Some laws are meant to be broken.I know she’s off limits. A forbidden fruit. Men would kill to taste her.But the law is simple. You touch a woman that isn’t yours: you die.Damn, maybe she is worth dying for. To make her mine. Forever. Or maybe just for a night. Before the chieftain comes for my head. No! That’s just asking for trouble. Got enough of that already.I have to get my shit together and … already.
I have to get my shit together and keep her safe.
Safe from the other men. Safe from me. That’s my job.
Then she touches me. And death never looked sexier.
The Bastard is book one of the Clan of the Woodlands series. For the best reading experience, I recommend reading the series in their appropriate order. This book is a full-length novel which is intended for mature audiences only. Contains no cheating, no cliffhangers and a guaranteed HEA.

I love this writer and her creative style. This is Book 1 in a series, so far, of 6 books. The writer weaves an amazing story from start to finish in each book of this series. This series crosses an apocalyptic world of the future, where women are scarce and to be cherished by a group called the Clansmen of the Woodlands, and a sci-fi work of the future who grows and develops and attempts to control human beliefs, genetics, and procreation. The author builds a world that combines the two, and develops in each book the relationships between two main characters. So, one could read one of the books alone, but the series brings the whole story together. I understand more books are to follow in the series and I can’t wait! Just a warning: There are some pretty steamy sexual situations and violence. Some situations are pretty intense, but so worth theread!
This is the second book in this series as there is a prequel which I encourage everyone to read, although not completely necessary for the enjoyment of this book I suggest it as it’s a great book! It’s a dystopian series and the author has thought up and shared a mesmerizing world. The world and the characters are very well described, and this is a delightful book to read.

The twists in this tale just adds spice to an already exciting and adventurous tale
that will shock you. I highly recommend this tale and eagerly await the next book in this series.
This is a futuristic story that has people separated in classes. Ayanna is a woman from The District and all she wants is to have a baby but when she gets denied for artificial insemination she didn’t know what to do. River is from The Woodlands and after his mother died he had no other family. The District and The Woodlands have different rules also that make them unique from each other. At The Woodlands you can have physical contact, marry and even fall in love. Whereas in The District you aren’t allowed any of that. Ayanna plans to go to The Woodlands in order to achieve her goal of having a family. During her journey there she meets River. River has no clue that she is there for any other reasons than what he has been told. What will happen when he learns the truth? Can they be together?
This is a great story once I started it I couldn’t put it down. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

In the future you have the Clans witch function outside the district with there own laws and rules. But in the District everything is controlled no marriage only birth by artificial insemination they say to keep birth defects down but its really just control there is know desire its all because of there water they put something in it.
Both River and Ayanna have painful past they are from completely different worlds one is ultra clean and false full of secrets the other is raw and primal in nature were you band together to survive and make a community. Ayanna had a difficult childhood her parents were married but there marriage fell apart after her birth it became ugly and toxic and ended badly now that Ayanna is and adult marriage isn’t even allowed but she still wants a child but after the district refuses this she goes to become a teacher for one of the Clans were there are very few women. Even there good and water is different and she is both horrified and curious about them especially her protector River.
River has know past he doesn’t know who his parents are or were he comes from but when his Clan leader says he must look after there new teacher he dose his duty even though it angers him he was about to look for answers. Now these two will have to navigate there differences together to be together.
And yes this book had some slow parts and some grammar issues but the plot is fascinating and interesting and has great potential as a series if done well by the author which is why a have this book 4 instead of 5 stars.

Ms. Ludwig has written another great story with The Clan of the Woodland-The Bastard. Had a good plot that happen way in the future. This is a different kind of future where artificial insemination is the norm without all the love, sex or any emotion. The characters worked really good together. Ayanna and River had different agendas but ended up working well together. I would suggest you start with the prequel. Very engaging book and I’m looking forward to the next story. Will another Woodlands man find love? Ayanna grew up in a house without happiness. Her mother loved her but her father didn’t because he wasn’t her biological father. Her parents fought so much that her mother committee suicide when Ayanna was 14. Now she’s a teacher but wants to be a mom. She is turned down for artificial insemination because of her mother’s suicide. It might run in the family. Her only choice. Go work for the Woodlands Clan, sneak into their lab and inseminate herself. But when she gets there she starts having feelings for River. Supposedly a bastard with dyslexia so he’s not perfect enough to be in the sperm bank. Now what does she do? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Bastard started in the year 2184 and, to be honest, it took me a chapter to figure out the significance of the Woodlands and the District. However, it was so worth it for me because River and Ayanna were characters who were very human and imperfect, but maturing as the story developed. I can highly recommend this novel and I intend to continue on with The Innocent in the Clan of the Woodlands Series.

Set in the future, this clan based story by V.K. Ludwig started out a bit slow for me but eventually picked up speed and became interesting. I loved the characters and their interaction with each other. It was a good read over all.

I love dystopian books that center on our civilization having decided to “evolve” past the need for emotions like desire, love, anger, fear. No need for sex to have babies, there is artificial insemination or test time babies. I love the idea that in the drive to do away with the bad, we get rid of the good. That what this story is. The drive to do away with cancer, generic deficiencies, or inadequacies, they have banned families and marriages. Sex is no longer done because there is no emotions due to “special” water given to the desired population. But outside it’s borders, in the wilds, are the clans that still believe in the old ways like love and family. This is a story of a young woman who is told that she can’t procreate do to undesired anomalies in her family history, so she goes to the Clans pretending to be one thing while being on her on mission. It’s a story of a clansman who thought he was a bastard his whole life but still tries to find meaning in it. They are thrown together and their Fates are changed as they come to see things differently.
I really hope there is more to come for this series. It is well written and engaging. The only down side is the abrupt ending is not even like a cliffhanger as you are not left feeling in suspense, but more like you are missing a chapter or a few pages. More stumped or left with questions as to why the author chose to leaves it the way it is.
