In the new novel in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series, Lt. Eve Dallas is about to walk into the shadows of her husband’s dangerous past… While Eve examines a fresh body in Washington Square Park, her husband, Roarke, spots a man among the onlookers he’s known since his younger days on the streets of Dublin. A man who claims to be his half brother. A man who kills for a living–and who … kills for a living–and who burns with hatred for him.
Eve is quick to suspect that the victim’s spouse–resentful over his wife’s affair and poised to inherit her fortune–would have happily paid an assassin to do his dirty work. Roarke is just as quick to warn her that if Lorcan Cobbe is the hitman, she needs to be careful. Law enforcement agencies worldwide have pursued this cold-hearted killer for years, to no avail. And his lazy smirk when he looked Roarke’s way indicates that he will target anyone who matters to Roarke…and is confident he’ll get away with it.
Eve is desperate to protect Roarke. Roarke is desperate to protect Eve. And together, they’re determined to find Cobbe before he finds them–even if it takes them across the Atlantic, far outside Eve’s usual jurisdiction…

Eve Dallas is tasked with the challenging role of protecting her city and her beloved Roarke from a stone-cold killer from his past. When Lorcan Cobbe comes to NYC to do a contract kill on a young mother, he doesn’t know that he has entered the world of tenacious detective lieutenant Eve Dallas and her team. The action was fast, the expletives what are usually used in these books and the characters the regular team that Eve always uses, with the addition of Abernathy from Interpol. I enjoyed the book and think that fans of J.D. Robb’s “In Death” series will also enjoy it, with the spotlight on Roarke and the couple in constant danger. I especially enjoyed the repartee between Eve and Summerset as his life was endangered as well. Fans will learn a lot more about Roarke’s background in this latest book in the series.

I checked out a copy of this book from the local library on the Overdrive App. I was not required to write a positive review.
As usual with the In Death books by J.D. Robb I don’t think I so much as “read” it. I inhaled it!!! I have read each of the In Death series, have each book, they never fail to entertain! I look forward to each, every one of them coming out as know it will be a great read. Just love Eve, Rourke, their stories, each, every one of the characters. You really don’t just read these – you become a part of the story of each, every character! Can’t wait for the next one to come out.
Nora Roberts is marvelous – J.D. Robb is, perhaps, the best of her work.
This is one of the best Eve Dallas stories I’ve read, and I’ve read and listened to a lot of them. Roark really a has great part in this story and it is refreshing. I know he is in all of them but this time he has a major role. We get to read or hear more about his past life in detail.
The blurb tells about the story…no sense in me repeating that, just know if your an Eve Dallas and Roark fan this story is for you.
I like the whole series but especially books that give insight into the “young” Eve and Roarke….
I’m not sure who actually wrote this because this is the first time in the 51 Eve Dallas books that a dog and cat were tortured and killed. I have read all the books, in order. If this had been the first one I read, I would have rated it 1 star and stopped reading. As is, I had to skip several parts of this novel. I certainly hope this isn’t going to be a path continued in future Eve Dallas books – if so, I have read my last. Please take note, JD Robb, aka Nora Roberts.
Shadows in Death is book 51 in the ‘In Death’ series by the fabulous J.D. Robb (AKA Nora Roberts). This time we follow Lieutenant Eve as she tries to catch a killer from her husband Roarke’s shady past. The story begins with a woman being murdered in a local park and although neither Eve or Roarke know the woman, Roarke sees someone from his past in the crowd and knows that they are the killer and are going to come for him and his family next.
As with previous books in this series, the story is fast paced and we see the usual characters turning up to help Eve and Roarke. Eve is her usual snarky self, but we do see moments of vulnerability from her, especially when it comes to Roarke and how he is dealing with this person from his past and what memories that brings up. I actually loved that we got to see a little bit more from Roarke, his family from Ireland and how he not only handled the killer but having his fingers in so many pies.
I love this series! They are great reads, with some action, fun and a little bit of drama. They are a must read for those that don’t really want to overanalyze everything that’s going on in a book and simply want to enjoy it!

Nora Roberts always writes a decent book. Her later ones are not nearly as good as her early and mid ones, but still a decent read. Especially if you have been following the series.
Always like J.D. Robb. Not a book with a lot of fluff and that is just what I want to pass the time while confined indoors these days.
Like the rest of this series, this book was well-plotted. It’s set in the 2060s, if I remember correctly, and one of the protagonists regularly travels to other planets to do business. The main protagonist, a female police officer, is married to the businessman, Their love scenes are somewhat steamy, but once you’ve read the first dozen or so books, those interludes can become rather repetitive. But they’re always a good mystery.
OMG! One of the best in the entire series so far and that’s saying something. Thanks J. D. Robb!
Great series!
I have read every book in the Eve Dallas series and this is by far one of my favorites. Loved the way they brought Rourke’s past into the future and how they faced the threats to those they love together. Can’t wait for the next JD Robb book in this series
I love all the ‘in Death’ books, but this one is my favorite. I love the camaraderie shown in this story between the ex-criminal and the entire police force. What a great story!
Yay! J D Robb is back. This was a great story with Roark and Eve It takes place in NYC per usual but goes to Ireland which I love. The twist and turns are believable and the story moves in several directions which leaves Eve at the top of her game and Roark by her side, Love this series…
Super realistic characters with exceptional dialog and scene building. Entertaining yet fabulous murder mystery with both romance and shocking twists and turns.
Loved it!
I am a huge J.D. Robb fan. I love everyone of her “In Death” series. I’ve read all of them multiple times. They are always fresh and great reads. Keep them coming!!
One of the best books in this series! Absolutely must-read!
Great story pitting Roarke & Eve against Roarke’s childhood nemesis. It really added depth to Roarke’s character by getting a look into his wretched childhood, how he overcame it, and the emotional scars he still carries. Also enjoyed revisiting Roarke’s Irish family.
