Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee. Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a … dormant power that saves his life — a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling. Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

LOVE this book and the whole series. The entire world is fascinating and the characters are so real. Totally READ this series. 🙂
Fun fantasy YA book. (or maybe middle grade.) Anyway, it was a great set up for the rest of the trilogy. Already bought book 2 for my TBR pile.
This book took me by surprise! I didn’t expect that I was going to fall madly in love, but I SO did! Shadow and Bone is a story that will grip you right from the start and drag you into a world of shadows and secrets. I found myself falling for villains and hoping for things I shouldn’t. I devoured this book and the others in the series. I …
Leigh Bardugo shared a riveting story which neatly wove together a fascinating world of mages, assassins, and intrigue – all set to the fascinating backdrop of an almost-Russian countryside at war.
The minute I finished Shadow and Bone I was on to Siege and Storm, the sequel in the Grisha trilogy! I couldn’t help it, the storyline was just that …
Great Book…couldn’t put it down
NOTE: This review was written before this spell-binding series released.
AKA The Sisterhood of the Traveling Book:
For the past several months, I’ve been part of a book-lending tour de force. A group of authors, myself included, have waited patiently as a single ARC of Shadow And Bone made its way from one of us to another. I waited. And I …
This is a great first book in the series. I finished it last night, and immediately started on book two. I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the Grishaverse!
Overall, I enjoyed this introduction to the GrishaVerse. I found myself enthralled by the unique terminology and the vibrant details of the societies within the book. What fell a little flat for me was that the storyline was rather linear. Yet outside that, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is a book that made me want to read the rest of the …
Oh, this story is simply amazing. The characters, the world, the setting..it’s all just amazing. I was hooked from the beginning and I fell in love with Alina and Mal. They are the truth of friendship and love. If you have not read this series, stop now and go!
This is still one of my favorite fantasy series! The Netflix adaptation is coming out soon, and I decided to re-read the series since it’s been a few years and I needed a good stay-up-all-night read. No one does it quite like Leigh Bardugo. The magic system is rich and interesting, Alina is an endearing Chosen One, and the Darkling is such an …
I finished this within one sitting and I couldn’t put it down! Loved the magic of it so much!
This entire series has every single thing I love in fantasy and nothing I ever complain about. It’s original, the world building is fantastic, the characters all have fantastic chemistry, and I devoured it just as I’ve devoured all of Bardugo’s other books. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a fantasy with a kick.
I read and loved the Six od Crows Duology a couple years back and I knew I would have to read these books. I just loved the world and the characters she created. That was no different with this book.
Of course we get more of the world building and the magic system in this book since it was before Six of Crows and the start.
I really enjoyed the …
Shadow and Bone is a dark and inventive tale deep in the throws if the Grishaverse that is addictive, magical and horrifyingly insightful. I can’t get enough!
SHADOW AND BONE by LEIGH BARDUGO
When I was a child, my grandmother used to make the most decadent, velvet smooth chocolate sauce in the world. I remember pouring it generously over vanilla bean ice cream and watching it turn the snowy mounds into a river of milky goodness. The best part was always dragging my tongue over the spoon, removing …
Well…I’m hooked. Call me a sucker for ye olde old love-triangle featuring both an old friend and a new and mysterious stranger, or maybe a sucker for first person narration, or perhaps a sucker for a powerful female MC, but I fell hard for this one. I can’t say much more since I’ll veer into spoilers, but suffice it to say it was everything I …
Being the incredibly avid book addict that I am I couldn’t resist checking out Shadow and Bone after the amount of Hype it’s received due to the Netflix Show. I can see the appeal, and this book would have gotten a five-star rating from me if it weren’t for the incredibly YA tone of the story. I can understand why the author constructed the first …
I watched the Netflix series in a weekend. Then I was intrigued enough to read the book. I really enjoyed the book a lot more than the series (as is usually the case). It’s told from Alina’s first person POV. It’s a quick, easy read with good action and great characters and exceptional world-building. I love good vs evil stories! Looking forward …
I adore this book! It’s has everything: an awesome magical system, high fantasy setting with a complicated political system, magic, Darkling, so much magic, and did I mention Darkling? 🙂
I loved everything about it, except the ending. I wanted her to end up with a different guy. I understand he is a villain – but villains are the best, and her …
The world building is great, the characters are complex, and the ending got me rushing to my nearest bookstore for the second instalment. Highly recommend.
