Let me start out by saying I was warned by the author that this book was dark, very dark. I like dark romance. I like twisty, psychotic thrillers. This book goes beyond that. IF YOU HAVE PTSD OR I TRIGGERS, PLEASE CHECK OUT THE SPOILERS I WILL NOTE AT THE END OF THIS REVIEW!I
The first book is She and is told in Joey’s POV. Joey, who is from a dysfunctional family, is in college when he sees Natalie and knows the minute he meets her that she is special. He has one day with her but she blows him off and we don’t find out until much later why. He gets another chance and this time she gives in to her feelings for him. This book does have a deep love story interwoven amount the chaos that is Joey and Natalie’s life. Fractured, tormented by demons, confused, and addicted don’t begin to describe Natalie but we still feel for her and Joey sees beyond that to what she could be. He wants them to be not just “good enough for now” but ” good enough for forever. ” But fate has different things in store for them. This first part ends in a shocking cliffhanger. Luckily you have the next book right here.
The 2nd book is He and it is told in both Natalie and Joey’s POV so we get more insight into Natalie’s life prior to meeting Joey and all about her demons. This book lets loose and will take everything you thought you knew from the first book and shake it up and put it in another dimension! What you thought is gone and the reality is unimaginable! I had trouble getting thru this book and I actually had to skim over some parts they were just too difficult to read. This is mankind at his worst. But I was vested in this book and I wanted to find out what happened to this couple. And through all the twists, turns, shocks and horrors, they do come out, scathed but together.
The writing was superb and although I found the darkness a bit too horrifying, it was definitely a 5 STAR book!
SPOILERS: INCEST, CHILD PORN, PORN, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, RAPE, GANG RAPE
She:
After reading this book I’m at a loss as to what to write.
The book was very very good.
Remarkable storyline and plot.
But it has me all over the place.
My feelings and emotions are coursing through me.
I want to quiet myself but I feel the need to scream.
I want to go lay on the couch and cry but there’s so much energy coursing through me I can’t even sit still.
Joe and Natalie are something very unique for me.
I love them one minute then I’m absolutely seething at them the next!
I want to hug each of them then I want to slap them upside their heads!
They are endearing yet infuriating!
She is a dark themed book. That’s filled with twists and turns at every corner that had my heart pounding and holding my breath.
Secrets that have been dormant and turned a blind eye to are coming to life and into the light.
I went into this book not knowing anything about it except that it’s written by Ms. Samuels and that was more than enough for me.
She is truly a talented author that has her own writing style and originality.
I love how the book starts in a steady pace and begins to pickup and keeps climbing and finally reaching a crescendo!
After reading this dark compelling thrilling intense story I’m left speechless, stunned and off balance with what’s going on inside my head and my heart.
That means,to me, that the author wrote one incredible unforgettable book!
Am I waiting for He,hell yeah I am!
He:
This is the rest of Natalie and Joe’s story. The first book She is a must read before this one.
I absolutely loved this book!
Natalie,my poor Natalie I love you!
For your strength, for her brains, for not letting ANY ONE break you!
For still being able to love and trust. For being able to give when everyone around only ever took.
Joe was also a strong young man. He’s love and loyalty to Natalie was something to behold.
With all he saw and went through his love never wavered.
He would burn down the world around him for his Natalie.
Their lovestory isn’t typical,it isn’t dates and bright smiles.
It isn’t sunshine and rainbows.
It’s filled with darkness, evil, wickness and a network of perverted depraved people.
I loved their story. I loved their determination. I loved that they never gave up even knowing that the consequences would be dire.
The writing is perfect for this story.
The words are impactful and no beating around the bush.
The story and plot are dark, chilling and scary.
It’s intense from beginning to end.
It sent chills up and down my body numerous times.
It kept my heart beating so fast,I thought it would either explode or stop throughout the book.
It’s the darkest book I’ve read to date.
I was riveted and stunned with how evil and wicked people can be.
This duet especially He is not for the faint of heart.
This book deals with things that happen in and do happen real life, the author doesn’t sugarcoat anything. It’s told with all the ugliness and truthfulness because that’s the way this vile subject needs to be told. The way it’s presented is needed to have the maximum effect and impact.
*Please don’t get this book then give it a low rating because “it’s too dark” that’s not fair to the author nor to the book.
I’m not one, when writing a review, who talks about the plot of the book. In my mind, you should read the blurb for that. What I want to convey in this review is the depth of emotion, light and dark, that Kailee Reese Samuels is able to evoke from her readers. Never one to shy away from delicate subjects, this author can take us on a journey filled with angst and joy, fear and redemption, and she can package all of this up in a wonderful and thoughtful story.
If you are one who has triggers caused by dark material, this book is not for you. But, if you’re like me, and I do love to explore all aspects of the human experience (even if only from a purely spectator position as a reader), you will get a great deal out of reading Kailee Reese Samuels. You’ll fly high and experience a character’s happiness but you’ll also fall down the rabbit hole and see the darker aspects of life. If you want to step outside of your ordinary world and take a walk through both the bright light and the utter darkness that comprises humanity, then this is a book for you. This is Kailee’s insightful imagination filtering through her words.
I would definitely give this Duet a million stars if I could. A dark, twisted, emotional rollercoaster that had me rapidly turning pages, shedding tears and needing more as usual with any KRS novel a must read
Each book reviewed under its own title.
This Duet is by far the best books the author has written to date. A heart wrenching story about a girl with a horrible past that keeps taking over her present. Kailee has done an outstanding job with this Duet, she takes you places most authors wouldn’t dare. Hang on tight! This wild ride can make you cry as much as it makes you laugh.
She:
This book is a fantastic read by an amazing author. Kailee Reese Samuels has a unique writing style that truly captivates me and always leaves me wanting more. Natalie and Joe are interesting characters and their story took me on an emotional ride with twists and turns that pulled me in. Great story, well developed characters and what a cliff hanger!
He:
Kailee Reese Samuels has written another fantastic book! You definitely need to read She, the first book of the duet to understand what’s going on but this duet is a definite must read. I love how much Joe loves Natalie and never gives up on her. These two go on quite an emotional, dark twisted ride on their journey of love and what an ending.
This duet was amazing. Dark subject matter so please heed the warnings. Joe is a spoiled rich frat boy. Natalie is a beautiful girl who has been delt a crap life beyond anything most people would ever think of. Kailee has told an incredible story with Joe & Natalie. I truly don’t know how she does it. If you love the dark you need to read this one.
Wow I was blown away with this story. This story isn’t for the fainted heart people as it has many dark twisted parts that may cause triggers. I so love the extra thought that has to go in to reading this book because you may have to stop to process what you have read to put it together. I love the mysterious ways this book is written as it will have you feeling the love hate through out this book will the love that can be over powerful enough to get you through your darkest times
She
Omigosh!! I’m speechless!!
Kailee Reese Samuels has a unique style of writing that will absolutely blow your mind! She will play with your emotions. Ripping out your heart and soul only to mend it and rip it out again. Unexpected twists and turns that will blindside you! Dark and twisted. Even some poetic words that will melt your heart. I believe that She is her best writing since Juliet and Son of Saint. Natalie is a fragmented and broken soul. Abused in ways that are unimaginable since childhood.
Joey has had his life mapped out since childhood. He has had his heart ripped out by Natalie but his unconditional love is the glue that binds them together.
Secrets are exposed and lies are revealed. Death and evil is always lurking on Joey’s doorstep.
If you love dark and twisted, then you will love She. There are some triggers. This is a duet so naturally there is a cliffhanger.
I highly recommend anything written by this author.
He
Absolutely speechless!! Kailee Samuels spins an intricate web of lies and deceit that is dark, twisted, intense and wicked.
You will be captivated from the first page and sent on a wild ride of every emotion possible. I would suggest reading the first part of this Duet, She, first.
Natalie is a strong woman that has been abused mentally, physically and sexually since the day she was born.
Joe is Natalie’s savior. He is so protective over her that he would destroy anything or anyone who would try to cause her harm. His unconditional love helps bring her from darkness to light. Will Natalie and Joe’s relationship finally be destroyed after lies are exposed and secrets are revealed? I would strongly recommend this duet, She / He!
She…. A girl so lost she may never be able to be saved. He sees the beauty still inside. Natalie and Joe’s story begins. An intense journey that pulls you in and never lets go.
He…. the Story of Joe and Natalie continues. To fight a monster, sometimes you must become one.
A story that has left me breathless. Gripping and compelling. This story has a darker feel than She, yet you need to go there to comprehend the depth of the tragedies Natalie has endured. Joe’s unending love and passion for Natalie drives him to do whatever necessary to save his love. Natalie’s spirit and belief in the one person to show her the meaning of unconditional and true love keeps her enduring the pain, so she can find the light and love she knows she deserves.
Emotional is an understatement when describing this Duet by Kailee Reese Samuels. A must read story of what the soul can endure when you find your Soulmate.
She
These might be the first stories by this author that I’ve read but they definitely will not be the last! This writer grabs your attention from the get go, reels you in and keeps you dangling until the conclusion.
Joseph or Little Joey Melton the youngest son of four boys is set to become a lawyer like everyone else in his family, a pathway chosen by his parents. He describes himself as ‘..an affluent, spoiled brat.’ I didn’t see him in that manner at first but as his past emerges, well he was more self aware than I realised. Natalie Blum is the second daughter of two college professors and has a twin brother. “…the fireball with cherry lips and lush curves.” (As described by Joe.)
‘She’ is Natalie and ‘He’ is Joseph, both embark on an incredibly dark journey.
Intense hatred, which is such a deep and passionate emotion, is how I felt at times when reading this book. Towards both some of the characters and events that are described in the story, graphic but not overtly so. There are plenty of analogies to create a very clear mind map of this story. The emotional ride is no lame ‘hop in and go for a spin’ type you’d find in an amusement park, nothing amusing at all.
There are plenty of twists and turns, so many so that at times it’s hard to keep up, although things are eventually explained carefully. The mystery heightens the further you go in the story.
He
We are immersed in the misery of Joe who has lost his wife Natalie and is grieving deeply. Told mainly from Natalie’s point of view, this explains the depravity of her family and community members. He is every bit as dark as She if not more however it answers all of those questions from book 1 and finally all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. So many pieces are interwoven in an almost plaited design, it is very intricate.
Natalie’s life has always been filled with darkness and dreadful demons. People she should have been able to trust were abusive and sick. How much one person is supposed to take is beyond believable and heart breaking.
This story is at many times frightening, sadistic, savage, twisted, pure evil and more but at other times there are touches of of humour to lighten things, ideally placed too!
There are warnings attached to this duet, take notice as they are real but if you don’t have triggers, and I hope you don’t, then I can safely say you are in fine a wild ride!
She
It’s a dark, gritty and an emotional rollercoaster of a story. From the very start of my journey in to this story, I did not know what to expect. I had my thoughts of the story after a couple of chapters in, but suddenly one twist after another occurs…and I’m lost at what the story is trying to tell. And I’m like “-Come on! Let the couple get a break!” But no, the author is relentless in her dark and twisted mind. I love it!!
“Change isn’t good. It is difficult and painful, squeezing every drop of your soul into another form where I can only hope to make a home. But I don’t have a choice in this change. It is out of my hands.”
Can’t say I liked either of the characters in the beginning, they where either too lost or too weak.. Both flawed, but relentless in their love for each other. But they grew on me through out the story, their hope, love and the fire to fight for what was theirs. To make their own map on the future.
All the lies, all the secrets…who can you trust to tell the truth? What really happened back then? Who all is on it?
The writing style, I thought it was beautiful written, like it was to balance the horrific storyline.
I feel it’s kinda wrong to say I loved it, but I did. And I can’t wait for the next book!
He
I have been impatiently waiting for this book, since She ended with a cliffhanger!
He, is continuing right where we left off in She, and what a journey! So dark and twisted, with some major angst and mind blowing ending!
Joe is a man any woman would be lucky to have in their life, a man so determined to do whatever it takes to save his woman, his love. *sigh*
“And now I plan on being a very, very bad man to lay down the law with a come to Jesus moment of retribution. I won’t suppress my evil as I let the madman inside of me take hold. And be one very unkind motherfucker.”
This author has a way of writing, that will break your heart and then as you read on, your heart is mended peice by peice!
I loved it!!
“Good enough forever”
SHE:
“My actions do not have to make sense; love doesn’t make sense.”
Shocked, happy, scared, angry and heartbroken are a few emotions She, by Kailee Reese Samuels, pulled from me. I definitely needed tissues while reading Natalie and Joe’s story, and at the end a heavy drink and a smoke….I don’t even smoke!!
“If fate exists, then love blooms upon it like a growth, a mold, a toxin—those signals couldn’t be ignored. She was mine from her birth just as I was hers.”
This is the beautifully dark love story of Joe and Natalie. ‘She’ is told in Joe’s POV which I absolutely loved. Since the first chapter I started falling for Joe. He is caring, focused, determined and a little obsessive. Natalie is beautiful, brave and damaged, some may even call her twisted. I was automatically intrigued by her and cannot wait to get fully inside her head. Her history is truly gut wrenching.
“I must tear her from the seams and stitch her back together again”
There are a few parts in the story that I can honestly say I did not see coming. Two scenes had me squirming in my seat and left unsure about my feelings and thoughts on the situation. I had to put the book down both times to process what I just read but I ended up loving the little turn of events. There is a certain side character that I loved to hate and another one in which I wanted to jump on his bike and run away with forever.
“There is a point in our lives where we cross over a threshold for which we can never return.”
I had goosebumps the entire time while reading the last chapter. I certainly didn’t expect the plot twist we are given but I should learn by now that KRS is full of surprises. Every second of this book had me on the edge. Their love is hard, deep and not always pretty, I found myself drawn to the darkness of it.
“We can change and grow together. Or we can mutilate the love into nothing.”
This is a duet so fair warning it ends on a cliffhanger but wow what a cliffhanger it was. I’m desperate, nervous and going out of my mind waiting for He, the conclusion of their story. She is a definite must read. If you are looking for a book that will hold you captive and leave you begging for more, you need to read this!!
“I will ride with her to hell and eternal damnation holding her hand because that is what love does.”
HE:
“I will make them scurry out from beneath the surface and take sight of all the ugly. The light will burn them and leave nothing but ash.”
Holy hell I need a moment to collect my thoughts, my heart, my feelings, and my breath. Going into this book I needed answers. Will everyone make it out okay, will everyone be punished, and most of all, how will it end? We are given Natalie and Joey’s dark, twisted and at times beautiful journey in HE.
“We still as every pain and pleasure she has ever known become mine to keep, and I become the one to carry her burdens and enjoy her bliss.”
The horrors that Natalie has had to endure are beyond horrible but she is brave, tough and I would go as far to say that she is indestructible. I’ve been waiting to get inside her head and I loved her voice. Joe is out for blood. I fell in love with him even more in this one. He definitely proved, without a doubt, he is not a weakling. Both characters grow and become stronger and fiercer.
“I won’t suppress my evil as I let the madman inside of me take hold. And be one very unkind motherf….r.”
This book, this duet had me in knots. I have never read anything quite like it before. The first book was dark but this one is pitch black. Some parts were painful to read but Joey and Natalie’s love shines through the darkness and is beautiful, strong and unconditional.
“I’m the sun and wind and rain—I’m going to watch you grow into a marvelous masterpiece.”
KRS always challenges and pushes my boundaries until I’m on the edge grasping for more. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just say that I absolutely love when authors cross over and intertwine characters within a new book. I couldn’t be happier with the ending and the last chapter actually made me giddy. Yes, giddy!! If you crave the dark I highly recommend this duet.
“Our island will surface from the waters in our rebirth. I must believe. I must have faith.”
This is that one book that has you on edge at every page, wanting to slap some sense into someone and then wanting to throw your kindle/book across the room. Kailee has a way of weaving all these emotions in you and then just when you think you have it under control and figure something out BAM another twist! If you have not read anything by this author then i suggest you start with the suggested order from her website with The Story of Salvatore series going all the way to this book. Kailee has quickly become my go to author as I can not get enough of this Sal world and really cant remember the last time i was completely anxious waiting for answers…can not wait for more!
SHE … Natalie and Joes story pulls at your heartstrings. Wow I’m bawling my eyes out and just shocked and overwhelmed by this book! A very intense story in each page. Natalie, I can say is one strong woman and blindsides me how she hasn’t just giving up on life. Joe oh that man the minute he meets Natalie he wants her. So many lies though will it all pull them apart? Dark, nasty, angst, shocking story that you never want it to end. I can’t wait for the next book to come out! 5/5 unkind stars
HE …. This series is the best books this author has written hands down! … First of all you have to read She before this book. He continues exactly where She left off and wow I’m blown away. Every page makes your heart skip a beat and I was dying to know what happens next. I bit all my nails off, paced and even yelled out loud while reading this story! Natalie how strong this woman truly is amazes me. Then Joe we see this determination through his eyes and the emotions had me a crying mess. No spoilers here just keep a open mind and open heart to Natalie and Joe’s story. Dark, gritty, very intense but in the end light and love and strength always wins. 5/5 stars if I could rate this series the way I want it would be 10 stars
