Clean and Wholesome Civil War Love Story from Award-Winning Historical Fiction Author Jessica James“It is a book that I think could have the impact of a ‘Gone With the Wind.” – J. Noyalas, Assistant Professor of History“The best Civil War fiction book since Cold Mountain.” – J. Bibb, SCV, Trimble Camp 1836“A classic love story as much as it is a war story.” – Civil War Book ReviewHonor and … is a war story.” – Civil War Book Review
Honor and conviction clash with loyalty and love in this epic Civil War love story that pits brother against brother. Shades of Gray chronicles the clash of a Confederate cavalry officer with a Union spy as they defend their beliefs, their country, and their honor. Called “a riveting piece of historical fiction” by the Midwest Book Review and often compared to Gone with the Wind, the novel takes readers across the rolling hills of Virginia in a page-turning tale of courage and love.
Gallantry and chivalry are put to the test when Colonel Alexander Hunter discovers the woman he promised his dying brother he would protect is the Union spy he has vowed to his men he would destroy. Readers will discover the fine line between friends and enemies when the lives of these two tenacious foes cross by the fates of war and their destinies become entwined forever.

This has got to be one of the most HIDDEN GEMS in HR today ! I am a enormous reader in both HF & HR , reading an average of 160 books per year.
When I began reading this novel I was shocked by how fast the author transported me back into the the Civil War in Virginia . I became one with the female heroine , feeling each of her struggles and …
I’m just going to go ahead and say it. Just push the title out of your mind. This is NOT the infamous book you’re thinking about. (In fact, this one was republished with a new title – Noble Cause, which also, incidentally, as a different ending. Just so you know.)
I love historical fiction. But I am actually a big fan of military fiction. …
Great research.
Better then Gone With the Wind.
One of the most moving books I have ever read. It depicts the civil war in all its blood and glory but at the same time is such a moving love story. It is historical love story that makes you feel you were there witnessing the story unfold. Jessica James is one terrific writer and I cannot recommend it enough.
It made all of the situations very realistic.
I enjoy the civil was stories….this was one of the better fiction books on the subject. Liked all the action and the horses described.
Great book.
I felt that the depiction of Southern life and the Civil War were realistic. The heroine is strong and courageous, unafraid to do what she thinks is right, no matter the cost. I felt like a better person having read it.
Loved it! cried my eyes out due to ending!
Not a happy ever after ending!
I actually read the trilogy: Duty Bound, Honor Bound, and Glory Bound, which I believe are contained in Shades of Gray. These books were absolutely outstanding! If you love historical fiction, make sure you read these books! Jessica James does an excellent job of including real history from the Civil War as it affects very lovable people. You …
I am still in awe of this book as it brought so many emotions for me. First it is so well written and even though it is a novel about the Civil War it is so much more. This book tells the story of loyalty and devotion of both the people from the North and South and what their struggles were during this tragic time in Virginia. We have Alex Hunter …
A wonderfully written novel with lots of twists and turns, happiness and tragedy. Gray refers to many things in this in this storyline.
I loved the interaction between the two main characters and the story which took place in Virginia not all over the whole south. U could understand the love and pride the main characters had for their homeland. Characters were true to life and believable! Wonderful book!!
Comparable to Gone with the Wind, but better! If you love historical fiction, you will love this book!
Very good read!
I enjoyed reading this book.
I loved the book. I am a Civil War fan having grown up not far from Gettysburg. I wasn’t real crazy about the tragic ending although very realistic. My only real complaint was the kindle edition said I could go on line for the epilogue and I couldn’t find it. I will read all of her books. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes …
It was a good story, however I DID NOT like the ending!!!
I wish it had a happy ending
