They might have a second chance together… just as reckless, beautiful, and angry with him as he remembers.
Chantal would rather be anywhere than in the freezing wilderness with Tanner. Seven years isn’t long enough to forget the way his lips taste, or how much he hates her. But there’s no denying the effectiveness of their combined abilities or that accepting this assignment is the price she’s paying for being bailed out of trouble once again.
Unlocking the mysteries of the artifact leads to a dangerous treasure hunt with a telepathic killer hot on their heels. Forced to trust each other, old wounds open and they face the attraction that never quite died. Soon their mission turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse that tests the limits of their survival training—and their hearts.

This is the 2nd book I’ve read written by Lark Brennan; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

This third novel in the Durand Chronicles involves Protector (good guys) cousin Chantel Durand, and her fellow operative Tanner Hays. These two have some tough history, and the hurt between them runs deep. Now, with each carrying recent baggage from assignment-related traumas, they’re ordered to work together once again. Their combined psychic skills are best suited for searching out and obtaining a mysterious and powerful artifact that has resurfaced on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana.
Although the power of the artifact is unknown, Chantel and Tanner know someone with dark magik is stalking them as they search for it. Trekking through the wilderness with temperatures dropping and a blizzard due to hit within the next few hours, these two must put aside their personal feelings and behave professionally, or it could cost them their lives. But not so easy to put aside is the sexual attraction that has always been between them.
This fast-paced story never slows for a moment. The mystery is well-developed and smart, the suspense eerie, and the romantic relationship between the two crackling hot and deep. And a story hook? OMG! I can’t wait for the next installment. I’m loving this entire series!
Shadows of the Past is a reissue of Recklessly Yours, the third in Lark Brennan’s Durand Chronicles series, and finishing it kept me up until 2 o’clock one morning (and I had to go fetch the charging cable and plug my Kindle in for the last half hour). The series might best be described as paranormal romantic suspense, although the characters are all human and the paranormal elements are all psychic. This entry involves a decidedly non-Indian artifact found on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana and two Durand Protectors (who haven’t spoken in seven years) sent to investigate and retrieve it.
Chantal Durand has been working as an archaeologist in Australia (where she was briefly jailed for shooting an ex-lover in the butt), but she’s called back to her Protector duties when a mysterious artifact turns up in Montana. Her psychic abilities are just what’s needed to find a clue to the origin and meaning of the strange piece of tile. As if landing in the frozen north without the proper wardrobe wasn’t trouble enough, she finds herself working with Tanner Hays, the last partner she wants. The last time they worked together, Tanner’s best friend was killed, and he still blames Chantal for that disaster. The search for the more powerful artifact connected to the tile leads to suspense and more than a few plot twists as Chantal and Tanner make their way through dangerous blizzards and even more dangerous opponents equally determined to find the missing treasure.
