I’ve read most of the books about this character. They are educational and very entertaining
The Sharp Serries is Bernard’s best work.
Great story about a time period I was not very familiar with. Gut-wrenching detail of what war was like in the 1700’s, and the character of men that succeeded (if they were lucky).
Love the characters, action, hopeless situations that have solutions; the historical background of it all.
I discovered the Sharpe’s series while I was in college. I found them historically informative, and real page-turners. I also love the TV series with Sean Bean as Sharpe, which I discovered after having read the books.
I’ve read all the Sharpe books. This one is good, but not my favorite. It’s nice to either read them in chronological order or publication order.
As usual, Cornwell is excellent as he describes battle scenes. This is a good read, but unlike most of his books, Sharpe’s Gold seemed to drag in places.
This book is for those who like military, historical fiction from the era of the Napoleon wars. This is one of a series following Sharps career as he rises thro7gh the ranks of the British army by the judicious application of bravery, audacity, and luck. BBC produced a well regarded series based these books a few years ago.
Cornwell is Cornwell, and Sharpe is Sharpe.
After reading a bunch of others, this is formulaic, but it is such a good formula, handled so well, that I eagerly get the next one I haven’t read.
Corwell puts the fictional Sharpe at the center point of the historical action, and makes it believable to the point I want to visit the battlefield, and see the place where it happened.
The Sharpe series is about an English soldier during the time of the Neapolitan War. Sharpe is a courageous and inspiring character. Cornwell’s account of Sharpe’s exploits are realistic of the period and keep you reading to find out what happens next.
I love this whole series, or for that matter, just about anything by Bernard Cornwell.
