Elizabeth Parkins lived through a nightmare come true—getting kidnapped by a serial killer. Seeking a fresh start, she moves to Texas, but escaping her demons proves impossible when she’s too terrified to leave her own apartment. A small, accidental fire sparks a coping method she’d never expected, and brings an amazing man to her door.
Firefighter Cade “Sledge” Turner’s idyllic life ended the … ended the day his sister was kidnapped. Now he knows firsthand that tragedy can befall anyone, at any time. Meeting Elizabeth on the job was a gift. Cade can envision spending his life with this woman. He understands what she’s been through, is willing to help her heal…though even Cade is unaware of Beth’s new secret obsession.
As Beth takes steps to help herself heal, and Cade attempts to earn her trust and prove his own, they’re both about to be tested—in a way that could see everything they’ve worked for go up in flames.
* Shelter for Elizabeth is the 5th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

This is the 5th book in Susan Stoker’s Texas heroes series. I’ve loved getting to know each character and their love interests in each book. Here, we get to meet firefight Cade “Sledge” Turner and Elizabeth Parkins, one of the serial killer’s survivors from a previous book in Ms. Stoker’s SEAL of protection series. The crossover is great, and you get to catch up on those people, as well as getting the complete story and pasts of those in this book.
It can be a bit confusing at times with the intertwined storylines and different characters, but just look at it as filler; the main story revolves around two great people, each with interesting personalities and formidable backstories that leaves you wondering how they get out of bed each day! Plenty of action, lots of great dialogue with laugh out loud moments, and stories that break your heart then reaffirm your faith in humanity! Cade and Beth deserve their fought – after HEA! Here’s to them getting it!
I love this entire series and the personal obstacles that people overcome and lovers don’t see as a problem.
Very enjoyable! Loved getting to know Cade and Elizabeth! Her issue was different from other and I liked her ups and downs. I barely remember her from Summer’s book so that might make it a reread. It was fun getting to see Penelope and meet more of the station 7 crew. I listened on audio and the narrator did a great job!
So SS never writes a typically easy read, there is usually a difficult underlying message, terrifying circumstances the characters find themselves in or some other scenario that causes the heart to stutter.
After Summers story Beth was always someone that stuck in the hearts of the invested reader of SS books, so her getting a HEA is a fantastic conclusion of an unsatisfying open thread.
However, this was always going to be the toughest read, given what we know (if you read Summer’s story – Protecting Summer) happened to Beth.
The state we find her in is entirely understandable given all this, but unexpectedly she has also found such a strong support in Penelope (Cade’s sister) and their friendship is total #squadgoals.
Cade is a revelation and so in touch emotionally with himself and what he needs in a partner, though his reaction to Beths secret (which in itself was such a difficult thing to read about, and in a lot of ways makes for uncomfortable reading) was disappointing, but his actions after that were very redeeming too.
A tough read in so many ways but very worth it too. By the time you get to the end you will be so invested in this HEA, you will almost cry in relief.
Elizabeth Parkins may have survived being kidnapped and tortured but she was still a prisoner of her ordeal. Cade Turner knows when he first sees her that she’s the one for him. He’s willing to do everything in his power to help her overcome all of her issues. Beth longs to be just “normal” and having a man like Cade love her is something she never thought she’d experience. Her attempts at self healing take a wrong turn but end up putting her on the right path.
“Shelter for Elizabeth” is book five in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series. It is the story of Elizabeth “Beth” Parkins and Cade “Sledge” Turner. Beth lived through a nightmare being kidnapped by a serial killer, she made it out alive but not without some issues. Cade meets Beth when there is a small fire at her apartment complex, and is instantly drawn to her. Penelope who happens to be Cades brother is also best friends with Beth, she helps her cope with everyday life of not being able to leave her apartment. This book is loaded with suspense, romance, passion, emotion, and love.
If you want to read the backstory of Beth’s kidnapping read “Protecting Summer” book 4 in the SEAL of Protection series, you won’t regret it.
Beth has an illness that keeps her inside her home she can’t go out unless she is with someone he is a firefighter he wants to help and protect her she ends up going away to get therapy to help her conquer her illness she gets medicine meanwhile he is on a quest to find her they fall in love have sizzling romance and she continues to help find people with her computer a happy ending
Okay, this just went up to one of my Susan Stoker favorites. Beth, Elizabeth, was introduced in Summer & Mozart’s story in the SEALs of Protection series. This story connects to the SEALs, Delta Team 1 & of course, Badge of Honor series.
It is so good to know what happened to Beth. Her strength and inner beauty as well as computer genius is inspiring.
Loving this time at home to catch on some reading.
Cade and Beth are a great couple, he’s patient and caring and she’s trying to find herself…or her new self. Recovering from a traumatic experience has changed her life. Their journey together is inspiring, I hope you love it as much as me.

Overall a good book. Romantic, but dealing with real world issues. The endearment, sweetheart was overused and has normally true with romance novels unreal situations occurred.
All of Susan Stoker romantic suspense novels are winners with very realistic a believable characters, strong storylines with a hot romance. I’ve never been disappointed with anything she’s written that I’ve been fortunate enough to have read. They are thrilling, edgy and suspenseful enough to keep you glued to you Kindle!
While I’ve read many books by this author, this particular one wasn’t my cup of tea. Suffering from agoraphobia is difficult to live with and hard for those that love and want to help you. I’m sorry and while the writing was good, it wasn’t up to par with the story-line and characters. I appreciate the hero being patient to a fault but then there were pages and pages of sexual activity with a gal who can’t leave her apartment without someone to take care of her. I didn’t finish the story due to my impatience.
I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and unique perspective on agoraphobia. Very well written!
Elizabeth finds her Shelter in Cade
Beth has been struggling with her agoraphobia, fear of venturing outside her home, when a fire breaks out in her frying pan. Cade and his fellow firefighters come to the rescue. When Penelope, Cade’s sister, runs in he realises this was the friend Pen always spoke to him about.
Challenges and obstacles galore for this couple, but with support, love and concerned friends and family they finally manage to work them out Really enjoyed this story after reading Protecting Summer initially and hoping that Beth would find her HEA Look forward to reading Hayden’s story next…
It was nice to follow up on a minor character from a former book in the series. I was impressed by the way Susan took an impossible situation and showed how a person might realistically deal with trauma. I enjoy her use of strong yet flawed characters and the way they support one another through crisis situations.
Again the language is very gritty and the love scenes are not appropriate for young readers.
I was happy to see that someone wrote about the debilitating problem Agoraphobia. I was very close to becoming housebound myself but luckily sought help. I was sad to see the author have her begin to light fires as a means of control when she needed to learn that she and she alone was in control of her feelings and her life. She could make the choices rather than external forces. Again, though I’m glad someone wrote about the issue.
AWESOME, LOOKING INTO THE SERIES AS WE SPEAK! FINISHED BOOK & IMMEDIATELY WENT TO SHOP !
Cade is a firefighter who loves his job and his sister Caroline who is a firefighter also. Beth was kidnapped and tortured leaving her scarred and afraid to leave her apartment. Caroline was grabbed by iSIS tortured and then rescued. Both Caroline and Beth are in the same therapy group howbeit Beth is remotely. Caroline comes and takes Beth’s hand never letting go or Beth has a panic attack, and takes Beth grocery shopping. Beth has agoraphobia from her kidnapping by the serial killer and is terrified of being kidnapped again. Beth is cooking in her apartment and an oil fire starts, her kitchen is in flames she calls 911 they tell her to leave her apartment until help arrives …Beth only backs out of kitchen and stands frozen until firefighters break in and put out the fire. This is where she meets Cade “Sledge” Parker when he recognizes her fear and who calms Elizabeth down. Cade asks her if she would allow the medics to come in and check her out? When everything is wrapped up and the all clear Cade asks Beth if she wants help in cleaning up her kitchen. This is the The VERY BASIC BEGINNING. I absolutely loved this….Suspenseful Romantic Mystery Thriller you just can’t put down….I was given this and I voluntarily leave this review.
Definite recommendation. Couldn’t wait to see what will happen with character
