A lighthearted fun read…
Living vicariously through her fictional stories the heroine is outed by an Irish comic/journalist/real life lover who wasn’t aware that her blog & book were not the real deal but merely her fantasies. A unique story just marred by a number of typos etc.
Every woman who has gone through a divorce after more than one decade long marriage identifies with this story. The insecurities about going out single again, the difficulties in relating to previous friends as most of them are couples (noboby likes to be the third wheel), the feeling that you are viewed as a competitor (by a previous friend) and the list goes on. Not everyone has a supporting net as Ruby – the main character – does and even though her life coach has quite a few shortcomings about relating to people and finding love she does help Ruby to get on with her life. There are quite a few steamy parts but most of the book is written with a lot of humor and the characters are easy to get fond of. It´s a true picture of modern newly divorced women and it was fun read!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this story. Ruby’s life is turned upside down when her husband of 20 years dumps her for a much younger model. Chanel, her best friend, becomes her life coach and helps her with dating again. This book was humorous, the characters were likable and relatable, and there were a lot twists and turns. Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it.
This is a one-of-a-kind full range of emotion book that if you have ever gone through a divorce and had a wonderfully supportive but definitely zany friend to get you through it all, you will relate to much of what Ms. Mathews has Ruby experience! There were times I laughed, times I cried, and other times I was cheerleader number one for Ruby to get her mojo on and take back her life! I wasn’t a big fan of Chanel initially but even though her advice sometimes came out of left-field, you realize it all stemmed from love for her friend and she just wanted Ruby to have a fulfilling relationship and be happy. I absolutely loved all the in-her-head comments that Ruby would have whenever Chanel would throw out one of her wacky life-coach do’s and don’ts! Priceless!! A little more depth and development of the men that become involved with Ruby would have been nice, but that was my only real criticism. Basically, a very good book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
At times playful and other times very steamy, Sex with Strangers was an interesting read. It’s set in New York City in 2005 and puts a whole different spin on living in the city. Ruby, a divorcee with a teenage daughter, is trying to figure out how to get back in the dating game, or is she? After being dumped for a much younger model by her husband of twenty years, who sounds pretty uptight whenever he’s mentioned, her life is turned upside down. Her best friend, Chanel, becomes her life coach and she definitely has some unique perspectives on getting Ruby back in the saddle. Can anyone say, embarrassing? Chanel is definitely an x-rated life coach if only to get her best friend back in the dating game and more!
When Ruby decides to take some of Chanel’s life tips but not others she definitely turns her life upside down in more ways than one and puts herself in some interesting situations, both in real life and her fantasy world. There are steamy between the sheets moments and elsewhere even if some are only in Ruby or Chanel’s imagination! I liked Ruby and her daughter but Chanel, not so much. Fergus, as Ruby’s potential love interest, was a nice addition but I felt we only scratched the surface of getting to know him. Her boss, Matt, leaves a lot to be desired with his words and actions.
There are lots of twists and turns and an unexpected happily ever after in the offing but the epilogue was too brief and didn’t go far enough to give me the closure I look for. I liked the playfulness of the cover and loved the titles for each chapter which gave a hint of what was to come. The excerpts at the back of the book held my interest and I look forward to reading more of them.
Ms. Mathews is a fairly new to me author but I’ve read seven of her books already in a little over seven months. I look forward to reading more of her books.
I absolutely enjoyed this story, I loved the storyline, I loved the characters, I loved the humor. I couldn’t put it down, the descriptions were perfect. I loved everything about this book especially the humor. It was funny, sad at times, and I loved it.
