A match made in hell?Devon and Tanner fight like… well, cats and dogs. Which makes sense since hellcats and hellhounds aren’t exactly a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, their demons’ antipathy towards each other is matched only by the red-hot sexual tension between Tanner and Devon. It’s driving them – and their long-suffering friends Harper and Knox – mad. When Devon is nearly kidnapped, … mad.
When Devon is nearly kidnapped, Tanner’s protective instincts kick into overdrive – he’s sticking by her side, day and night. But staying so close means their hunger can no longer be denied . . . They know their demons won’t accept the match, but after one red-hot night they’ll fight to stay together as long as they can, even though shadows are gathering around them. Devon’s would-be kidnapper is still on the loose, a serial killer carrying rage from a twisted past threatens the lair and, most of all, Tanner and Devon are losing themselves to the heat between them. When this relationship goes up in flames, it could be a blaze that neither of them can walk away from . . .

Suzanne Wright is one of my favourite writers (and yes, I have quite a few of them, lucky me!) and no matter if she writes about demons, shapeshifters,… or ‘normal’ humans, I love all her books.
‘Shadows’ is the fifth book in the ‘The Dark in you’ series and you should really start with the first book in this series. It will give this book more meaning and the demon couple Harper and Knox are definitely worth the read. I love them!!! But even though I enjoyed Harper and Knox’s stories very much, I was ready for a story about another couple and so I was very happy when I discovered that this book would be about Knox’s sentinel Tanner and Harper’s friend Devon. Especially since Tanner’s demon is a hellhound and Devon’s demon is a hellcat and just like normal dogs and cats, their demons don’t like each other at all!!!! This is very sad because from the very beginning, there have been a big attraction between Tanner and Devon but they both knew that their demons would never allow them to act on it. But now, many years later, their demons are tolerating each other and so that gives Tanner and Devon a chance to act on their attraction but for how long?? Neither know that. Demons can be very cold, impulsive and calculating beings and they quickly lose their interest in a person or object. The only thing that Tanner and Devon are sure of is that it will hurt them deeply when they have to say goodbye to each other.
When this book was released, I read a few reviews on it and some readers didn’t find this story as much as the previous ones. So after loving the other books so much, I was hesitant to start this book. But this weekend from some reason I wanted to read it and I’m so happy that I did because I loved every second of it.
The story is again told in both POV’s. I found it fascinated to discover more about Devon’s and Tanner’s childhood in this book. The scars that they both had from things that happened in their past and how they had to overcome it to be together. Being an alpha hellhound made that Tanner was just like Knox, a very dominant male character but just like Harper, Devon knew how to handle his alpha ways. She did this in her own unique way and I enjoyed every minute of it. The banter between these two were amusing and the way how their demons acted to the other was very typical for a cat and a dog. I was very happy with the way how the writer decided ‘to handle’ the enemy demon situation, their interaction and how their ‘relationship’ developed.
It was wonderful to see all the other characters again for the previous books and to meet a very interesting new character who (I discovered later on) will be the main male character in the 7th book in this series!!
‘Shadows’ is a fun, steamy, hot and even an emotional story that I loved very much.
Dark, Delightful, and Freaking Fantastic
Suzanne has done it again! Every page makes me laugh out loud. The character and works building are truly a work of delicious art. This is one fantastic series!!!
I’m not sure anyone can beat Knox and Harper’s story but this was a very close second. Tanner was so much more than I really had expected for him. The playful banter between him and Devon in previous books had me thinking he would continue being just that. Playful. I was pleasantly surprised to see his very, dominant side come out when he found out Devon was in danger. I was also very pleasantly surprised by the reason their relationship went from playful to full on advance. I loved it!
On a side note: If you haven’t read this series yet, this is the only book focused on Tanner and Devon as the main characters. They were side characters in the first 4 books of the series and it looks like the author is moving on to another couple for the 6th book in the series.
I’ve enjoyed this series so much! One of my favorite things about reading books in a series is that I get to keep up with characters from previous books and see how the relationship arc carries on from one book to the next. We’ve known Devon and Tanner from the very first book. I always enjoyed their encounters and quips and snappy comebacks. I can’t wait to see the others get their HEAs.
Even with all the love I felt for this book, I had one issue that took me out of the story a few times. It was hard to keep up with all the bad guys. I couldn’t remember who was involved regarding Devon’s problem and who was involved in the situation with Knox and the sentinels.
Khloe and Keenan….I can’t wait to see that hot mess!!
This is actually a 4.5 star read.
Also, the more I think about this book, the more I feel like Devon and Tanner require more books to complete their story (at least one, I’m begging!). In case any publishers or Suzanne Wright are reading this, and pondering WRITE MORE DEVON AND TANNER, please <3
Loved the story-line and characters, but I was very disappointed at the amount of editing errors in the book. Tiny things where there was an extra word in a sentence or a word missing from a sentence, but it happened numerous time throughout the book. Sure, I can look past them but it gets annoying when they're frequently ripping you out of the story because you're rereading the same sentence five times to make sure your brain is right and the sentence is wrong.
Back to the story itself and characters. I've been dying for Devon and Tanner's book probably since book two in this series, so to finally get all that wonderful banter and see their relationship come out to this was fabulous. I'm extraordinarily curious to know if Devon and Tanner will get more books with them as the main characters since Harper and Knox got four books. I'd love more of Devon and Tanner, especially to see their demons interact and how some things unfold for them. Obviously, I'd love books for all the characters in this series and Tanner and Devon's story could be seen as complete with just the one book, but I'm greedy and want more!
The dual mysteries really kept me interested and frustrated with guessing and wanting to know who was behind everything.
