She’s shy, he’s stoic…not the hardest personality traits to overcome, but Sophie Carson and Roman “Chief” Proudfit have their work cut out for them.Sophie has a crush on the silent-but-studly firefighter next door. She’s been pining away silently while secretly helping the hardworking man by mowing his lawn—which he thinks is being done by her nonexistent husband and/or boyfriend. He’s definitely … definitely not big on neighborly chitchat, but with her stutter, that suits Sophie just fine. But now a misunderstanding at a bar has put him even further out of her reach.
Roman’s difficult upbringing on an Indian reservation is a sore spot, so when he thinks Sophie is taking advantage of poor people for medical trials at her workplace, he lets her know exactly what he thinks. But when he discovers he misunderstood, he’s man enough to admit it…and also that he should have opened his eyes to his beautiful, sensitive neighbor sooner.
As the couple gets closer, each helping the other overcome lifelong pains, for the first time in years, Roman has something to live for other than his job. And, as he discovers when Sophie puts herself in danger, something even bigger to lose…
** Shelter for Sophie is the 8th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Good character development as well as developing relationship.
Really engaging story with many different elements of the effects of childhood trauma on adult behavior. Makes me want to research Navajo language and beliefs. Doesn’t get steamy until 65% of the way in, but then it is really good at it and not at all repetitive. Great ending and sequey into the follow on stand alone.
Loved It
Chief is a really great guy, but the first time he talked his neighbor Sophie, he wasn’t pleasant. Sophie thinks Chief is a handsome man but she barely see him. The start off on the wrong foot. But something draws them together.
I am a big fan of this author’s work. I initially thought the bar scene was a bit contrived, but that was because I didn’t read the books in order. Once I read a previous book that explained Chief’s character, I no longer felt this book’s bar scene and subsequent “investigation” were contrived. Most of this author’s books are stand alone, as was this one. But my enjoyment of this one would have been improved had I read them in order. I recommend this book, and especially recommend reading it AFTER reading Dean’s story.
The book is really good….easy to read with a good plot and characters.
Probably my least favorite of all of this authors books. Didn’t like either character. I’m used to this authors men being very alpha and there’s always insta love but this was ridiculous. Literally one minute Roman is ripping Sophie a new one and the next they are soul mates.
I love Susan Stoker’s books!
Sophie has a crush on Roman, the silent-but-studly firefighter next door. She is shy, stutters, and has been silently pining away for him. She has been secretly mowing his lawn, and he thinks it is being done by nonexistent her boyfriend. Roman’s difficult upbringing on an Indian reservation is a sore spot. When he thinks Sophie is taking advantage of poor people for medical trials at her workplace, he lets her know what he thinks. Roman learns he misunderstood and apologizes to Sophie. He realizes he should have opened his eyes to his beautiful and sensitive neighbor sooner. As they get closer, Roman has something to live for other than his job. Sophie puts herself in danger, and Roman discovers he has something even bigger to lose. – I read the first nine chapters, and that was enough for me. I liked Sophie’s character. She was strong, sweet, and fought for others. I was not a fan of Roman’s. Sophie mowed his yard, and he gave her $20 for her “boyfriend” without even paying any attention to her. Then he overhears her talking in a restaurant and realizes she has a crush on him. He decides to take an interest then but misunderstands a conversation about a medical trial. I liked that he stood up for what he believes, but I did not like the way he handled it. I didn’t feel chemistry from him with her. It was like he decided he was going to like her, so he did. I may have missed the best part of the book, but this was a big disappointment.
I read every book this author writes. Shes grabs you in all the way to the end. Once you start reading, you don’t want to stop.
Not the most exciting book I ever read and sometimes unrealistic.
I loved the originality of this story. The Native American additions were well done and added to the story as a whole. Good job!
I fell in love with Chief and Sophie! Sophie has had to overcome her stutter and an experience with an abusive stepfather. She still stutters a little which just makes her more human. She has a heart of gold with no prejudice. Chief had started to forget his roots and their first actual meeting was unpleasant. Soon he realises he had judged her incorrectly and falls like a ton of bricks.
I enjoyed getting an incite into Navajo culture.
This story was hard to put down. Wonderful characters and a sweet HEA.
I liked learning about the Navajo culture throughout the story
I read all of Susan Stoker’s books – can’t wait for the next one.
This is part of a series. I have liked the whole series
A very easy read that turns out happily ever after.
A good story with good characters. A little slow, but I had to know what happened.
I recommend this book totally ! Sophie is a special kind of young lady with a giving heart. A wonderful summer read ! But read all the books that are leading up to Sophie !
Love her stories
I love Susan Stoker and she did not disappoint. This was a great book, wonderful characters, some suspense and definitely romance!
