From New York Times Bestselling Author, Kristen Proby, comes an all new paranormal romance set in the mystical city of New Orleans… way to stay sane. Everything changes the day Cassian Winslow joins my ghost walking tour and knocks my world off its axis with green eyes the color of the stone around my neck.
An unspeakable evil is loose in New Orleans, taking young women and leaving a bloodbath in his wake. More shadows lurking for me. More unhappy dead. There might be a way to stop it.
Open myself up to Cassian.
If I do, it could spell his death.
But if I don’t, it’s mine.

If you’ve been waiting for Kristen Proby to dip her talented toes into the PNR water, your wait is over. Enjoy this first installment of her new, incredibly different and wildly original series.
Where to start? First of all WOW! I am not normally a paranormal reader but Kristen had me hooked from page one! If you liked Easy Magic then add a sick twist and you will love Shadows. Great job for your first paranormal Kristen!
I normally avoid paranormal books like the plague, but the eerie premise of “Shadows” intrigued me enough to give it a try. Wow, am I glad I did! The gripping prologue of this spine tingling story was the most intensely creepy, page-turning start to a book I’ve read in a long time. The city of New Orleans & the bayou are the perfect haunted setting for the spellbinding and often gruesome tale of murder, love & magic. This darkly thrilling read is ideal for Halloween, but be warned- it’s not for the faint of heart.
I’m so excited by this release!!! I’ve been craving a paranormal romance, and I love New Orleans! I can’t wait to see what Kristen Proby has in store!

Oh, how I love a good ghost story, and with a touch of romance, too! And, that’s what I got when I read Shadows ! From the prologue to the epilogue, the intensity was consistently increasing with every turn of the page. Shadows gave me a Ghost Whisperer -esque feel to it. Love that TV series, by the way. Not just that, it also gave me a True Blood -ish or The Originals -ish, too. Well, the seasons with all those witches, but without all those other supernaturals. Anyways, Kristen Proby’s descriptive world-building and well-developed characters allowed me to “picture” it in my head, almost “whisking” me away to “walk” with these characters. This is such a twisted ghost story with a touch of romance …. AND, I LOVED IT!
Shadows is definitely perfect for the Halloween season! With the elements of suspense, horror, and mystery, this story kept me at the “edge of my seat” and with bated breath that got me getting chills and goosebumps. I also liked that the quick romance was subtle, yet, very present. What a crazy and scary whirlwind love affair this was! The romance was sweet and heartwarming. There were moments that got me teary-eyed, too! Yup!
But…. That epilogue!?!? Wow! That so got me holding my breath! I think I did stop breathing when I read that last sentence… Haha! There better be another book coming… Shadows ended with “unfinished business.” Now, my heart is racing with anticipation and anxiety. What could that ending mean… to these characters!?! Need the next book to find out!!!
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
This is the beginning of a new series.
We are introduced to three sisters: Brielle, Millie and Daphne.
This book is more towards Brielle.
However, Millie and Daphne also play major parts in this books.
Brielle is able to see the ghosts on the French Quarter.
Her job is to give ghosts tours.
In one of the ghost tours, she meets Cassian.
The mutual attraction is instantaneous.
But there is danger lurking in the French Quarters.
What will happen when danger comes for them ?
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Paranormal Romance…from my girl Kristen Proby? Yes please. This promises to be the start of something yummy. Don’t miss it!
As a big fan of PNR, I was so excited for Shadows to release and I wasn’t disappointed! Perfect Halloween read!
Amazing first foray into paranormal from Kristen Proby!
Shadows is the first book in the Bayou Magic series by the very-talented, Kristen Proby. I love me some Proby books! This is her first paranormal book and she did a fabulous job.if you read her Boudreaux series then you will be in for an extra treat since there are some cameos. She touched on some paranormal with Easy Magic which was a fun treat so I was excited she was delving into it even more. I don’t want to spoil anything since it has added suspense!
Three sisters. One tourist. One killer in the French Quarter.
One day Brielle was doing her walking ghost tour in the Quarter and that night she was being followed. It was nothing new to her when she saw shadows of the dead around the city but it was another when they followed her home. On the same day she met a man with the green eyes that matched the pendent she wore every day. There was something about him. Like he was an old friend or someone she needed in her life. She had no idea how much that day would change her future.
Someone was out there. Lurking. Taking girls from the Bayou and having their twisted way with them.
That’s all I can say about the story. I will say that I was addicted from the beginning until the very end. I love creepy, dark, and twisted. Maybe it’s because I am a Halloween baby. It’s definitely darker than any other Proby story. She can write anything, really. I love the characters. The writing. It was the perfect blend of humor, darkness, witchiness, and romance. I can’t wait for the next book!!
Quotes:
“I told you the other night, I’m a complicated woman. I wasn’t kidding.”
“I suppose we’re all complicated, in our own ways. You haven’t scared me off.”
“Yet,” she whispers.
“I like you.” “I feel like I was just given a test that I didn’t prepare for.”
“You were,” Millie confirms. “You passed. Now,”—she turns to me again—“talk to me.”
“I don’t know where you got this chair, but I like it. Whoever owned it was happy and quite playful.”
“Well, that’s fun,” Millie says, grinning. “You should re-christen it later. After we leave.”
“Thanks for the pointer,” I say with a laugh.
“It’s not a bad idea,” Cash says, making me grin.
“Focus, please.”
New paranormal series from Kristen Proby! So exciting!
I’m so excited Kristen Proby has taken to writing paranormal romance!!! Love it!
The cover drew me in first, then seeing Kristen’s name on it made one clicking a no brainer. This book is a haunting paranormal romance and I am IN LOVE! Dive in, you’re going to devour it and beg for more!
Kristen Proby does it AGAIN with Shadows! Is there anything this woman cannot write? I don’t think so! SO highly recommended!
I’m a big PNR fan, this was quite a different take on that type, really it’s more of a supernatural / horror / mystery / thriller read than anything else, but it had a good story line which I enjoyed and am really looking forward to the next book.
The book is based around 3 sisters, each of which has a different supernatural power – one sees ghosts as shadows, one is a witch and one can see the past of an object by its touch. The story is set in New Orleans and is spooky and chilling in places. I loved the connection between the three sisters and how they worked their powers between them.
Brielle runs a walking ghost tour through the city, she sees shadows everywhere in this city, but they tend not to bother her, she takes the same route all the time knowing the safest places to go to avoid them. Cash is an FBI agent on leave and ends up on her tour, instantly attracted to her he finds himself unable to leave her alone. When a new shadow appears to Brielle she knows there is something seriously wrong, as it is that of a girl recently on her tour. The three sisters and Cash end up helping the police help hunt down a serial killer using their powers.
Don’t be reading this expecting a romance, it’s not that type of book, there is some between Cash and Brielle, but not much.
A good read for the Halloween season, there are some violent and gory scenes in this as we see the killer doing some vile and disgusting acts on his victims.
Looking forward to what book 2 brings in this series.
I had no idea what to expect going into this book. Having not read many PNR style books I was slightly apprehensive. But I needn’t have worried, this book is absolutely amazing!
Shadows is the first book in the new Bayou Magic series, a spin off from Kirsten’s bestselling Boudreaux series, set in New Orleans. This series is a little different though, as it centres around the more spiritual side of the Big Easy!
In Shadows, we follow Brielle, the oldest of 3 sisters, all with some sort of psychic or magical power.
This isn’t your typical romance novel, this is darker, more suspenseful and has you on the edge of your seat until the very end!
Brielle meets Cash when she’s working one evening, and after a few coincidental meetings and an extremely powerful instantaneous connection they embark on intense relationship, all the while trying to help the local police crack a huge case!!!
But sinister things are lurking around every corner, with no telling when they might appear. This book will make your toes curl one minute then have the hairs on the back of your neck stand up the next!!!
This books was enthralling from the off, I was intrigued by the sisters story, especially after reading the prologue and couldn’t wait to find out all about them! Shadows has a bit of everything, being a huge fan of crime/thriller novels as well as romance, this book was a fantastic combination of my favourite genres!
Kristen absolutely nailed this more spooky side to her words, and I’m already excited for book two!!!!
5 stars
Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love paranormal/love stories and Shadows is a good start for Kristen Proby to delve into this genre. The setting is perfect (New Orleans of course!) and the characters are well crafted. It has all the trademarks of a good KP book: humor, romance, snappy dialogues, and interesting and fitting locations. It wasn’t as spooky as some of Nora Roberts’ stories but I look forward to the next books in the series. Great potential and I believe the more Kristen writes in this genre, the better it will get.
Shadows by Kristen Proby, has bit darker storyline and combines the paranormal genre with an epic romance storyline that Kristen is known to deliver. This new series is an extension of Kristen’s Easy Magic novel in the Boudreaux series, but set around three psychic sisters, Brielle, Millie and Daphne, each having different psychic gifts that grew up on a plantation in the bayou in Louisiana.
Shadows is centered around Brielle, a thirty year old woman that can see shadows of dead people and works as a historic tour guide in the French Quarter of New Orleans. During a tour, Brielle meets Cassien (Cash), an FBI profiler that is currently on leave from his job after a long exhausting case. When new shadows start following Brielle around the city, with the help of Cash’s experience, her sisters and beloved characters from a past Bourdreaux novel, they work together to figure out exactly what is occuring in the very haunted city.
Shadows was a quick read and really kept my interest throughout the book. While I have enjoyed paranormal books in the past, I don’t read them as often as books in the romance genre. Proby did a great job bringing the two genres together and writing a novel that will appeal to readers of both romance and paranormal genres. I loved that the book was full of suspense and had me guessing until the final chapter.
Shadows does have a little cliffhanger, but Proby always does an amazing job bringing back loved characters and merging them with new characters to make one big happy family.
This was such a different story for Kristen, but so good.
I love how even though Cash may not understand everything, he believes in Brielle. They have a great love story ahead of them. So excited to see Millie and Daphne get their magic on.
Creepy and Spooky! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s Read
Shadows was a book so far out of my comfort zone. I don’t do scary, spooky… I’m a total wussy! Set in beautiful New Orleans, this story weaves magic and ghosts into a tale that was out of this word. I loved it and was creeped out at the same time.
Totally worth the read!!
