It’s February along the shores of Northern Lake Michigan. A heavy blanket of snow has been building up in the woods since early November and the inland lakes have had a solid covering of ice since December. Shelf ice, stacked ten or fifteen feet in places, has been building on Lake Michigan for weeks.
Sheriff Ray Elkins, responding to a late-night home invasion call, discovers the brutal murder … brutal murder of a local artist at her home deep in the woods. Elkins works to understand complex lives and relationships as he pursues a brilliant and brutal adversary.

I really like this series of books. They are not so far-fetched as to be unbelievable. Very entertaining reading.
I like this series, the descriptions of the characters & nature come to life. Since I live in Florida the rugged, icy beauty is intriguing. The killer is always a surprise!
Gotta’ love a sheriff who is a foodie!
With every Ray Elkins book, I find myself wishing he was a real life friend. Alas, I shall have to settle for his company only in the form of words on a page. Each book has been an improvement in style. I love the locale. The stories are fresh. I felt this was one of the best in the series even though it foreshadows his departure.
Great read!
Ends too abruptly.
A good mystery. Part of a series and I’ve read 2 or 3 of them. Nice characters, strong women. My only suggestion would be for the author to let you know more about the continuing characters; let you into their heads a bit more.
Like all of the books I’ve read in Aaron Stander’s Ray Elkins series, I enjoyed Ice Shelf very much. The characters and their relationships with each other are complex enough to get the job done, but not blatantly so. The plot, like the setting in the Upper Michigan peninsula, offers just the right combination of of surprises to keep readers on …
This was well written and I enjoyed the read. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a challenge in figuring out the next step.
This was a very good book I liked the action and the suspense . Also that you couldn’t find out who was killing all those people until the very end. Also the things he and the Dr . did together and how she would just drop in unanounced to get him to kyacking and other things. I liked how he took his dispatcher out for a date and how it finally …
Loved the story, the author made you feel like you were looking over the sheriff’s shoulder.
Page turner hard to put down.
I liked this book a lot, moved quickly, likeable characters, and couldn’t wait to see who done it ans if they got caught!
Kept me reading and guessing who the killer was
I ENJOYED THIS ENTIRE SERIES..
Holds interest
It was ok until the end and I couldn’t figure out the conclusion. It didn’t seem to have an ending.
Kept my interest. Interesting characters
I couldn’t put my reader down. Well written. Like that author a lot.
I just love Sheriff Ray Elkins, and his other characters in each novel. The books make me want to jump in the car and drive to Michigan. It offers a view of one part of our country and the people who live there. I love the way Sheriff Ray solves the crimes. I have read all the books and can’t wait for the next episode.
