It’s February along the shores of Northern Lake Michigan. A heavy blanket of snow has been building up in the woods since early November and the inland lakes have had a solid covering of ice since December. Shelf ice, stacked ten or fifteen feet in places, has been building on Lake Michigan for weeks.
Sheriff Ray Elkins, responding to a late-night home invasion call, discovers the brutal murder … brutal murder of a local artist at her home deep in the woods. Elkins works to understand complex lives and relationships as he pursues a brilliant and brutal adversary.

If you’re from Michigan, you’ll like this series. Especially if you’ve spent time in the UP.
This is a great story that kept me guessing. The only thing that irritated me was the story takes place in Michigan, but the characters don’t sound like they live here.
This story plods and doesn’t hold interest
good read for mystery lovers
This series is set in Michigan, my home state, and although I no longer live there, I enjoy all the references I recognize. The lead character is an everyday guy doing a difficult and challenging job to the best of his ability.
Enjoyable
I love all this authors books. I want to read more of his.
The mystery is engaging enough to keep the reader reading to solve the mystery.
Enjoy all of his books.
Good read
Being from Michigan this made this book a great read.
Great summer read at the cottage
Complicated tale of relationships, murder, and fighting the elements of a Michigan lake winter.
Enjoyed reading it. There were enough twists in the plot to keep one interested. Being a Michigander, it was realistic
I read all the Aaron Stander books I can find. They are a great read.
Not a fan. Tried a couple of these but didn’t find them all that interesting.
Will read more by this author. Enjoyable character interaction. Believable plot. More action than thinking.
I really like the Ray Elkins series!
A very good book, related to the book because I was born and raised in Michigan, now living in Utah.
Was a real page turner for me. I lived in Mi. once so the setting was familiar. I have read several books by this author and enjoyed all of them.
