“The Umbrella Academy meets the Hunger Games in this bold twist on a classic magical young adult adventure.” Jaymin Eve, Bestselling Author of Supernatural Academy You Don’t Choose The Academy. The Academy Chooses You. I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already… Until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a … man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence.
In an invitation.
My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive.
If he doesn’t go our entire family will be killed.
It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago—the same place he mysteriously died.
The academy has already killed one sibling. I’ll be damned if they take another.
I do the only thing an older sister can: chop off my hair, strap on two bras to flatten the girls, and take my brother’s place.
Magic and monsters are real. Assassins are coming for me, and the dead are prone to rise. What’s a girl faking it as a boy supposed to do? That’s right—beat the academy at its own game.
Or die trying.
Shadowspell Academy Book 1 and Shadowspell Academy Book 2 end with a cliffhanger

“When K.F. Breene and Shannon Mayer get together it’s pure writing magic! Shadowspell Academy takes the college admission process to a whole new action-packed level.” – Michelle M. Pillow, NYT & USAT Bestselling Author of the Warlocks MacGregor series
Thoroughly enjoyable young adult fantasy/paranormal series introducing some very likeable characters.
Devoured this 1st book in the series and just pre-ordered the 2nd & 3rd books. I love the main character, Wild, and her kick-ass now and take names later attitude. Cannot wait to see what happens in the 2nd book!
I loved it! So much, that I can’t wait for May and release day of book two. Both did an excellent job of creating this world and working together, while not losing their individual touch.
Shadowspell academy is very well written, the characters are well developed and the scenes draw you right in to the book. The story is kind of reminded me of Harry Potter meets the Hunger Games. There are a lot of original ideas and plot twists in this book.
Wild is the main character and is one strong female lead. I love reading books with unapologetic strong female lead characters.
Wild’s older brother left for the academy and was doing well there but then something happened and he ended up dead, now the academy is back at Wilds house and looking to take her little brother. Wild is not willing to lose another brother to the academy so she needs to think fast, because telling the academy no is really not something you can do.
This one is a page turner for sure and was so good that I already pre-ordered the next book in the series.
I am in love! You can fall in love with a book, right? “Shadowspell Academy: The Culling Trials” is the work of two of the best paranormal romance authors in Kindle Unlimited, Shannon Mayer and KF Breene, and it is awesome! Fantastic pace, great heroine written really strongly, wonderful world building with lots of mysteries incorporated, and the tension is magnificent. Bit of a cliffhanger ending. I’ve already marked the date for the next two books in the trilogy.
Ah hell, another series I’m going to be addicted to! Another freaking awesome & wickedly addictive story by two of my favorite Indie authors! I love Wilde! She’s a strong willed and charismatic heroine who has some very impressive skills & her rag tag crew are quite interesting in their own right. This is a nice start to a new series but I’ll be honest, I wished it was longer and I could definitely do without the cliffhanger! Though having been a fan of both authors for some time now, I’m sure we won’t have to wait months for the next book. Looking forward to book 2!!
**Fascinating**
Shannon and KFB make a killer writing team! I’m already hooked on this mash up of Harry Potter meets Hungry Games!
I absolutely love Wild! She’s loyal, fierce and badass!
Although I’m not crazy about novella’s, I can’t help but love this little story. The characters are unique and fun, the world building is nothing short of what you would expect of these amazing author’s and the storyline just drags you in and keeps you glued to the story, just wanting more! I can’t wait for the next book!!!
Great read! Quick and action-packed, I really enjoyed this fun jaunt. I listened to the audiobook and it has a great narrator who makes the book come alive!
A fast pacing narrative, great characters, amazing scenarios. Secrets that are carried throughout it and it ends in a cliffhanger. Let’s see what comes next for Wild, Ethan, Wally, Pete, Orin, and Rory.
Faced paces and full of action and humor this book was simply fun. I really enjoyed the begining of the world building, the misfits and their uniqueness. This story was light and easy but flipped by with excitment. I do suggest you have all the books ready to go as this one ends abruptly without warning, not even a cliffhanger just ends in the middle of a scene. I am jumping into book two now! Such fun. 4.5 stars.
Love this series! I can’t wait until the next book comes out. I love both these authors separately!! Together they are a powerhouse! Full of intrigue, mystery, suspense, monsters, and a bit of snarky. Pick up this series, you will love it!!
Oh my goodness this book is awesome! This book has a mix of Maze Runner and Hunger Games. Then add a Twist of Harry Potter wow. Kind of a short story. Really wish it would have been longer. Greatness was at work here. I cannot wait to see what Wild gets into. Her little group of friends are going to be a asset to her.* Squeal * total Fangirl.
What do you get when you combine wit and sarcasm with snark and drama? THIS! This wonderful page turner that I couldn’t put down. Shannon and KF killed it with this one. Must read!
Great start to a new series by two excellent authors! By the way you can’t tell it’s dual written.
I have to admit I did enjoy this book much more than I expected to.
Hunger Games meet Harry Potter? Yes, I think so even if I know little of Harry Potter but enough to see it. I am new to K.F.Breene’s writing but I’m so familiar with Shannon Mayer’s books and these characters and concept is so Shannon Mayer-like which I love so much!
Wild – her name says everything about her! And her crew of weirdos and outcasts! They add a lot of funny moments. Action packed with twists and turns. Loved it!
The biggest minus is that this book is so short. Don’t be afraid of it because all three books are out already!
I felt like it was clear that this is the first of a series of books. It was definitely the part of a series where the authors are building character profiles and setting the why of an epic battle to come. When they start the trial there is definitely more action and the characters have to start to choose whose side they want to be on as they progress through the trials. Alliances are made and people stand out as enemies. This was an extremely quick read. It is not too long, but there was plenty to the story. This means it was a bit straight to the point without a lot of extra, wasted dialogue. In my book, that is a good thing. I was certainly read to get to the action of the trials, but I also understand the need for a solid backstory with character development. I don’t think I found myself bored, but a part of me was yearning for something completely shocking like her brother actually being alive. Maybe that is still to come… Freckles for sure was my favorite character. I enjoyed the dynamic he brought to the group. He was extremely useful in many ways, but also seemed like the jittery one who probably won’t make it through the trials. What can I say, I am rooting for the unexpected, the underdog. I think I was held in the most suspense at the end when Wild was faced with the truth being exposed to everyone. This book is certainly a cliff-hanger and I am ready to dive into the next book to find out what is going to happen to her. I want so badly for her to find her brother alive and to kick ass, maybe even bring down the entire system. I also look forward to learning more about the academy itself and their purpose. What is lurking out there in the dark, besides vampires? This book is a bit of a cross between Harry Potter and Hunger Games, just like the Amazon description states from one review (building relationships, learning on the go, and not really knowing what in the world is out to get you). I love that is book can appeal to a young audience, but more than anything I am excited to see the next two books unfold into a world with dynamic characters and I am certain sinister people or institutions.
If you haven’t started reading this fun new academy series, do so now!
I builds very rapidly from girl leaves home to world shattering intrigue. The plot is plausible if a bit of a steep curve. I enjoyed the book but I am hoping for a little more back story to clear up what appears to be a group of novice students taking the front lines in a fate of the world situation.
I really enjoyed this series, it was fun and entertaining!
Awesome read!
