The characters are well drawn. There is humor. She moves the reader to another place and time easily. So her medieval details don’t make you feel as though you are reading a textbook. I almost never read series books one right after the other, but I enjoyed hers so much, I read all three!
Nice mystery books. I found the culprit to be unpredictable. In the three books, until the story ended I could not predict who did the crime.
History and mystery in a well written series. Main characters are well developed and the outcome of the mystery is not readily apparent allowing the reader to ponder the crime and clues along with Sir Crowner.
Wonderful conception of 12th Century life and how they solved mysteries in that era.
Can’t wait for new tales.
Many times as I read, I think “why did the author use that phrase/word..it doesn’t flow well”. Not once in the reading of this trilogy did the narrative stumble. Denise Domming is true wordsmith who doesn’t descend to throw ing in a few “thou’s and hast” into a story and calling it a medieval tale. She is able to invoke in the reader a sense of place and culture
I am eager for the final book.
Must read series
Very realistic for 12th century medieval England. I’m not sure of the historical accuracy as in the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters , but if you like him, you’ll possibly be intrigued by this series. I’ll definitely be getting the sequels.
Well written and historically right on. The series is tracing the origins of the modern day ‘coroner’ by following a medieval knight who is, basically doing that job and also acting as a detective in finding out who has killed the different corpses he is bound to oversee as the ‘crowner.’.
The characters are memorable and the mysteries are very satisfying with complex motives.
A truly remarkable series, can’t wait for mote.
Highly recommended, this novel interweaves a detailed picture of the time period with a gripping story and original characters. You will not want to put this book down!
I read and was unexpectedly surprised! Very Good!
I am a big fan of the Brother Cadfael books which is why I chose this collection. I was not disappointed and found the differences and similarities delightful. Great characters, and interplay between them. Terrific research is apparent. I will be looking for more of these.
Great historical “whodunit!”
Although it’s a “three book set” it feels more like one long book with a few mysteries to be solved. This book was obviously well researched and one is effortlessly transported to the middle ages. I learned a few interesting tidbits and enjoyed the setting and characters. Well done. I look forward to the next.
I was prepared to be disappointed in these books as it’s chancy to pick up stories set in early England. Either the background is poorly delivered, or the characters and plot are unbelievable. I was pleasantly surprised, and engaged, in the story line and major characters. Hope to continue reading the series.
LikeBle characters and fascinating glimpse into a period we don’t read much about
Looking forward to the next .
Excellent historian writing this book. Very informative on the derivation of our modern legal customs and laws.
What a great premise: a knight is appointed Keeper of the Pleas aka Crowner (Coroner) of a district in medieval England, and becomes a detective solving murders in order to collect fees for the absent King Richard. The novels show us how things worked back then in terms of power, wealth, religion, and social relations. And the mysteries are quite good, too!
GREAT story and based upon historically true occurrences. You’ll find yourself transported back in time to a place where, while some say it was “simpler”, you’ll find that simplicity came at a great price for most people. The characters are very well developed with a wide range of emotions and circumstances. Be sure to read this series.
