It’s February along the shores of Northern Lake Michigan. A heavy blanket of snow has been building up in the woods since early November and the inland lakes have had a solid covering of ice since December. Shelf ice, stacked ten or fifteen feet in places, has been building on Lake Michigan for weeks.
Sheriff Ray Elkins, responding to a late-night home invasion call, discovers the brutal murder … brutal murder of a local artist at her home deep in the woods. Elkins works to understand complex lives and relationships as he pursues a brilliant and brutal adversary.

A well written crime series that will also delight fans of kayaking.
I really enjoy the Roy Elkins stories
Had to read the complete series loved it
Winter in Northern Michigan has it’s challenges, but add trying to solve a murder or two? This started off with a bang (or maybe crash is a better word) and just kept going. I learned a lot about kayaking in the winter, and skiing vs snowshoeing. There were a lot of elements that seemed not to fit together at first but worked their way out by …
Love the whole series
I live in Michigan and it’s nice that the author actually describes the area like it is. Good story with believable characters.
Never a dull moment. Great read.
I was really “enjoying the ride” but it ended too soon. If not for what felt like a too quick summation, I’d give it the 5th star.
Was an ok quick read. Very abrupt ending almost like the author was in a hurry to finish the book.
Good story well written. Characters you can like. Story line complicated enough to keep you guessing. Kept me engaged.
This is a book that will not be soon forgotten. The plot is original, the characters well-defined, and the story quickly draws you in. The conclusion is a surprise as this plot twists and turns.
Enjoyed reading about the exploration
Left far too many ends dangling
It was different and I really enjoyed it
Good reading highly recommend if you like murder mystery books.
It was fairly disturbing.
Set in the upper mid-west, this crime novel had many twists and turns, which often led the reader down a “Blind alley”. You never knew who the villain ( there may have been more than one) was until the very end. A great read!
Another great addition to the Ray Elkins series. I discovered this author and series by accident on bookbub and am now trying to read all this series. The editing is superb and the characters are well developed. Highly recommend this book and this series.
I really enjoyed this novel. My likes in reading bounce between romances and mysteries. This novel had a very good story line.
Like the setting, the characters and the plot. Will read more in this series.
