And that’s only the beginning.
Before the month is out, Robert finds himself alone to raise his daughter with no money, no job, and a house that is minutes from being repossessed. Just when he hits rock bottom, a strange visitor arrives at the doorstep of his soon to be foreclosed house with a letter from an Aunt he didn’t know existed.
The offer is simple: look after Aunt Ruth during her dying days, and in return Robert will be bequeathed the Harlop Estate in which she currently resides. It’s a no brainer and Robert jumps at the opportunity, equally motivated by the prospect of financial security as he is for a fresh start.
Problem is, it only takes a few nights in the Harlop Estate before he begins to question Aunt Ruth’s claims that they are the home’s only inhabitants…
It’s the scratching he hears during the night, the voices that he can barely make out over the constant rain, and then there’s the girl with the rat…
With their house foreclosed and their bank accounts liquidated, Robert and his daughter Amy desperately need a place to live. But the question Robert soon finds himself struggling with is whether living in the Harlop Estate is worth it… and if he can survive until Aunt Ruth passes to collect his inheritance.

This book is a real page turner! I had my suspicions about the end of the book but the ending still ends up surprising you. I loved this book and I’m going to continue reading this series!!
The book paints a vivid picture of how wrong everything can go very quickly. Yet there are still twists and turns you’ll never see coming.
Pretty good ghost story with some unexpected twists and turns.
The story lasted longer than my attention, but I did finish it I would prefer that one overused curse word be toned down, especially when his 9 year old daughter was present, but maybe times have changed. If not for that I would recommend it.
Predictable
I read this one evening leading up to Halloween and was really enjoying how genuinely creepy it was. The unfortunate thing was the painfully obvious thing that was making it so creepy was apparently supposed to be a shocking reveal at the end. The pacing at the beginning was fine and I felt empathetic toward the protagonist but partway through it completely falls apart. The ending is so rushed, unsatisfying, and I was baffled by the choices the author made. I then I realized it was all just a “tragic backstory” to begin a series that is 100% undesirable and unearned. At least I got it for free!
I honestly don’t know if I liked this book, or not. It was a fast read, and without any spoilers, the ending wasn’t what I expected.
Another ghost story with no sympathetic characters
pretty good. may read the 2nd in this series.
This book was good but a little too predictable for me
This book had an interesting concept and unreliable narrative-which I’m normally a huge fan of. The writing was not very smooth & while interesting the story was clumsy and not very well fleshed out. The characters were thin and it was difficult to picture them, while reading the book..I’d probably not recommend it.
