She Gets What She Wants begins the Fearless Fairytale series with a story that will touch your emotions, as well as deliver a smile or chuckle along the way. I loved the way we get to see Devon’s growth as we meet her before that ugly duckling gets the chance to grow into a beautiful swan. I will always be drawn to a fairytale retelling in a modern setting and that’s part of what you’ll find here… but certainly not all to be discovered.
Devon has dreams that she’s hiding close to her heart, she wants more out of life than she’s seeing right now but that push, that drive, or even that chance hasn’t happened… yet. When the one person she expected to find support for her dreams makes hurtful comments, well, perhaps that was the final straw. Devon is certainly used to being overlooked, overworked, and underappreciated at work and it seems by friends as well. That chance comes along at exactly the right moment. Determined to live her dream, to believe she’s capable, and to reach out for what she wants in life, Devon will leave small-town Indiana and head for Hollywood. Dreams often take hard work to achieve, and Devon’s about to get to work on her dream.
I enjoyed She Gets What She Wants so much. It’s certainly not fun to come to realize that people you thought were friends were actually holding you back from reaching for what you desire most in life. That was a hard moment for Devon, but if I can be proud of a fictional character then I was so proud when she took her talent, herself, and headed to the one place that she could achieve all that she is now driven to prove… to them, and to herself.
I had fun with the Hollywood set where people were just being people doing their jobs – no backstabbing, some gossip oh definitely, but every workplace has that going on. I wanted Devon to get her dreams, to find the man who would love her just for herself, so I can easily say that I loved this fairytale retelling. Oh, there are bumps and potholes, but every road trip will have those – it’s how we deal, how we learn that makes all the difference in the outcome of the journey.
Which man did Devon decide was just right for her in the end? You should pick up She Gets What She Wants to find out for yourself, I’m not about to deny you a great story by telling.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
From disaster to happily ever after.
The title of this book couldn’t have been more perfect. Devon Jacobs does get what she wants, but it wasn’t an easy road for her. She was stuck at a stressful job and in love with Jason, who didn’t share the same feelings for her. So, when Devon’s friend, Gabby, calls from Hollywood and tells her there is an opening on the tv show she works at, Devon can’t say no. Her dream is to be a screenwriter and this could be her big break. Devon’s new life and job are going good and she is crushing on Ryan Roberts, the star of the show. But Devon’s fears hold her back when Ryan confesses his feeling for her after Jason starts showing interest in her. Now it’s up to Devon to be strong and ditch Jason, which seems to be a challenge as he is clingy, and win Ryan back.
This book was the perfect escape. I couldn’t get enough of it. It has just the right balance of love and drama. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
New beginnings, second chances, and dreams come true
A fairytale retelling of the Ugly Duckling. The main character, Devon, is not living to her full potential in her hometown and dreams of escaping to move to Hollywood to write for television. An opportunity arises and she takes the chance. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and especially seeing the growth of the main character. The varying relationships between the characters and the drama involved kept the story moving and intriguing.
I received this arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book I’ve read by Denise and I enjoyed it a lot. This is Devon Jacob’s story. She is living in her hometown of Bergman, Indiana and working for the local paper as a columnist. She feels like she’s in a rut and wants to ultimately move to Hollywood and be a screenwriter. She hangs out with her best friend Lisa and is in love with her friend Jason. At the start of the book, they attend their class reunion. We learn that Devon is more on the plus size and Lisa suggests changing her diet to help her. They have a fun night and Devon decided to tell Jason she was in love with him. It doesn’t go well for her. He comes back to her house and kisses her and she tells him how she feels and he tells her he’s only seen her as a friend. She is devastated. She then learns through Lisa and social media that he has gotten back together with his ex and is engaged and away on a romantic vacation. At the start we learn Lisa has a nice, steady boyfriend named Charles. At the reunion she meets up with Brandon and starts seeing him secretly in addition to Charles. Devon is very worried about her behavior.
A friend of Devon and Lisa’s from school, Gabby, calls her. She is living and working in Hollywood in the wardrobe area of a tv show. She found out there is an opening for a PA but it will start immediately. Devon decides to leave Her hometown, family and friends and move out to California. She moves in with Gabby and starts helping out the head writer. She loves her job. She meets one of the stars, Ryan Roberts and they hit it off. She sees them as just friends. Gabby is watching what she eats and is working out and Devon decides to join her and help her own appearance. Devon offers to help her boss with storyline change ideas and quickly becomes a valued employee. Her appearance is changing, the more weight she loses. Devon’s work helps out Ryan and he takes her out for drinks to thank her. She is clueless as his feelings for her develop. They start spending time together and she has many questions come up. Unfortunately, she doesn’t always react well and causes herself some additional heartache.
Meanwhile, back in Berman, Lisa spirals out of control trying to date both Branson and Charles secretly. She is big into posting on social media and suddenly there’s posts of her with Jason too and negative comments toward Devon. Jason started to text Devon once he had heard she was moving to Hollywood but she ignored him. In spite of the engagement to his ex and the pictures with Lisa, he continues to try and talk with Devon.
I enjoyed the characters, the drama between them and the pictures created by the author’s descriptions of what they look like as well as their homes. The triangle between Devon, Jason and Ryan was intriguing to read about. The character of Lisa was so interesting to read about with all her issues and actions. Gabby was a great friend to Devon and I enjoyed their story as well. I gave this 5 stars and I highly recommend this book.
An incredible life opens up for a small town writer who dreams of Hollywood. The job of a PA (production assistant) on a sitcom set rolls into much more plus a romantic friendship develops with the lead star. Trouble on the home front brings many things to the forefront and feelings have to be dealt with.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is my favorite book by author Denise N Wheatley. I sat down to read it when it came out and I never moved from my sofa until I finished it. It was absolutely wonderful! To read this you are reading a cool retelling of a Fairy Tale Of the Ugly Duckling, Devon lives in her hometown and has always dreamed of working in Hollywood and writing screenplays. She is a curvy girl and one of her best friends Lisa never misses a chance to let her know that. When the book begins Devon works in town at a publication and frankly gets taken advantage of by her boss as far as work goes. She is more than ready to move on if the opportunity were to come up and it does. That is what this book is all about. Gabby another friend reaches out to Devon and well life moves up and onwards. I love how we got to see clearly the life behind the scene of a tv series and in Hollywood itself. This book was well written and kept my attention from start to finish and I can not wait to read more from this author.

Who ever said nice girls can’t win?
This is Devon Jacobs’s story.
It was Friday night, and the women were dining on the rooftop of the Fremont Hotel, one of the few hot spots in their small town of Berman, Indiana.
Devon had just wrapped up an exhausting ten-hour day at The Berman Post, where she worked as an underpaid, underappreciated community events columnist.
columnist. She couldn’t wait to decompress over cocktails and a platter of all-fried-everything.
She Gets What She Wants by Denise N. Wheatley is a 4 star book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
This is at heart a basic retelling of the ugly duckling fairy tale and it is a sweet romance that you will love every page of There is no huge angst or drama just a lovely escape from life for a little while
Devon Jacobs dreams of leaving her small town and trying to build a career for herself when a drunken confession of her love for her best friend Jason leads to humiliation it is the impetus that she needs Now she has built herself a career as a screen writer in Hollywood and even has a fledgling relationship with the star of the show she screen writes for Ryan Roberts Can she get over her fears and build something with Ryan and what will happen when Jason comes back on the scene wanting to start something with her Which relationship will she choose you will have to read to see
She Gets What She Wants is the second book that I have read written by Denise N. Wheatley. I must say I liked it, I liked it a lot. I liked Devon Jacobs and many of the others, especially Lena. I liked the positive professional way that the Hollywood set was portrayed. While it had the gossipy high schoolish side, it was not a mean or cutthroat environment. Besides most places of work has the gossipy side to it. These characters have strong work ethics, loyalty, leadership, and kindness as attributes. These are not always associated with the Hollywood crowd. It was some from Devon’s hometown that are lacking these basics characteristics which are often taken for granted that the people there would have.
Then the title of the series is wonderful! Fearless Fairytales is a modern take on the old ones we grew up reading except better. Devon was the ugly duckling who worked to grown into a beautiful swan. Let me clarify that, she had always been a beautiful person but never saw her herself that way until she moved to LA. While the reader could see her hometown friends were holding her back, she could not. Thank goodness for spunk, determination, creativity, and positive friends. The new motto is, “Be fearless, girl, be fearless!”
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
