New York Times bestseller Allison Brennan’s two series collide in Shattered, a powerful, enthralling read about the craving for revenge and the desire for justice. Over a span of twenty years, four boys have been kidnapped from their bedrooms, suffocated, and buried nearby in a shallow grave. Serial killer or coincidence? That’s the question investigative reporter Maxine Revere sets out to answer … reporter Maxine Revere sets out to answer when an old friend begs her to help exonerate his wife, who has been charged with their son’s recent murder. But Max can do little to help because the police and D.A. won’t talk to her–they think they have the right woman. Instead, Max turns her attention to three similar cold cases. If she can solve them, she might be able to help her friend.
Justin Stanton was killed twenty years ago, and his father wants closure–so he is willing to help Max with her investigation on one condition: that she work with his former sister-in-law– Justin’s aunt, FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid. Trouble is, Max works alone, and she’s livid that her only access to the case files, lead detective and witnesses depends on her partnering with a federal agent on vacation. She wants the career-making story almost as much as the truth–but if she gets this wrong, she could lose everything.
Haunted by Justin’s death for years, Lucy yearns to give her family–and herself–the closure they need. More important, she wants to catch a killer. Lucy finds Max’s theory on all three cases compelling–with Max’s research added to Lucy’s training and experience, Lucy believes they can find the killer so justice can finally be served. But the very private Lucy doesn’t trust the reporter any more than Max trusts her.
Max and Lucy must find a way to work together to untangle lies, misinformation, and evidence to develop a profile of the killer. But the biggest question is: why were these boys targeted? As they team up to find out what really happened the night Justin was killed, they make a shocking discovery: Justin’s killer is still out there … stalking another victim … and they already may be too late.

This novel from Brennan has Max, an investigative journalist and Lucy, the FBI agent from her other series, on the trial of a possible serial killer. Max is asked to investigate some cold case murders of young boys to help an old college frond who’s wife is on trial for the murder of their son. He thinks there’s a connection- Max isn’t so sure but decides to investigate. One of the cold cases involves the nephew of Lucy and to protect her family she decides to help Max out. The book is a fast paced page turner that I found really enjoyable!
This was a good book can’t wait to read more of Allison Brennan books.
Maxine Revere and Lucy Kincaid team up to find a killer! Great pairing along with the Kincaid clan interjecting their various talents to speed the case along. I’ve read all of the Kincaid series and now the Maxine Revere series…awaiting the new one Abandoned. Brennan’s ability to keep you into the plot with the twist and background information weaves a tale that will make you want to read to the end in ONE day. 🙂 It took me 3 only because I had to sleep. Great story. Thanks.
Another Max Revere adventure. Cold Cases are her speciality, but this time the cold case involves and active case.
Max’s college boyfriend contacts her for help and it’s a whooper of an ask! His wife is accused and going to trial for the murder of their young son.
This book was a little different than the previous Max Revere stories I have read and enjoyed. With this book, Max is, against her better judgement, working with and FBI Agent, Lucy Kincaid. Max and Lucy begin an extensive investigation into three cold cases involving young boys being taken from their homes and killed. To make things even more interesting, Lucy’s seven year old nephew was one of the victims 20 years ago!
Things just get more interesting with twists and turns throughout the story.
I picked this one up because it was part of Brenda Novak’s Online Book Club. Boy am I glad I did! This is a mix of two of Allison Brennan’s series, her Max Revere and Lucy Kincaid. These characters are very different and butt heads in the beginning, but ultimately decide to work together to solve the cold cases of three young boys, one of which is related to Lucy. This is a very good murder mystery, with a lot of suspense and action in it. I am definitely going to go back and read the rest of both series now!
I read this book for a book group. I was a little worried about reading this book without reading the first three books in the series. I discovered that I didn’t feel that I was missing anything while reading this fabulous book! This is a hard to put down suspenseful murder mystery.
You experience the emotions of each character right along with them as you read the story.
The main characters, Lucy Kincaid and Max Revere are great. The way they didn’t trust each other in the beginning. Then the mutual respect they had for each other at the end. They have a way of figuring out a mystery. I would love to see another story with them working together again.
I look forward to reading all of Allison’s books after reading Shattered!
What a fantastic book. I couldn’t put it down. I would read until my eyes couldn’t focus then I would try and read some more. I was gifted this book and enjoyed it so much that I had to get the rest of the series. Thank you Allison!
Love all of Allison Brennan’s books!
A page turner that kept me reading far into the night. Three little boys are dead possible four within a 20 year span. One killer? More than one? Well worth the time to read.
This book took me out of my usual genre reading and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Max Revere is an investigative reporter who has been asked, no begged, to look into the possibility of a serial killer of young boys and how it may relate to the killing of his son. She usually only investigates cold cases but promises to take a look. This brings in Lucy Kincaid who was related to one of the earlier victims. Can they work together? Can they trust each other enough to not explode and bring it all down?
There is a lot of backstory which I found helpful but made the early part of the story lag but even though there was so much I slogged through it and tried to keep it all straight. Once the backstory was over and the rest took over, the book flew and was GREAT. For this reason, I will be on the lookout for the next book in the series (either Max or Lucy.
Maxine “Max” Revere is a talented investigative reporter. That’s why red flags went up when a former boyfriend calls here to tell her his wife is on trial for killing their son & everyone is missing the other similar crimes. He’s positive it’s the work of a serial killer. As Max starts to look into the prior crimes, she hits a roadblock. The father of the presumed first victim, DA Andrew Stanton, told her his ex-wife’s family would stall & block her investigation unless she convinced Lucy Kincaid Rogan that her theories were on the up & up. Lucy is Andrew’s ex-sister-in-law.
Rookie FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid Rogan isn’t sure what to believe. Is Max just trying to sensationalize her cousins death or does she really have a lead? Why is the family overreacting the way they are? Lucy is tired of always being concerned someone might figure out what happened to her. If she can figure out who killed Justin, that’s a good thing. She isn’t sure about Max’s motives so she decides to stay close.
Allison Brennan has two wonderful series & has managed to come up with the perfect cross over story to bring them together. At first I didn’t think the personalities of the main characters, Max & Lucy would work together. They were both too much alike – strong, independent, aggressive, intelligent, used to being in charge. Max wasn’t used to having her hands tied or her integrity questioned. Lucy didn’t trust Max or her motives. She had to give her credit though. Max knew what she was doing & had researchers behind her finding the information she needs. I ended up admiring them as a team. They each knew their own strengths & what they brought to the table.
The action is fast paced & riveting. The plot grabs your attention & through twists & turns keeps you on the edge of your seat. The tension between Max & Lucy adds to the drama without detracting from the facts. The tension between Lucy & her family is new & ramps up the stakes of the case. I really enjoyed this story & hope Max & Lucy end up working together again.
Shattered by author Allison Brennan is a fast paced, unstoppable read which delivers big on suspense and great characters! This new book explodes with two of Brennan’s greats…Maxine Revere and Lucy Kincaid!
Maxine Revere is an investigative reporter with a TV show with NET. She delves into murder cold cases and digs until she has answers. I enjoy the Maxine Revere series!
I also admire the Lucy Kincaid series and this one is full of Lucy’s insights into her family, the past, and how horrifying events have changed the whole family and their perception of her.
So together you have Maxine and Lucy working on a case which could involve the unsolved murder of Lucy’s nephew, Justin. But during the course of the story -TRUST- between Maxine and Lucy is very fragile.
I don’t post spoilers, but this is written so well and the characters are portrayed with such respect for their pasts, emotions, and their priorities in racing to chase down a killer of young boys.
This is one of the very best books I have read this year and love it!
Great Job, Allison Brennan in bringing together two of my favorite characters!!
