Unloved ” was so loved by me. This story was so different and intriguing with a hell of a twist that blew me away. A love story deserving of 5 stars!
Having read the blurb for Unloved, I was a little scared to read the book itself. The despair evident within just those few lines broke my heart. It also haunted me and kept pulling me back, so I took a chance. Like me, Unloved is Katy Regnery stepping out of her comfort zone and getting surprising results. Cassidy takes readers on an introspective journey that is tragic, inspirational and courageously heartbreaking. Brynn is Cassidy’s chance at redemption, if he steps out of his father’s shadow, maybe he can save himself. Not only did I lose my breath, I left my heart behind as well.
Shear Haven is a heartfelt, modern-day fairytale retelling of Rapunzel. While it’s a short story, it’s not short on the feels. Bella and Nico have a wonderful connection and their sweet romance will sweep you away. This story is sure to leave a smile on your face.
Loved this!
This Rapunzel retelling done Katy Regnery style was short and sweet and charming. Just what I wanted and needed.
Bella and Nico’s chemistry was instant and it was strong. The week they spent together was romantic and full of swoony feels.
Even though it’s a quick read, it’s full of heartwarming goodness that left me smiling big and believing in fairytales.
I really love reading Katy’s stories. However, I was reminded why I mostly avoid Novellas! Novellas are too quick and I always feel like I have missed out on so much. That being said…
Sweet, kind Bella is really put upon by the nasty godmother. Bella works day in and day out at her godmother’s hair salon, and then goes home to clean and cook. Bella is cleaning up the salon after closing when Nico comes knocking on the door, desperate for help for his sister. Bella agrees to help out, having no idea that she is really helping out a real prince and princess. Nico pursues, Bella tries to keep away but fails, and love blossoms and grows.
This is a really sweet short story. So much I wish was here – what happens to the nasty godmother? Does she get hers? Is there a surprise inheritance that saves the prince? A vineyard still in Bella’s name? Something? Left a little unsatisfied, but all in all a sweet little read.
I adore fairytales and this reworking of Rapunzel into modern day is just perfect. I loved all the connections between this story and the fairytale. It is definitely my new favorite fairytale retelling.
“But how does a simple girl from a small town spend a week with a prince and say farewell with her wits and will intact?”
Bella doesn’t need the prince to rescue her from her tower and jailer. She finds her own strength when the going gets tough.
“But I’m greedy,” he murmured. “I won’t give you up.”
“Let’s not ask for eternity,” she said softly, “when we have now.”
The story was sweet and romantic, so easy to read that I devoured it in one afternoon. A story that fit nicely into a novella and never felt rushed or cut short.
“She was so guileless, so sincere and straightforward, he wished he could see the world through her brown eyes instead of his own far-more-jaded blue.”
It was not my favorite of the Modern Fairytales, but it was enjoyable.
I am a huge – HUGE fan of Katy Regnery’s modern fairytales. A couple of them go down as some of my favorite books of all time. So I was beyond excited to get an early copy of Shear Heaven, a re-telling of the Rapunzel fairytale and, you guys? This might be the most fairytale-iest of all the fairytales.
It’s a novella, so it’s an easy, fast-paced read which also means that things move very quickly. This is something I sometimes struggle with in novellas and there were some moments early on where I had some trouble keeping up with the rapidly developing feelings between Nico and Bella. But the whole premise is so earnestly sweet and breathtakingly romantic that it ultimately didn’t take my heart long to jump on board. Nico and Bella were literally the ultimate fairytale – sweet, swoony, and desperately in love, and there went my heart, right along for the ride.
There are no lemons in this incredible series. Shear Heaven can be read in one sitting, and frankly that’s probably how you’ll read it – whether you plan it that way or not – because Ms. Regnery’s words are as captivating and enchanting as ever and this was another effortless hit for me! ~ 4.5 Stars
Katy Regnery has been one of my favorite authors ever since I read THE VIXEN AND THE VET, back in 2014. I have read many more of her books over the years since, but her new book, UNLOVED, has to be the very best book she has ever written. In my humble opinion it is a gem. It is at the top of my list of THE BEST READS OF 2017.
From the very first page in the Prologue I was drawn into the story. Brynn Cadogen had lost the love of her life, when her fiance was shot to death in a mass shooting. “I had someone in the crowd that night who had a name (Jeremiah Benton or just Jem) who I dearly loved. Those of us that survived are the walking wounded, or the walking dead.” Brynn has lived the live of a recluse with her four year old Siamese cat Milo, since that tragic night two years ago. Before the Steeple 10 shooting she had lived a full and rich life. She was a Website Designer, but it was this job that made it too easy to separate herself from the world. A hermit!
It is a forgotten cell phone that brings Brynn back to life. It leads her to a trip to Mount Katahdin. The highest peak in Maine and named by Native Americans with the meaning “The Greatest Mountain.” It is here Brynn has come to find a way to say goodbye. For the first time since Jem died she has direction. A purpose. Jem once told her, “My soul belongs to Katahdin… Well, it did anyway, before I gave it to you.”
Cassidy (Cass) Porter lived a very isolated, reclusive life in a rustic cabin in the woods, way off the grid, in Northeast Piscataquis, in the shadow of Katahdin. He has lived there with his mama and Grandfather Cleary since he was 9 years old. They had moved there after his father had been arrested and convicted for the brutal murder of twelve innocent girls. His father died in prison shortly after. His mother passed away from cancer and his grandfather had passed on, too. It was a quiet and isolated life for Cass. But he promised himself, his mom and grandfather to live a quiet life and always remember who his father had been. He dreaded any interaction with society.
He hadn’t wanted to be a hero, but when Brynn was attacked on the Mountain it was Cass alone who was the only thing between her and death. I just love those self-tortured heroes, whether they are recluses, scarred, broken or homeless. Then comes the heroine who “try” to save them, and all the angst that goes with it. Katy always writes well written books, but she out does herself this time. She guarantees a HEA, but there are lots of twist and turns plus surprises in this book. Highly recommend and would give more then 5* if I could.
Great Love story with a very unique theme. You find two people who come together under unusual circumstances and face the most difficult challenge of falling deeply in love yet finding that love being overshadowed by sins of the past. I highly recommend this book.
Oh Wow!! I am in awe over this book. This epic story was nothing like I expected it to be. Katy Regnery is a new to me author and she just TOTALLY blew me away with Unloved. My favorite read of the year!!!
My heart broke for both Brynn and Cassidy from the very start, but in different ways. Their story is so real and Katy’s writing is so freaking good that you feel all the feels with this story. I couldn’t figure out how that this story was going to go or how it was going to end until that jaw dropping moment.
It’s so hard to write a review for Unloved without wanting to giveaway too much. Brynn and Cassidy’s love story is a very unforgettable love story. One that is guaranteed to stick with you for a long time.
Happy Reading Everyone!!
THIS book!!! OMG. This is my first Katy Regnery read and I know it will not be my last. The blurb had me intrigued but the actual story… it blew me away. Just when you think these characters will get a HEA, Katy knocks you down a peg or two with a twist, time after time.
You will fall in love with both characters even though Cassidy is the son of Paul Isaac Porter who was convicted of murdering 12 girls. Brynn has been a hermit for 2 years after losing the love of her life. She’s making one last hike to try and let go of the past and move on. Cassidy lives in complete solitary. He’s been alone the last 10 years of his life trying to make up for the sins of his father. He doesn’t believe he is worthy of love because of those sins.
This book is not only heart breaking but full of love and hope. Can Brynn make Cassidy believe he is worthy of her love? Or is Cassidy forever meant to be alone?
Five heart-rending stars My eyes are swollen from the tears I shed. My throat aches from the lump that kept forming as I read Unloved. My heart is both heavy and light. I knew it was going to be angsty. I was prepared, but I still felt so emotional.
Every now and then you need a book that will break your heart and piece it back together again. Unloved does that. Katy did that to me. Again. I fell in love with her writing with The Vixen and the Vet. Unloved only strengthened it. With a deft touch, she laid out the love story of Brynn and Cassidy. It was a love that was meant to be. It wasn’t insta-love, they didn’t even kiss until almost 60% of the book. It was a gradual attraction that built into something deeper and true as time went on. It was sweet and pure and oh so sexy.
The way Katy wrote it in alternating first-person POV suited Unloved to perfection. Any other way wouldn’t have worked as well.
Cassidy and Brynn are great characters. They feel like real people. I couldn’t help but root for them to be together. After all they went through, they deserve their happy-ever-after.
I read it straight for three hours. I couldn’t put it down. That’s always an indication that the book is engrossing and I am loving it. Yes, Unloved is loved, by me.
Joan Jett once said, “Life is both strong and fragile.” There truly is a delicate and essential balance that needs to exist to maintain the even flow of it all. This is the prevailing thought I had as I read, Unloved. My second thought was that Katy Regnery, like Joan Jett is fierce with her words and voice.
The strength and fragility balance is one that Katy Regnery creates and maintains in her writing. Her word choice and the way in which she structures her sentences to tell this story is such a beautiful and powerful force. I was riveted to each word. I hung on to each one as the plot exploded and slowly reformed into one incredible and moving story.
The delicate yet strong personalities of Cass and Brynn also reflected the essential balance of life. These two very broken individuals had the strength to endure the tragedies which devastated their individual lives. They were both so emotionally fragile yet they found the courage to love and to allow this love to be a force for healing in their lives.
I was lost in Cass and Brynn’s world. I was a active participant in their daily interactions with each other. I was a captive in the ever tightening bonds of their intensely passionate emotional journey. I struggled with them as they fought to do what was right and necessary.
Unloved was an unexpected and emotionally moving read for me. It was a world of paradoxes and an expedition into uncharted territory. I reveled in the creativity of Katy Regnery’s plot twists. I cherished the emotional experiences that drove Cass and Brynn to be both vulnerable and strong enough to trust the true guiding force of life – love.
Amazing. Darker. Hopeful. Gritty.
And the one set of words I rarely say – I never saw that coming.
Katy Regnery once again delivers the best in reading contemporary romance, and does so brilliantly with this unexpected tale. First, do not be wary of the title. You’ll get a HEA that you know the characters will deserve as Ms Regnery never lets her readers down. But getting there?
Mind.Blown
I feel that I am a rarity amongst the readership where I want – no – I demand that there is equal strength in the main characters. I felt I understood the whys of where Brynn and Cass are when their paths cross due to the perfect depth in the delivery of the back story.
Brynn. She is the ideal in a heroine I look for. Soft and vulnerable when needed, but delivers a strength that moves the story to an amazing conclusion. She’s the friend you count on. The person you wish the best of everything. The woman you admire for her quiet tenacity and perseverance.
The reader knows: She feels unloved.
Cass. He is the troubled hero. The one you want to fix and make things better. Yet, you comprehend that with circumstance and time, why this man is this man. He is the gentle giant who will give the shirt off his back. The person you wish the best of everything but understand why not possible. The man you admire for his strength of belief and devotion.
The reader knows: He believes he should be unloved.
What happens when two people who have the best reasons for being unloved find each other in unusual circumstances? You have this story. When I say that Ms Regnery writing is magical, I am not talking about a separation from reality. I want to be entertained, but I don’t handle when the writing veers and tries too hard. This story – wow – it kept me compelled to continue until wee hours of the night because I was equal vested in their outcome. The reading was paced where the pages flowed flawlessly. I finished the story feeling fulfilled as I always do with Katy’s writing. And yet, this was different and intriguing to have me still thinking about it days after finishing.
If you are a fan of Katy Regnery’s Blueberry Lane/Heart of Montana series, this is a departure from those happy and delightful stories. But I implore you to read it because she delivers something equally if not better in this story. If you are a fan of Ms Regnery’s fairytales, I know you will be enamored for this tale to join their ranks. Not a fan? You soon will be. This is a 5 star read for me and yet feels like those are not enough to express how much I loved this story.
