All that glitters isn’t gold. All that shimmers isn’t innocent.
In her sophomore year at Ocean View College, an institution for training those with magical abilities, Shade is assigned to the Ghost Whisperers House. Likewise, her friends are assigned to houses dedicated to their unique types of magical ability. No longer freshmen, they get to see more of the inner workings of Ocean View: the … Ocean View: the good, the bad and the ugly.
Shade faces several major challenges this year. She supports her selkie friend Apple as she undergoes a difficult surgery. She helps solve the mystery of local children who have gone missing, some returning to their parents in disturbing condition. Learning that the pure-blood faeries wield way too much power in a system that holds others back, Shade also begins fighting to change the status quo. This becomes a pivotal year in Shade’s life as she grows into her destiny as a ghost whisperer.
SHADE AND THE PURE-BLOOD FAERIES is Book #4 in a YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy series.

Shade and the Pure-Blood Faeries (Shade Series, #4), my fifth read from author Marilyn Peake. Enjoyable, tightly woven & well-written read. Think Harry Potter meets the teen Ghost Whisperer. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.” The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Now I need to read Shade Book 5. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have all the other books in the series. Shade is now in her Sophomore year at Ocean View College, and as such is exposed to more knowledge regarding the various types of magical beings. Whilst walking with her friends she realises that there are posters everywhere regarding missing children. Not just one child, but many. She joins the colleges newspaper and online forum and they post regarding these children. It was not a popular thing with some people. In the meantime, her friend Apple is getting surgery to replace her seal skin. Her original was destroyed by bad people , but she had one donated. It was going to be a complicated surgery with a fairly long recovery. The newspaper club were horrified by the old mermaid canning factory and they applied to the college administration to have the place cleaned up and re-designated for the use of students (and the sea people. It was a very busy year for Shade.
Galactic Shade Griffin is now a sophomore in college. In some ways it felt like her freshman year. It was supposed to be about the fairies. I don’t know that it succeded. But the spark missing from book three is back. I’m sad that it is at the end for now. Waiting impatiently for book 5. I got this book from storyorigins and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Being assigned to Ghost Whisperers House this year is the best thing for Shade because she’s never met so many others with her talent before. Better yet, her roomie is from a hereditary family of them and knows so much about the campus, including an aspect totally beyond Shade’s purview– the catacombs. All the magical races mingling here have their own, and they even link in places, but so much goes on there. Also for some reason she didn’t know there was a newspaper club at Oceanview, but her roomie’s the president! Together they will make strides to make the journalist major a tool for success, as it was for Shade during her high school years.
Shade is still clueless in so many areas though. Growing up comes from caring for her friends from all the magical specialties, and learning ‘politics’ and self-control. I would love to go to a school like this, except for the xenophobia and child abductions. The beautiful memorial service of the ocean dwellers for their ‘canning factory holocaust’ brought proud tears to my eyes as I read.
Shade and the Pure blood Faeries is an exciting continuation of the Shade series. Shade is in her second year at Ocean View and she and her friends are determined to get better conditions for the Sea People and find out what’s happening to the missing children. The writing is easy to read, the characters are very realistic and the story just keeps getting better. I voluntarily reviewed this book and I recommend it to teens and adults, I really think you’ll enjoy it.
This a good easy book for a preteen or middle school readers. It’s a clean read with some grewsomness but not overly so. The mention of canning and eating merpeople can be hard for a young overly imaginative mind but most children know to not personalize a story too much by a certain age. The story line is like reading Shades’ diary. Much is told about her activities at Ocean View magical college. She included what classes she’s taking each semester, who her classmates are and her teachers and their magical abilities. A lot of time is spent wandering the catacombs which are like a labyrinth, I love the description and all the different underground pools. I changed my review of Ms. Peake’s story from 3 star to 4 star. I felt it was just a bit slow and not as tight as it could be, the book was a little long for me with some unnecessary chapters but overall it’s a good story. Shades maturity for a college student wasn’t quite there for me. Shade overstated how much fear she has with her overactive imagination making matters worse and how she has a hard time overcoming that. BUT this is her second year of college, I would have like to have seen some more emotional growth by this time. On Shades behalf she does start to realize that she misjudged some of the other kids at college and became more accepting or understanding of them. The end was finally wrapped up but It just took awhile to get there. That being said it is an easy clean read and good light entertainment.
I was given a free copy of the book from StoryOrigin in exchange for an honest review.
Ok, it’s binge reading time, and trust me, after just binge-ing on books 3 and 4 of Marilyn Peake’s glorious Shade Series, there’s no better time to do it. I totally adored both Shade and the Castle by the Sea (Book 3) and Shade and the Pure-Blood Faeries (Book 4). The star of these stories, ghost whisperer Shade, is perfectly crafted. The world-building, with Ocean View College hidden in its island off the coast of California, and it’s witches, faeries, selkies, shapeshifters, et. al., simply superb. The supporting cast with characters like Kai the empath and Apple the selkie, all really well developed and with their own “voices”, and each books storyline full of action fantasy yet somehow totally relatable. Really fantastic stuff here and I highly recommend both books.
