Ghost summoning? No biggie. Raising the dead? Bring it on. Solving my sister’s sudden disappearance? A bit more complicated…
I’m Serena LeStrange, a necromancer who prefers to hide her freakishly fabulous skills from others. Only my sister makes me feel less of a weirdo, so when she mysteriously vanishes from college, I enroll at Macabre Academy to start my own investigation.
Except this is no … this is no ordinary school for the magically inclined, it’s home to all monsters—even the most dangerous ones. And after meeting an incredibly gorgeous vampire and a sinfully hot reaper, I find myself entangled in a passionate, yet forbidden, flirtation. To complicate matters, I get stuck with a ghostly genie sidekick and suspect a sinister sorority of misdeeds.
But to solve the mystery, I’ll need all the help I can get. Someone at Macabre knows what happened to my sister, and I won’t stop until I dig up the truth.
Unfortunately, some dark secrets prefer to stay buried.

This was a fun read with a quirky FMC that has unexpected feelings towards 2 men that will never work. A mystery or 3 to solve and her own power to get control of.
Well written with hilariously named characters and interesting world building.
This was a fun paranormal read, the main character was well written and her story was a great story being told. I enjoyed the different types of creaturea encountered throughout and a very interesting world

While the beginning took time adjusting to, it was a nice read with an interesting paranormal world and plenty of mystery and light banter at times. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

‘Shadow Magic’ is a paranormal mystery of Serena LaStrange’s sister’s disappearance. The storyline is well written albeit a little repetitive at times, engaging, and full of unexpected twists. Serena is quirky with a bit of snark. The world building was brilliant with details sprinkled in throughout the story. It’s an overall enjoyable book and a fantastic beginning to the series.

I enjoyed this magical story! Serena is a necromancer, the black sheep of her family and the supernatural world. She is a smart, determined young woman. She is suddenly thrown into a whole new world while trying to find her sister Harper. She has to be involved in more of the supernatural world with werewolves, witches, and death. This was a very interesting story and I loved the author’s descriptions while also being extra witty. The author did a fantastic job building and describing this paranormal world!
Fun mystery!!
This was a great, fun read with lots of laughs, mystery, magic and a little romance.
The story made me laugh multiple times and I’m looking forward to the next book to see what happens next!
I recieved an ARC for my honest review.
What Happened to Harper ? . . .
Serena LeStrange is a Necromancer. Her father calls to tell her that Harper, her sister, is missing. She had told him she was joining a sorority and dating a vampire. So Serena transfers to Macabre Academy where her sister was last seen to begin her own investigation.
She meets a girl there who becomes her best friend. She also meets a British reaper by the name of Dante Grimstone and a vampire named Blake Bloodsworth. She will need all the help she can get to find her sister. She has to keep her own talents hidden at the request of her father. But she does know that Harper is still alive and that something odd is going on when her sister’s school records go missing. Can Serena solve this mystery?
“I’m Serena LeStrange, a necromancer with a fondness for animals, who prefers to hide her freakishly fabulous skills from others. Only my sister makes me feel less of a weirdo, so when she mysteriously vanishes from college, I enroll at Macabre University to start my own investigation.”
Well I read this and just had to read it and boy was it good. A fast paced paranormal mystery that is gripping and exciting with some entertaining twists and it’s characters are quirky and fun. There’s also some romance but nothing to heavy and some humour which had me laughing out loud in places. I cannot wait to read the next book.
This was a great first book to a new series. I enjoyed the characters a lot and liked the world of the college and everything it contained. I enjoyed the mystery/search part as well and frankly am a bit bummed the next book isn’t out yet. But it gives me something to look forward to.

I loved this book from the first page. Serena was such an awesome character, and her love for her sister was so overpowering. You can feel every emotion as you read through and see things through Serena’s eyes. And the cliff hanger at the end I can’t wait for the next book!!!!

Serena LaStrange is a necromancer. While attending her advanced studies she learns her sister has gone missing. She immediately transfers schools to try and find out where her sister the only person who’s never made her feel like a freak has disappeared to. Her sister Harper known for being a little flighty, and a little wild but mostly she’s just not the daughter her father wants, neither is Serena for that matter. The authorities aren’t taking this situation too seriously due to the reputation that Harper has developed. So Serena has the following clues: her sister was in a sorority, dating a vampire and her familiar has sought out and attached itself to Serena. She’s got her work cut out for her.
The setting of a university takes on a unique twist with the supernatural beings in attendance. Separated into two clans with no love lost between them. The students have names that hint at their abilities and are for the most part normal with a supernatural upgrade.
I enjoyed the plot it was full of unexpected surprises. I absolutely loved the names they made me giggle lol. The characters are quirky and fun. My only complaint is the story is a bit on the long side. There were times where it was a bit repetitive i.e. going to class, haven’t found new clues. I think it could do with a bit of a trim down. I don’t think it would be detrimental to the story and it would make for an increased reading experience. Otherwise I think it’s a great start to a series and has a fantastic mini cliffhanger ending. And for the record I’m Team Dante all the way!

Puns for days, smooth arc, well developed characters, but lost a point for being more YA than I expected.
This is a great first book of the series! Has some great characters and wonderful writting!! I devoured it! And that cover is so freaking pretty!!
When her sister goes missing, our heroine enrolls in this supernatural school to find her. Of course, entering the school is just the start of her problems and they aren’t going away any time soon.
This is book one of the series.
This is a paranormal mystery story with an academy setting. There is some romance at a young adult level, but it is secondary to the mystery. I found the story to be well written, easy to read and highly engaging. The plot is both fun and twisted at the same time which kept me turning pages to see what came next. I liked the little bits of humor sprinkled throughout which kept things light (or perhaps just lighter). The characters and setting are both well done with plenty of details revealed over the course of the story. Overall, this was a lot of fun and I am definitely looking forward to the next book.
Highly recommended.

This is book one of the Macabre Mystery series and the main character is necromancer Serena LeStrange. She likes out keep out of the way and hide her particular skills from others. Serena is studying for a career as a pet and familiar resurrections specialist at Conjuration University, but the interruption of a grim reaper, who nobody else can see, makes her turn at reanimating a corpse, for an exam she must pass, go horridly wrong! Her sister Harper is the only one who makes her feel normal, but when she disappears from college, Serena enrols at Macabre Academy to investigate what happened to her sister. This academy is not a normal school, it houses all the most dangerous monsters out there. Harper had mentioned to their father that she was going to join a sorority and was also dating a vampire, which raised huge problems with him! She has apparently been missing for two weeks already and the Dean of the school thinks she has just dropped out. She does have a bit of a history of getting bored quickly with things in her life and just flaking out, but the appearance of her familiar, Violet, a large serpent, must mean something is seriously wrong.
Her father is too busy and considers himself too important to be chasing after her whimsical sister Harper, He is a bust magistrate in the Mystical Courts and rang Serena to see if she had seen the latest article about him in the Mystique Daily, as well as ask if she had heard from Harper. He doesn’t think the Grigori Guild (GG), will help look for her due to her past behaviour. The GG are angelic beings who keep preternaturals secret from humans and also look into supernatural crimes. Her father has never liked the fact she is a necromancer, a user of shadow magic, as it is not a very accepted type of magic in their community. Even though it is genetically passed on type of magic, the fact that the rest of their family are mages, sirens and harpies, makes her a bit of an oddball and abomination. The only thing he is proud of about her long studies, is her persistence and hard work towards her degree.
He agrees to her transferring to Macabre Academy, but wants her to hide her necromancy and enrol as a simple witch! He is ashamed of her dark skills and constantly hides this from everyone! Harper was going to join the Vixxens Sorority and her dating a vampire, will give her a great place to start. Someone at Macabre Academy must know what has happened to Harper and Serena will do all that she can to find her. She knows that she isn’t dead, due to her necromancer abilities, so has a strong belief she is alive somewhere. Her father also hassles her as to why she hasn’t joined a clan yet, which is really important in their world. There are only two, Nocturnal and Mythical.Harper is a harpie and has already joined the Mythical clan. To add to her problems, Serena gets herself involved with a hot looking British reaper called Dante Grimstone and a gorgeous, aren’t they all, vampire called Blake Bloodsworth, which isn’t really allowed at the school, and even gains a ghostly genie called Gennie Jinn, who is the other student who disappeared, as an unwanted sidekick!
A threatening warning from a male mage wearing a yellow cloak and the list of possible clients of Harper’s are still the only clues she has to follow, as well as the Vixxen sorority which seems to be linked to more than one missing or dead student. Serena has to hide her own true identity as well as her real abilities, whilst she tries to find out what has happened to Harper. The academy are hiding something, with all her belongs supposedly boxed up and stored, but the boxes are empty and her school records are missing. Someone is working some dark magic to keep everything secret and hidden so well, but Serena swears she will get to the bottom of it, never mind trying to solve it within her first few days there, as her father believes she should have. He thinks she should forget about it and her sister’s disappearance after not immediately finding out where she is! Not a very caring father, but that is him down to a tee, only caring about the family status and his job.
A great read, which whizzes along, keeping your attention all the way. Serena will do what she has to, to find Harper and meets a wide variety of preternaturals along the way. Some romantic flirting with nothing graphic, in a school setting with lots of magic. I really enjoyed this and nothing is quite what you presume. Lots of twists and some big surprises, to catch you out on what you may expect. I really look forward to seeing what might happen in the next book in this series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
