin. Another woman to check out is Beth. By the time I finished her scene was over, I was very curious – but the saying isn’t true here. These ladies show what I love about this series. These stories aren’t connected but you’ll enjoy every book you read of this series. If you want to torture me all you would have to do is ask me to give up one of her series. I couldn’t do it – I would crack under the pressure.
You may find this story very hard to turn away from. There’s just something about Sophie that draws people’s attention – both real and fictional. In a way she’s a tribute to all those women that go above and beyond for people that don’t think that they deserve help. Hmm, what comes to mind is the Day of Service. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Roman but there was just something special about Sophie that I just couldn’t ignore. He also has me thinking about my own heritage. Growing up we were always told that we had some Native Americans in our family tree. He’s a good reason to dig deeper into that.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
