4.5 Stars
A paranormal romance from Kristen Proby!!!
I loved so many things about this book. This was truly a dark paranormal at it’s best. The characters were amazing and I loved that the story was unique and kept me intrigued from start to finish. And oh boy, that finish? I can’t believe the author left us like that…I need the second book now! If you are in the mood for a great read check out Shadows and let Kristen Proby take you down to the Bayou in a book you don’t want to miss!
Holy moly, what did I just read?! If you’re like me and essentially afraid of everything, DO. NOT. READ. THIS. AT. NIGHT!
I have to say, when an author decides to write in a different genre and absolute nails it, you can’t help but just rave about it. Kristen Proby absolutely killed it with her first paranormal. And YES, it is 100% a paranormal and I was just not prepared for it.
The romance lover in me will always beg for more, it was a little low in Shadows, but it was completely fitting. And to be honest, if Kristen decided throw in the steamy scenes and then BAM, creepy-spooky scenes. Talk about 180!
Between the setting and the amazing characters, it’s easy to get lost in New Orleans among the many unanswered questions we have about the mysteries of this place. I’ve never been to New Orleans, but there’s always a draw when it comes anything paranormal.
I wasn’t quite hooked on the relationship between Brielle and Cash, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this story as a whole. I’m so excited for this series! Since Brielle is one of three sisters, I can’t wait to learn more about their powers and see where their journey takes us.
**I RECEIVED A COMPLIMENTARY READER’S COPY FROM SOCIAL BUTTERFLY PR FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. THIS DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR CONTENT OF MY REVIEW**
Kristen Proby does paranormal! I’m so excited! Shadows is the first in a new trilogy! Clickity-click!
5 ‘Soul Recognition’ Stars
Ohhhh, myyyy, gooooddddd!!! Kristen Proby has the most exciting and goosebump inspiring of reads within SHADOWS! KP’s very first full on PNR – though one of my fav of hers, Easy Magic, already had plenty of supernatural going on – is a mind gripping, heart palpitating paranormal masterpiece!
This is the first of a brand new series focused on three witch sisters and this Practical Magic hardcore fan is hooked! The chill inducing take on the serial killer thriller, the suspense, the sisterhood, and the ROMANCE… We have it ALL!!!
Shadows, as the name itself suggests is very focused on the paranormal, mainly in this case, on the dead’s shadows that Brielle alone can see, her gift. Not only was the book fantastic and intricately crafted in this ‘witchy’ universe, but also the interconnection with the serial killer – specially his POV – which was so beautifully executed that more than once gave me literally the CHILLS. That’s is proof on how masterfully it’s written.
The love story, oh my, talk about catnip! There are very little things I adore more in my romance than a fated mated /soulmate type of love story, and Cash and Brielle’s meeting and insta feel of connection fit that to a T. Not only that, but thanks to Ms. Proby ‘s usual and fantastic craft, even with this insta parameter, it was just so relatable and believable! I not only read, but FELT their soul deep connection, and it’s blossoming into love.
The suspense, the intrigue, the fear and the pain were so perfectly blended with Kristen Proby’s brand of humor, partnership, love and sexiness that we just dive in into this world, and we never want to emerge back. The mystery and the occult were a joy to unveil, the sister’s relationship and hints of the future couple, enticing to say the least, but the love story… WOW… Never once did I forget I was reading a romance, when Cash and Brielle were on page, their chemistry was palpable, and their love and devotion #RelationshipGoals! Awwww, and insanely did I mention that?!
Saying I devoured this book is an understatement, because I not only greedily consumed every word, I savored them, and absorbed them into my heart. Shadows was all I hoped for and so much, MUCH more! I was already deeply hooked to Ms. Proby’s masterful contemporary romance, but adding to that my love for PNR, it’s a no brainer that Shadows is now one of my all time fav PNR, and I’m already counting down the days until we get the other two witch sisters, Millie and Daphne, specially after that teasing ending and this book is proof that. Need them stat!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Favorite Quotes:
“It’s a hell of a first date,” Millie mumbles. “I mean, most people just get naked and have sex and then regret their life choices in the morning. This is on a whole different level.” I smirk and then shrug. “The night’s not over yet.”
“For you,” she says to Cash, passing him a coffee. “There’s a protection spell in there.” “Does it have eye of newt?” he asks, flashing a smile. “Not this time,” Millie replies with a wink, making Cash’s smile slide from his face.
My Review:
I’m not much of a paranormal reader but I’ve recently discovered this smooth and talented wordsmith named Kristen Proby and thought I’d give it a perusal. Somewhere on page one, her cunning word voodoo sucked me right into her character’s vortex while her strong and crafty juju held me enthralled. I was spellbound by her well-crafted and shrewdly plotted tale.
The engaging storylines and writing were absorbing and swirling with atmosphere and cast with oddly intriguing characters. I couldn’t put my Kindle down despite the chilling and gruesome nature of the crimes depicted. It was spine-tingling. I am definitely hooked and while I may not be much of a paranormal reader, I certainly seem to be one when Kristen Proby throws it down.
The Landry sisters of New Orleans have been surrounded by the extraordinary for as long as they can remember. Each has a deep knowledge of and firm grasp on the gifts that they’ve inherited, and are happy to share them with others. When Brielle, the oldest sister, begins to see things, see spirits, that shouldn’t be anywhere nearby, she and her sisters, along with one very hunky and helpful FBI profiler and a plethora of magic makers, begin the quest to find out what, or who, is making trouble in their town.
Sometimes authors step outside of their usual genre, and, well, things just don’t work out. And, other times, an author will write something completely different from their norm, and, magic. SHADOWS by Kristen Proby falls squarely into the second camp. Spooky, creepy, and filled with paranormal activity, SHADOWS is a fantastic start to a series that I just know that I am going to love.
Brielle, Millie, and Daphne are a welcome addition to the world of paranormal romance, and I adore that Kristen has tied these books into the world of her Boudreaux series. And, while I wouldn’t say that SHADOWS ends on a cliffhanger, there is most definitely more to this saga, as each sister gets her story and the larger picture unfolds, and I cannot wait to see where things go. Absolutely five stars for SHADOWS and the folks of the Bayou Magic series. You’re going to love this world, I guarantee.
Just in time for Halloween, Kristen scares and makes us swoon!
Paranormal romance with a twist.
When Kristen Proby announced she was going to write a paranormal romance… I nearly cried. It was like walking downstairs on Christmas Day and seeing that Santa brought you everything you ever asked for.
Shadows was EVERYTHING! I love a good mystery and some intrigue. I love trying to figure out it all out only for the author to throw everything I thought out the window by there being a new plot twist coming out of nowhere! I love it all!!!
Brielle and Cash were FIRE! The instant chemistry burned through the pages! Kristen Proby did an incredible job handling these characters trying to start a relationship in the midst of chaos, and making it believable!
I will say the primary focus was on the mystery of who the serial killer was rather than the romance between our characters. Which was perfectly fine in my opinion. It worked for this story and I probably would have been a little bummed if the focus was put on some angist between the couple in the story rather than them trying to catch the killer.
But let me give you a few tips for reading Shadows (because you know you’re gonna):
Do NOT read Shadows in the pitch black with only your kindle screen as your source for light.
Do NOT read Shadows if you are home alone.
Do NOT read Shadows right before trying to go to sleep, knowing you have to be up at 5:00AM for work.
Yes. I did ALL of these. And let me tell you, I DID NOT SLEEP A WINK! Every single noise had my ass jumping out of the bed in search of the source!
This book will give you the heebie-jeebies and make you question the existence of ghosts, the paranormal in general, and what kind of sickos we live with in this world!
Kristen Proby picked the perfect time of year to release the first book in her new paranormal / thriller romance series. Shadows is the first book in her new Bayou Magic series . This new series features ghosts, evil spirits, black magic, New Orleans Voodoo, good magic, witches, warlocks, and anything sensitive to the “otherly” world.
Brielle Landry is well known for her ghost tours throughout the French Quarter in New Orleans. Her tours are loaded with information and stories most tours don’t relay. The reason is she is sensitive to the other world. She can see the ghosts lurking in every spot, in every crevice, and every corner. She sees their shadows and if she listens, she can hear their stories. She’s very careful on where she takes her tours and gets the most haunted out of the way first. After years of practice, she has learned to desensitize herself for her tours and is very careful not to deviate the course. Everything is going along smooth until one night her usual route and ordinary tour turns into something dark, sinister, and a sense of evil is lurking in the dark shadows. This time a ghost has completely manifested and is determined to make contact with her. This is only the beginning of ghosts reaching out beyond the grave in desperation. There is an evil that is lurking in the dark, waiting for it’s next victim.
Brielle and her two sisters are native to the New Orleans area. They were raised on the outskirts in the bayou and due to their abusive background they have an extra sensitivity. They all have their own special gifts and ways of communicating with the living and the dead. These gifts are not necessarily a blessing but more of a curse and doorway to the evil that lurks beyond.
Cassian Winslow, aka Cash, came to New Orleans for a vacation from his job as a profiler for the FBI. He’s from Savannah and understands how history, ghosts, and tales beyond the grave can have more truth than most people believe. He has also seen the kind of evil no living person should ever see. His job has taught him to see beyond the facts, dig into the story below the surface, and never underestimate it’s drive.
Young women are coming up missing in New Orleans. Mutilated bodies are showing up in the bayou. Brielle is seeing more than ghostly shadows, she’s seeing the missing girls in their horrific ghostly forms. Cash knows she’s seeing more than she lets on. It’s his job to help her communicate with the dead and protect her from the evil she’s seeing. He can help her help them. He can sift through the facts and put together a profile.
Nothing prepared Brielle, Cash, her sisters, and New Orleans for the evil that has unleashed. It’s only the beginning. It’s going to take an army of every type of witch, warlock, voodoo priest/ priestess, and every other magical being to defeat the darkness that has come out of the shadows.
The only thing I can say about Shadows by Kristen Proby is WOW! This book gave me thrills, chills, terror, and goosebumps while also delivering a fantastic romance. There was a perfect balance of the suspense, horror, and romance. As the story developed it was clearly more than a one book story. The delivery, pacing, and evolving plot left readers satisfied with how this story paused ( I won’t say ended or concluded). It paused with a twist that will open the door for more books in this series. I am guessing there are at five or six more to come. I can’t wait!
If you are looking for something different or paranormal I would highly recommend reading Shadows by Kristen Proby!
Wow! Kristen Proby’s jump in to paranormal is fantastic, bone chilling, and down right twisted in the best of ways!
Shadows is a haunting and intriguing paranormal romance that will have leave you on the edge of your seat right until the very end…
Shadows is unlike anything I’ve read from author Kristen Proby before. From the moment I dove into Cash & Brielle’s story, I was hooked. I loved the New Orleans setting and all of the creepy elements the city alone adds to the story. Not only do you have the perfect setting, but when you add 3 unique sisters to the plot line, you are destined for a treat.
Now, I’m not going to go into a ton of details, because I want you to be just as surprised as I was. Shadows is a thrilling and creepy paranormal romance. You may think you know what you’re getting into when you pick this book up, but I promise you Kristen Proby has a lot surprises in store for you. The characters are complex, yet so easy to connect with. The paranormal story-line was intriguing and captivating. It was fresh and unique and kept me glued to the pages. The romance and chemistry between Brielle and Cash was intense and off the charts. Cash was the ultimate book boyfriend. He was supportive, protective and oh, so swoon worthy.
I loved everything about Shadows from beginning to end. This book is the perfect Halloween treat. It’s well written and consuming. It’s sexy and thrilling. It’s filled with mystery and suspense and things that go bump in the night. It will keep you on your toes and it will keep you guessing right until the very end.
Shadows is the first book in the Bayou Magic Series and I can not wait to see where this series is going to go next!!
I liked this book. It wasn’t perfect but I liked it. Believe it or not, I have never read Kristen Proby’s work before picking up this book. I love paranormal stories so I thought that this would be a great place to start. So many things worked really well for me with this book and I am glad I made the decision to give it a try.
I loved the premise of this story. There are three sisters that all have extraordinary abilities. The focus is on the oldest sister Brielle in this book but we do get a chance to see the sister’s powers in action and learn some of their past. The three sisters all have different abilities. Brielle is able to see ghosts. She lives and works in New Orleans giving ghost tours to tourists and some locals. When she starts seeing recent murder victims, she knows that there is a killer on the loose.
I loved the mystery and paranormal aspects of the story. I have to admit that there were parts of this book that were a lot more graphic than I had expected…and I couldn’t have been happier about it because I love a good twisted story. The things that were happening to the women he was taking was almost hard to even think about. The bad guy in this one is a pretty sick case. I was so eager to find out who was responsible and what his motivations were. I thought that the way that Brielle was able to use her gift to help the women was rather imaginative.
Unfortunately, I did have some issues with the story. The romance is this story completely depends on insta-love. Cash see Brielle and decides he is for her. I can sometimes deal with insta-love if the couple has a lot of chemistry but I wasn’t feeling that here. Don’t get me wrong, I liked both Brielle and Cash quite a bit but they way they jumped into a relationship so quickly without even sharing a kiss just felt off. I decided to just go with it and enjoy the story but the romance always felt like the weakest part of the book.
I would recommend this book to readers who don’t mind insta-love romances. Ultimately, I enjoyed the mystery and paranormal elements in the book so much that I wasn’t too bothered by the issues I had with the romance. I do want to read the rest of the series to see what will happen to the other two sisters!
I received a digital review copy from the publicist and have voluntarily left this review.
Kristen Proby’s first fully paranormal book was extremely addicting and had me on the edge of my seat. While she is known for her engaging romances, this book is a dark and suspenseful story, reminiscent of Practical Magic and The Witches of Eastwick. It still has the romance, but it’s not the plot of the story as much as a strong supporting storyline. The villain, a serial killer, is a true villain, he is creepy and psychotic and you want to know more about him while also wanting to read through your fingers. The heroines (because while this story is about Brielle, her sisters are prominent) are complex and interesting and have that quality that all of Kristen Proby’s leading ladies have. You know the one I’m talking about, where you want to go out to drink with them and just be their friends. We also got to visit with some of our favorite characters from the Boudreaux series, which is always enjoyable as a reader, to get to see where familiar characters are now. Overall I am excited for this initial book in the Bayou Magic series. I think Kristen Proby has set up a fascinating new series that is going to keep readers on their toes. I received an arc of this book and voluntarily give my review
Brielle and her 2 sisters Millie & Daphne have always had the ability to experience strange occurrences & see things others can’t. When young women’s dead bodies begin to surface, all resembling Brielle, she has no choice but to try & solve their murders, or else she will continue to be haunted by their spirits – literally. With the help of handsome FBI profiler Cash, can they solve the murders before she becomes the next victim?
One of my favorite authors has once again shown that anything she writes is going to be 5+ stars. With this new anticipated series being paranormal, a genre I don’t read too much of, I was captivated & drawn into the story from the first page. Cash is immediately drawn to the beautiful Brielle & will do anything to keep her safe while trying to do his job. As the oldest sibling, Brielle has always protected her sisters & they have a bond that can’t be broken. With each sister having unique & different abilities, they will need each other more than ever to battle the unforeseen dangers that are coming their way. Another amazing read from this author & looking forward to reading Millie’s & Daphne’s books!
Romance and serial killers and sisters with physic abilities…Shadows had it all and I loved every bit of it! Kristen went in a different direction with this story and she did a fabulous job! Go buy this book!
OMG….this book is amazing, once I start it I can’t put it down.
It’s dark, twisted, full of mystery and suspense with a dash of sweet romance in it. Yup it’s so complex and oh so good.
It has witches, psychics, FBI agent, scary shadows and evil serial killer, oh yeah this book grab me, terrified me and put me on edge from the first page and that’s why I love it. One minute I wince at some gory details and the next minute I smile with the sweetness and the other times I just in awe with those hocus-pocus magic things. Oh yeah this is a book with perfect concoctions of horror, thriller and sweetness.
If you’re looking for an awesome suspense paranormal read, this book is definitely IT, totally recommended.
This is Kristen Proby’s first book in this brilliant new series. Its completely different to the normal contemporary romances she writes and I think she has knocked it out of the park with this one! I Started the book this morning and I struggled to put it down and actually adult. Once my princess was asleep I was hooked until I had finished.
I loved the main characters in this new series, especially the sisters. I can see how strong these women are, how their powers help them blossom into beautiful people inside and out. These girls have grown up in the Bayou surrounded by spirits and magic.
This one centre’s around Brielle and hot FBI agent Cash. These two are seriously hot and give insta-connection a new meaning. Brielle runs the ghost tours in New Orleans and see Spirits, unfortunately for her New Orleans is full of spirits.
A romance mixed with suspense is one perfect blend and a story that will completely draw you in. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this would play out. I cannot wait to see what she is going to bring us next and which Sister will get their story next.
