This is book 2 of The Tower Series. The main character Kayla, has just found out she was from the towers although she had been living most of her life on the surface of this post-apocalyptic world scratching out a living as a “ruin rat” scavenging whatever she could find from the abandoned and crumbling buildings to trade for supplies.
Kayla also found out that she came from a line of energy users and she also could use energy to find things. Sharing energy with her childhood friend Alec and seeing other instances of energy usage had her fleeing the towers, going back to her life on the surface and Carl, her love.
It is a miracle that Kayla lives through this book as she has multiple different people after her. It takes Alec and Carl working together to try and keep her from getting killed.
This book is action packed, and a great read. The author has done a wonderful job describing Kayla’s emotions as she goes through all these changes but, don’t think for a minute that she is a helpless female. She has skills of her own that help her get out of jams. Make this your next book!

As a person who abhors being dictated to, or controlled, I totally relate to Kayla! It’s possible I’m developing a bit of a girl crush! I find her a very expansive character and easily relatable. She’s strong willed and stubborn but will do whatever it takes to protect those she cares about as well as trying to find a way to help those struggling on the surface. All she wants is to make life easier yet she’s thwarted at every turn. It appears that everyone wants use or abuse her. She is captured by another faction and is stunned by the magnitude of her raw power, which surfaces when she tries to escape. She is still confused by this power and by what she can ultimately do or be, but her feelings for both Carl and Alec finally become clear. I loved getting to her realisation, the descriptive way it’s portrayed. The political intrigue is escalating and it’s almost nail biting! It’s a wonderful book of magic and power, so easy to totally immerse in. Love it!

These guys are bad news for the moment, no one knows what their motivations are and that does not sit will with Kayla. She will get to the bottom of it and try to deal with the new powers she has, which she does not want. She does not seem to realize that she has been using those powers all her life without realizing it. But this new danger could be the undoing of the Towers and that scares her a bit because her mother and Alec are there. I really enjoyed the action, adventure and romance. Not to mention the fact that it has a strong female who takes no stuff from anyone. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Holy Moley! This book has all kinds of things happening. This book features great world building and is fascinating! Kayla is torn between Carl who she loves and Alec who she is bonded with. She is not who she thought she was, she is more. There are ancient politics that are coming to light and old rivalries as well. I love all the characters in the book. Jamie depicts the feelings of her characters very well. You could read this book as a stand alone, but it is so much better if you have read the previous stories to know what has gone before. I loved this book and would highly recommend it.
I was so thoroughly taken with the first book that I immediately had to dive into book two… which I finished in two days. Normally I find the excitement and intrigue of a sequel to fall short of the first book in a series, but that wasn’t at all the case here.
While Beneath the Fallen City taught us that we really didn’t know much about the towers, their purpose or the people within its walls, Shadow of the Coalition showed us that there was so much more to the history of it all that Kayla and her friends just didn’t know. There was a great deal of focus on both the romantic and political tension throughout the story that the main mystery almost took a backseat until near the end of the book. This particular aspect was “resolved”, at least in terms of this single book, rather quickly, but left a great deal of unknown for the characters that it’s a comfort that the next book is already available to jump into.
This series hits so many different notes – dystopia, romance, supernatural, thriller, mystery – that it’s definitely worth giving the first book a shot and moving onward through the series. I received a free copy of this book and am leaving my review voluntarily.
I liked this book so much more than the first one. I am growing to like Alec more and more by the end of this book. Kayla is an awesome character and I can’t wait to see where the story goes in book three
Shadow of the Coalition by Jamie A. Waters is an awesome story that I have loved reading. This is book number two in this awesome story that I have read and I can not wait to read the next book. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about Sci-Fi and fantasy in their stories.

Book 2 in Waters’ The Omni Towers series picks up right where book 1 left off. Kayla’s having a tough time, there’s unrest in the towers, so much cause for drama!
Waters’ character development is brilliant; I sort of hated Alec at the end of book 1, but not long into book 2, it’s clear he has pretty pure intentions. At least, I think he does. Clearly, I’m a little undecided still, but I no longer hate him. It’s basically impossible to hold onto my hate and I’m forced to keep an open mind. I applaud Waters’ writing style for making me stop and think, and I’ll just continue in the series and enjoy the ride.
There’s no shortage of drama, as you can see.
There is action, romance, heat, deception, adventure, mystery… what doesn’t this book have?
It does not end on a cliffhanger but I did need to start book 3 right away. I just can’t get enough of this world.
I read an ARC, but can still state that the manuscript is pretty clean so it’s safe to say this book is well-edited and proofed.
Character development is extraordinary. Water uses actions and other characters’ descriptives to get strong personality traits across, her various players really do have distinctly different voices. This is hard to come by in fiction.
This series is truly a gem that I recommend everyone read. I would not change a thing.
5 stars
Okay. I just couldn’t wait. After reading BENEATH THE FALLEN CITY, the first book in the Omni Towers series, I simply HAD to read this second book. And I was definitely NOT disappointed. Everything I loved about the first book was back again in this second book, and now I cannot wait to read the third book in this series! Although this author did an excellent job of bringing the reader up to date without repeating too much, it would probably be a good idea to read Book #1 of this series before reading SHADOW OF THE COALITION (Book #2).
Shadow of the Coalition starts off with Kayla back in the ruins, but what she finds this time may have an impact on the future survival of everyone, both on the surface and in the Towers. Although Kayla is concerned about being in the close vicinity of Alec again, she and Carl find it necessary to travel back to the Towers. Kayla’s concerns nearly explode when she’s alone with Alec. I love the natural chemistry that sparks between Kayla and Carl and yet I’m still fascinated with that bond she has with Alec.
Some fascinating new characters and a whole lot of intrigue are introduced in Shadow of the Coalition and Jamie Waters did an excellent job developing these new characters while keeping this reader glued to her seat with all the action going on. Wow! More twists and turns and action and hot romance! I’m hoping to see more of these new characters in her next book. One thing is for certain… these books are not predictable. You never know what is going to happen next. But whatever it is, you can be assured that this author will make it flow together into a storyline that will leave you wanting more. This series simply demands to be made into a movie! Fans of Firefly and The Hunger Games will definitely agree with me!
Kayla returns to her normal life as a scavenger, but being a ruin rat becomes far more interesting due to her ability to harness elemental energies. Manipulation of these alien forces during a mission unleashes an earthquake and discovery of a new water. Mysterious surveillance is being conducted, Kayla is drawn back to the towers because Carl and Rand are being audited; and finds herself once again pulled into their politics- for someone wants Alec out of power. Unfortunately for Kayla it means making people believe of their bond for their protection- and being driven insane by a body guard. After an awkward between Carl and an unknown woman, Kayla’s world is torn because of the two men and their stupidity and she leaves for her former camp. Only to fall into a deeper hell involving foreign alliances, secret coalition, unknown past world histories, hatreds and bizarre agendas that to lead fiery confrontations and tough decisions. For Kayla, it may finally bring her to embrace what she’s truly capable of and find a place in a very alien world. This second layer of this series powerfully deepens the complexity of the foreign towers and its players- who is an ally, an enemy; it will keep guessing. A wild ride and a story not to be missed, read, read!!
