The book’s better than the mini-series. Some things are better when seen through you’re mind’s eye and not someone else’s. Flynn is to horrible, but sadly real human behavior, what Stephen King is to horrors not human at all.
This is a sweaty, sour, slippery novel — a lot like a fever dream the main character might have. It is difficult and devastating and impossible to put down.
Ultimately, it’s a novel about children and violence: the kind done to them and the kind they can do. If I figured out the killer and the motivation very early on, it’s only because those …
I don’t know why I didn’t read this book earlier; I loved it. The setting, the writing, the creepy ethereal tone throughout. I found it to be original and captivating.
It also started me on a thrillers kick again, so if any one has any recs, let me know!
Sharp Objects is a daring tale of a reporter who returns to her hometown to cover the story of a string of murders of young girls, but when she gets there she’s faced with memories of a troubled childhood and the still-existing dysfunctional family.
The twists and turns of this psychological thriller will keep you guessing and turning the pages …
Whew. This book put the “fun” in dysfunctional family. Plus it offered a compelling and scary depiction of tweens and teens. I’m sure there are teens out there that resemble those in this book, and it’s scary.
READ THE BOOK BEFOR$E YOU WATCH ON TV! (Sorry about the caps, but I mean it.) For me, this is the best of Gillian Flynn’s books, although they’re all worth a read. Sharp Objects is a haunting read. The protagonist is captivating in the way broken heroines often re, but this is exceptional characterisation. A thriller, a suspense novel in the …
Although the subject matter is difficult to handle, this book offers great insight into the problems of anxiety and cutting. Toss in a murder mystery, and this story is a winner. I highly recommend watching the HBO adaptation of the book as well.
I just finished this on audio book. It was my first Gillian Flynn novel and I absolutely loved it. I wasn’t ready for it to end and will now be looking for the series on HBO.
I found myself trying to figure out who the killer was right along with the main character. There are so many twists that you think you might have it figured out only to …
A creepy psychological thriller you won’t want to put down until the mystery is solved!
Well, given Sharp Objects just premiered on HBO and I love Gillian Flynn (saw her speak at the Southern Book Festival), it seemed fitting to splurge on S.O. Absolutely a fabulous addictive read I indulged in over the last three days. GET this book if you’re into dark suspense thrillers.
Became an absolute fan of this author with this book. Stunning read.
Although this is a decent book, I liked Flynn’s Dark Places so much better. Also, I would not classify this as horror (as Goodreads classifies it), even though it has some seriously “messed up” situations that involve general debauchery in a town full of debutantes and rich folk who are primarily amused by the macabre, gossip abound.
This book had all the elements of story that captivated me and kept me turning the page. Psychological storytelling at its best. The protagonist is struggling to make herself whole. When she sets out to write a story about two murders that take place in her hometown we meet her dysfunctional family and begin a roller-coaster ride. Flynn is a …
I just finished the HBO series, and it prompted me to reread the book from a few years back. It was as haunting and wonderful as all of Flynn’s books, and it was a pleasure to reread this masterpiece. Any fan of Gone Girl should check out Flynn’s earlier work, which is every bit as haunting!
This book is messsssed up. Yet so good. Would give 4.5 stars if I could. Once the killer was revealed I was hungry for a little bit more development, but otherwise amazing characters and a believable setting. This book will mess with your head. I wanted to read it before watching the HBO series and was so glad I did – can’t wait to watch!
This book is so good. All of Gillian Flynn’s book are good but this has to be my favorite. There were points in the story where I stopped and wondered about the mental stability of the author. lol How does she come up with this stuff!?
I read Gone Girl a few years ago just before the movie came out, and I loved that book. I’m a sucker for a twisted, unexpected ending. I’ve had this book on my to be read list for a long, long time, and just now finally grabbed it. This book was written before Gone Girl, before her rise to fame with the movie and the TV show.
First, we have the …
Gillian Flynn, maybe best known for Gone Girl, excels at portraying twisted female characters. In this novel, Camille Preaker disregards her common sense and returns to her small, Missouri hometown to write stories for a Chicago newspaper about the murders of two pre-teen girls. Haunted by the death of her younger sister, Camille is no match for …
Flynn’s narrative is fast-paced and intoxicating. Better still, I have completely fallen in love with her protagonist Camille Preaker. This is a riveting text with unique language and wonderful characters.
An awesome story and now it’s on Hulu Plus, too!
