In the new novel in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series, Lt. Eve Dallas is about to walk into the shadows of her husband’s dangerous past… While Eve examines a fresh body in Washington Square Park, her husband, Roarke, spots a man among the onlookers he’s known since his younger days on the streets of Dublin. A man who claims to be his half brother. A man who kills for a living–and who … kills for a living–and who burns with hatred for him.
Eve is quick to suspect that the victim’s spouse–resentful over his wife’s affair and poised to inherit her fortune–would have happily paid an assassin to do his dirty work. Roarke is just as quick to warn her that if Lorcan Cobbe is the hitman, she needs to be careful. Law enforcement agencies worldwide have pursued this cold-hearted killer for years, to no avail. And his lazy smirk when he looked Roarke’s way indicates that he will target anyone who matters to Roarke…and is confident he’ll get away with it.
Eve is desperate to protect Roarke. Roarke is desperate to protect Eve. And together, they’re determined to find Cobbe before he finds them–even if it takes them across the Atlantic, far outside Eve’s usual jurisdiction…

I love all the Eve Dallas books!!! She is sooo dedicated to justice and always gets the villain.
Love all of the books featuring Dallas and her billionaire husband.
Always a Robb fan. I ‘v read them all.
Awesome book. Awesome writer. Love all her books.
I have read every one of her books and just love the In Death series.
As Mavis would say, “This was Mag!” “Shadows in Death” took me back to when I started reading this series in 2007. This story had EVERYTHING! The ending was especially brilliant. “Shadows” reminded me so much of the earlier books. I had the audio version. As usual, Susan Ericksen was unmatched in her narration, and I have to mention her scene with “Mr. Bilbo”. That is absolutely not a spoiler but; for those who listen, I think you’ll enjoy that part as much as I did. Like I said, “Mag!”.
I have read this whole series multiple times and this one is my favorite! I will have to read this one again before I return it to the library. This book gives so much MORE! More of Roarke’s mysterious past. More of the Eve word play. More emotion than I’ve read in this series so far. This so good! Yes this a long series, but these can easily be read as standalones. I would personally recommend reading from book one because these characters build a connection that strengthens with each case in each story.
I love this series so much and I’ve read most of them at least twice, but lately I’m really noticing the relationships between the extra characters are seriously lacking or missing altogether. Where is the snarky and sassy McNab and Peabody relationship, and where are Charles and Louise?
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is the best murder cop in NY. Her newest case is more unusual because her husband knows immediately who the killer is. Now a world wide contract killer that has evaded the authorities for twenty years, and known to have killed well over four hundred people, is on the loose in New York City.
When a night at the theater is cut short because of murder Roarke will see his old Dublin nemeses in the crowd and he knows the man won’t be leaving after this hit. Cobbe’s obsession with Roarke won’t allow him to leave until Roarke is dead, but he will see those Roarke loves suffer first.
It will take a great deal of trust on both the parts of Dallas and Roarke to stay safe while a killer is determined to strike at them both. But they will work together with the entire NYPSD along with many associates and friends to bring a notorious killer to justice and Roarke will finally see just how big his ‘family’ has grown to include so many. But will they succeed before Cobbe strikes again?
As always, JD Robb delivers a page Turner. I eagerly await all her new releases
JD Robb is always a must read
Love the series.
A definite thumbs up for having a different story line this time. I also liked how the cops came together for one of their own and how a couple relish the chance to finally get their bad guy. We get to experience more of Eve’s second family, plus get more of her nuclear family and why they’re together. However, after getting to book 21, I’m tired of Eve always knowing straight off the bat who the bad guy is.
Because Eve knows, the police procedural aspect (helped greatly by Roarke as usual) was boring. It seems to primarily be here to introduce another character who features in the remaining 2/3 of the book. Maybe if there was more one on one or two on one with that character the book would have been more exciting. It’s basically one long chase.
At least this one was interesting enough to finish (I gave up on 49). I will undoubtedly continue to read the series (or at least start the future books).
This may be my most favorite In Death to date. It shows so much more of Roarke than we have seen before. Eve also is brilliant in this story, so much more aggressive, but still the tender side is there. I can not wait for the next book.
Already I’m yearning for the next “In Death” book. Not doing a synopsis on this tale. Just buy the book! I love these characters and I want to be part of Dallas’ and Roarkes family and friends. Robb/Roberts is magic, plain and simple. Can’t wait to read the next installment.
Roarke and Eve walks onto a crime scene and Roarke’s past bites him in the butt. Robb has out done herself with this story. Its been awhile since we had a Roarke story and this one is the best to date. It shows a new side of Roarke and Eve that we haven’t seen before. Not only do they work together to catch a killer, Eve’s entire squad join the hunt, along with Feeney and the commander. You will not be disappointed with this story, the banter between Eve and Summerset will make you laugh out loud. So classic of Eve and Summerset , to band together to protect Roarke. As Eve is forced to play nice with Interpol.
Absolutely loved it! It’s a bit different from other books in that it’s heavily focused on the investigation and the ins and outs of cop work. Not that it makes it boring, far from it. The intricacies of gathering information and tying things together is thrilling for those of us that are mystery lovers. Plus, it’s just more realistic that not every case results in Eve nearly getting killed or sustaining some grievous bodily injury.
I really enjoyed the Roarke-centric nature of the story. I always enjoy his parts in investigations. Here we get more information on his early years. We also get to see the deep impact he has made on those he work with when he works with Eve and I really loved that part of it. The way he acknowledges Eve’s skill and determination as an investigator is lovely too. Yes, she get a lot of help and advantage from Roarke’s skills and his connections but at the base of everything is her skill and her cop brain and instinct.
Other than a brief scene with Nadine, one with Dennis, and one with Caro this book completely focuses on Eve and her cops which is also different and very appreciated. I like all these characters that have been built up over the course of over 50 books and it’s nice to spend time with them and see how invested they are in their LT and in Roarke.
Loved it and highly recommend.
Dallas and Rourke are enjoying a night at the theater when she gets a call that there’s been a murder at the arch in Washington Square Park. A young woman has been killed by a knife-wielding man. When they arrive on the scene, Rourke recognizes one of the people in the crowd of looky-loos – a man from Rourke’s childhood. The man with whom Rourke has a history – none of it good. Rourke knows him to a cold-blooded murderer who enjoys the killing. If he’s in town then both he and Dallas are in serious danger. What Rourke doesn’t know is why the man is in New York City when his hunting grounds have been Europe.
In this outing, Robb has kept her long-running series alive and well after 50 books. She ably builds the book’s tension slowly but surely while leaving the reading turning pages into the very early hours of morning. Robb has a talent for keeping her characters consistent from book to book, so her readers feel like they are meeting up with old friends once again.
If you’ve never read one of Robb’s first 50 books, this book will captivate you from page one to the end. You need not have read any of the other books in this series to thoroughly enjoy this one. If you do start the series here, be prepared to want to know more about all the characters from Dallas and Rourke to Peabody and Mira.
If you’ve read the first 50 books, you’re going to love this book. None of the characters who have been staples throughout the years are missing here. This book needs to be near or at the top of your to-be-read list.
My thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Edelweiss for an eARC.
Copy received via Hachette Australia for an honest review
If you had told me 25 years/50 books ago that I would be loving book 51 in a series as much as I loved book 1, I would have laughed at you.
So many series I have read have fallen away as the number of books in the series has risen, however to me that is definitely not the case with the In Death series.
I am as eager for book 51 as I was picking up book 1.
JD Robb/Nora Roberts had me at the first “Darling Eve”. Sigh… oh Roarke how I love you.
This installment went a little different to normal – the main murder is solved quite quickly, and we are left on the trail of someone from Roarke’s past who has come to the present day to cause trouble.
It was great delving more into events from the enigmatic Roarke’s past. I adore the way Roarke and his Eve work together, and this time I felt there was a lot more emotion between them, the worry they have for each other, the love they have for each other.
It was also great the way Eve and Roarke’s worlds work together. It was like we got to see a bit of everybody at the precinct working together.
And I love the way Eve and Summerset’s relationship has grown to where it is now.
Gah, I just love everything about this book.
Now I need to go find a Roarke of my own, as I am sure Dallas won’t give up hers.
I can’t wait for book 52!
