#1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris’s Shakespeare’s Landlord is the first book in the Lily Bard mystery series. Welcome to Shakespeare, Arkansas. Lily Bard came to the small town of Shakespeare to escape her dark and violent past. Other than the day-to-day workings of her cleaning and errand-running service, she pays little attention to the town around her. So when she spots a … around her. So when she spots a dead body being dumped in the town green, she’s inclined to stay well away. But she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and despite her best efforts, she’s dragged into the murder case.
Lily doesn’t care who did it, but when the police and local community start pointing fingers in her direction, she realizes that proving her innocence will depend on finding the real killer in quiet, secretive Shakespeare.

This is my favorite series by Charlaine Harris. There are only five books but they’re pretty great. 🙂
Spring is a busy time for me but I never stop reading and rereading favorite books. Charmaine Harris is a well known author of two great series. But it is the little appreciated third series starting with Shakespeare’s Landlord that I always reread and so enjoy. It’s like visiting an old friend in a small community where gossip is good and even the most bland person might be up to something. The neat part is you see it all through the the eyes of Lily, an outsider trying to just blend in. And Lily is memorable enough to keep the series going through more mysteries about the people, the town and about her tragic past. I recommend starting with this one, her first and then watch Lily change over time in the other books. So sit down for just a bit and relish the town of Shakespeare and all its little quirks like murder.
I enjoyed this novel. It makes you think why people murder. And also it’s good thing for women to take self defense classes. You should be able to take care of yourself. I would recommend this book for other people to read
Love this series. I wish it has lasted longer.
Lily Bard is a survivor. She is intelligent, strong and trustworthy. Enjoyable mystery from one of my favorite authors!
Great book – enjoyed the characters
Can’t remember plot. Did finish it though.
I loved the whole series.
Very interesting and different kind of book. At first I wasn’t sure what was going on but then I got into it. Very good book.
This was my favorite series of Harris’ until I added the Sookie Stackhouse books. Lily Bard is a very tough heroine and she has a lot of horror behind her and is just trying to live an uneventful life. Sadly it never works out that way. As the house cleaner in her small town, she know more about many people than is healthy for her and is embroiled in murders. I wish she’d write more of these books but she did bring her into another series book for a glimpse. I love the small Arkansas town, the quirky people and a very compelling lead character you’ll want to come out on top.
I love this author, Charlaine Harris. Her writing style is quirky as are book characters. If you are looking for an entertaining read , then choose something by Harris.
Love the Shakespeare series.
I’m a big fan of CH and most of her works adapt well. This series has not aged well. It is very dated.
I loved everything in this short series. Wonderful heroine character. I couldn’t put it down.
I read this book when it was first published years ago. Grittier than the Aurora Teagarden series (or it is to me), I still loved the entire series. Wish she would’ve written more!
Very enjoyable read
These are some of my favorite Chatlaine Harris characters. I wish she would continue the series.
Great main character!
I like Lily Bard, will continue to read books in this series!
There are layers to the main character and her life is so different that I really enjoyed it.
