This was a fantastic and fast-paced read, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel!
I enjoyed this introductory story. I wish more time had been spent fleshing out the lead character. I suppose that’s what the series will do. Good pace and action scenes. Easy to read and follow. I’ll be looking to explore this series.
Louie Thorne seeks revenge for people who killed her parents. She has a gift that lets her “slip” through water and shadows to other locations. Well written, unique story line that I enjoyed very much.
Shadows in the Water – a review by Rosemary Kenny.
Kory M Shrum is Mistress of Dark Supernatural Suspense and well earns that title with the opener for her Lou Thorne Thriller series, Shadows in the Water.
Just when you thought it was safe (after Jaws and Psycho had been ‘put away’), to go back in the water, we learn of Louie ‘Lou’ Thorne’s sudden fear of the element and her Mom Courtney’s impatience with her, that culminates in Lou’s complete disappearance for months, before being found injured and naked on the side of the road by a stranger.
Her father Jack, a police officer, isn’t as shocked as his wife by these events – why not?
When her parents are attacked by a Mafia assassin, how does Jack save Lou?
Where does Lou learn about her newfound supernatural connection and abilities?
Who is Jabbers? How does Lou meet Konstantin?
You’ve literally never read anything as exciting, terrifying, twisted and strangely romantic (over 18s only), a story before, until you’ve read this outstanding paranormal thriller, Shadows in the Water, by Kory M Shrum…thankfully there are more books available in this amazing series.

What a great book. Love it
Here is an imaginitive story about a young lady with a power that can easily be negated by simply turning on the light. Her enemies just can’t figure that out though. Long ago her ability manifested itself in the water. She survived that and the next our author, Kory M. Shrum, tells us is about her father wanting to send her to live with her aunt. He is explaining the details when the mob breaks in to kill him. Her father throws her in the pool to save her life. You need to read the details of how she came to work with a retired policeman to catch the real killer.
I put this as safe for most adolescence, there is sexual inunendo (girl on girl) and violence well described.
Shadows in the Water
(Shadows in the Water #1)
by Kory M. Shrum
A gal named Lou, as a young girl, has a fear of water. One day her mom leaves her in the bathtub to check the food bubbling on the stove. The girl disappears! She is found months later when someone is mowing their grass near their pool. She is sliced up, standing by the pool, and has deep gouge marks in her flesh.
Her father realizes that his sister was like this but he thought she was attention seeking and never believed her. Now he does. He plans to send the now 12 year old Lou to her aunt for the summer to learn to control it. But drug cartel members raid the place and kill her mom and dad. Her dad saved her by throwing her into the pool.
She is grown now and has learned all kinds of things, like multiple martial arts, shooting, and using this gift. She can use even darkness to disappear/travel. She knows where the creature that attacked her lives and she takes it drug dealers!
This is so good! Lots of great revenge, fantastic fantasy, creatures, characters, suspense and I enjoyed cheering for this serial killer!
Lou is definitely an anti-hero. She is tough and haunted by her past. I liked her perspective, the way she saw the world and disposed of the bad guys. There are a lot of bad guys in her world. Nothing soft about her. Cant wait to read on in the series.
A blow-you-away kind of book from the first page!
A powerful book. A young girl survives the slaughter of her family, hidden away she developes the skills needed for revenge. At 17 she starts out her campaign, will her aunt and a friend of her father be able to bring her back to ordinary life?
This was a fast paced action adventure with a unique supernatural twist. I am a man who likes strong and capable women and this really fits. The author did NOT fill chapters with rampant pornography as so many do or kill off important characters to depress the reader. I wish they would offer a discounted price on the series, I would buy the set!!!
I didn’t want this story to end, and will have to get the rest of the series. Louie and King are great characters, and the premise is unique.
Totally unexpected and well done!
I enjoyed it. Was different.
THE BEST OUT OF 5 BOOKS THUS FAR.
Lou is still injured from a shot that just crazed her but the wound does not seem to heal ,not fast like it usually does.
This makes it hard to do the jobs that need to be done but with help from Piper and others she manages.
She gets an offer to do jobs with finance, extra hands and information to get rid of the bad people out thereby using her special powers she has.
But will she go to far or manage to stop in time read on and you will find out.
This book is exciting ,full of great characters and a book not to be missed.
Though extremely farfetched, Shadows in The Water is an interesting read with good characters. This paranormal thriller is fast-paced with non-stop action.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. Can’t wait to read the next one! It’s like a fairytale for grownups.
An unexpected pleasure. Amazing and original story with flesh and blood characters.
We start with Louie, daughter of Jack Thorne, at a young age, afraid of the water. She has an otherworldly experience when, at age 10, she “slips” beneath the water in her bathtub. Gone four days, she suddenly reappears 60 miles away, bitten, lacerated and bleeding. Her father and mother are brutally murdered, her father’s name disgraced. 14 years later, Lou is a lethal hunter of gangsters, a killing machine, who can somehow transport herself from ‘here’ to ‘there’. A great advantage for a vigilante! Robert King, ex-DEA agent, is tasked by Lucy, Louie’s aunt and his ex-lover, to train Lou, to divert her from her judge, jury and executioner lifestyle. Then we meet Konstantine, a member of the Ravengers gang, suddenly promoted to leader. Taking his father’s name, Martinelli, becomes the last Martinelli. The Martinelli clan is Lou’s favorite target: she blames them for killing her father and mother. The story proceeds to the resolution of why her father and mother were killed, and by whom. The action gets pretty intense and violent; there is lots of bloodshed and lives lost, secrets discovered and misperceptions clarified.
I thought it was a good read. However, I thought (maybe my fault) that the book was in the “thriller” category. It is partly that, but there’s also a large supernatural aspect to it that first confused, then disappointed me. So if you’re into supernatural, go for it, but if you want a plain old thriller, I’d pass.
