PRAISE FOR SEPTEMBER MOURN
“Janet Evanovich fans have a new reason to celebrate! September Mourn is fun, funny, and so cleverly written, you’ll be guessing until the very end.” ―Gemma Halliday, best-selling author of Mayhem in High Heels
”Another amusing tale set in the town full of over-the-top zanies who’ve endeared themselves to the engaging Mira.” ―Kirkus Reviews
”…an entirely engaging novel with pathos, plot twists, and quirky characters galore. Beautifully written and wickedly funny.” ―Harley Jane Kozak, American actress and author
“Lourey has a talent for creating hilarious characters in bizarre, laugh-out-loud situations, while at the same time capturing the honest and endearing subtleties of human life.” ―The Strandmore
I especially enjoyed the Minnesota State Fair location as I’ve been there many times and it was just like I was there walking around the grounds myself.
If you’re not a Minnesota resident or haven’t attended the Minnesota State Fair, you might not like September Mourn as much as I did. If you’ve been to the State Fair, you’ll recognize the names of streets and avenues, rides, food booths, and animal barns. In fact, you might even be able to SMELL the items described in the book. And the princess contest with heads carved in butter? That’s as real as can be. Mira, the main character, a librarian and part time reporter in Battle Lake, is assigned the task of writing articles for the hometown newspaper every day, focusing on Battle Lake residents. Unfortunately the winning Milkmaid Mary Princess from Battle Lake is murdered while in the butter carving booth. The book is fast paced, and Mira makes a credible and interesting detective, but the humor in the book is what won me over.
I enjoyed so much about this book: the colorful, slightly over-the-top characters, the setting (the Minnesota State Fair), the clever plot and witty dialogue. I experienced laugh out loud moments, which I tried to share with my sleepy hubby. He was less amused, but I have added the book to his reading list. We’ll see.
September Mourn is a fun light read. The setting is well drawn out.
Fun read
Murder, mayhem, butter sculptures, sheep riding, Neil Diamond and deep fried Nut Goodie bars all come together in a funny, interesting story set at the Minnesota State Fair. As a Minnesotan and an avid fan of the Minnesota State Fair, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am eager to read the next one in the series. Good writing, good characters and lots of great humor.
Good summer read especially as we come to the time of the state fairs. Well written with certainly an original approach to the subject matter!
This book was funny the characters funnier Mira couldn’t get into more trouble if she tried the only problem is she had no faith in herself but still seems to pull it all together with her crazy friends will read the next to see what trouble she can find herself in
Brilliant, totally engaging plot and characters, especially the lead. I read and loved the first in the series and now this.
I really enjoyed this story.
The book could do with some editing but the story line kept me engaged enough that I could overlook these minor issues. Interesting, flawed character who is definitely not a cookie cutter cozy mystery type; I plan to read more of this series.
It was good. Liked the other books. Will get the other one. We went to battle lake to visit some of the places mentioned in the books.
It brought back great memories or attending the Minnesota State Fair!
You might become a vegetarian after reading this story.
Hokey. But I’m from Minnesota so I read it!
This story was good. The vocabulary was excellent and the similies and metaphors were creative. The book needs a good editorial review, however. There were several errors particularly in the first half. In spite of that, I really enjoyed reading this book.
If what was written about the experiments on cows is true, then it is appalling. I hate to think that chemicals are fed to cows to increase production while endangering animals and humans alike. Please tell me this is not going on. The cyanide source is creative.
It definitely was witty!
Couldn’t get into it. Didn’t finish.
Loved the book
