4 stars for book 9 in an excellent legal mystery series.
This book can be read as a stand alone, but the series works better if read in order. Mike Daley takes a leave of absence from his job as head of the Felony Division of the Public Defender office of San Francisco. He does so because his godson, Johnny Bacigalupi, is charged with 1st degree murder.
Johnny is a cop, like his father and 6 brothers. He shot and killed a fleeing suspect. He claims that the suspect was reaching for a gun. The DA believes that Juwon Jones was unarmed.
Mike receives pressure from Johnny’s dad, Gio, an Assistant Chief in the SFPD, and Johnny’s uncle Luca, a successful corporate lawyer, to take the case, which he can’t legally do as a Public Defender. Rosie Fernandez, elected head of the Public Defender office reluctantly authorizes a leave of absence.
There is a somewhat messy but realistic ending to the case.
I recommend this series to anyone who likes legal mysteries. The courtroom scenes are top notch.

This was in many ways a typical Daley series book. They are always enjoyable and easy reads. This particular story highlights some of the issues of the Black Live Matter movement, specifically excessive use of force by police related to minor infractions by minorities and the political tensions around such incidents.

Just the right amount of suspense and detective work and courtroom with down to earth and likable characters. I enjoy all the books this author has written and look forward to more,

I love Siegel’s entire series. The investigation into the mystery, the juxtaposition of the courtroom theatrics vs. the action on the street, the interweaving of San Francisco as a living character into the plot – all of these are well done. All the books are fast paced, keeping you constantly turning that (digital) page! This books deals with some thorny issues currently facing many of our cities, so it feels like it was written yesterday. I highly recommend all of Siegel’s novels.

I am so happy to have discovered Sheldon Siegel. I like reading books with characters I know and can’t get enough of Mike and Rosie! Even though they take on the toughest cases, that seem to be unwinnable in court, they pull it out. Also important to me that the ending is not obvious; it maintains one’s interest to the end.

The literary excellence of Sheldon Siegel is uncanny his stories flow lake a raging river from the first sentence till the last paragraph. I really like how his is able to get me hooked in the story line as I try to figure out who’s the culprit as the story continues to unfold with every word written, if you like a good white knuckle edge of your seat novel this author is a must read.

I love reading Sheldon Spiegel’s work. The characters are so realistic and likeable. Long before book #9, the characters became like family. I love the way he puts Mike’s thoughts in italics before he actually writes what Mike is saying. It gives extra insight into his character and makes him more likable. He also has great knowledge about the history of the San Francisco area that he shares making everything more believable. Overall and excellent book and and even better series. I can’t wait for the next book.
