In nineteenth century New Zealand, there are few choices for a farm girl like Amy. Her life seems mapped out for her by the time she is twelve. Amy dreams of an exciting life in the world beyond her narrow boundaries. But it is the two people who come to the farm from outside the valley who change her life forever, and Amy learns the high cost of making the wrong choice.
“One of the best historical novels I’ve had the pleasure to read in years.” – WorkingGirl Reviews.
“The story was captivating, the characters real, the dialogue crisp. I admit to having cried and laughed and even having wanted to murder a character and beat another one within an inch of his life — which is simply a testament to how well written these books are.” – AmericanEditor.

slow moving for me
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The sequels, too!
Not a bad read, though pedantic.
I identified with the main character, and couldn’t put the book down. It was quite sad at the end, and I bought the next book in the series. Informative of how other people live, and survive tragic circumstances. Amy is very naive, then very brave as she accepts her fate.
I found it very engrossing-a good story-line with great characters.
excellent gook well written keeps you interested
True to life back in the day.
It left you wanting to read the next in the series
I liked the book and really got into the book. The heroine really went through a lot and you root for her. She does come out a winner.
Although not a joyful book, it was fascinating none the less. The descriptions of farm life in New Zealand, and the hard life of women, were incredibly interesting. The main character was inspiring, and she was surrounded by quite an odd lot of supporting characters, some hateful and some lovely. I am currently reading the sequel.
Loved this book I am reading book two now
It was depressing
had to buy the next two books
this book show filings
The history and discovering New Zealand in the 1800s was excellent!
I like happy endings. This wasn’t one of them.
This book has great reviews on BookBub, but I just couldn’t get into it. I read what seemed like pages and pages but nothing seemed to happen. Maybe, like Michener books, it was great after a really long intro. I couldn’t keep reading.
First in a series, read every single series, referred to my mom and she loved the storyline as well. You really feel like you know the characters, some you like some you detest. My favorite read so far, and I read a lot.
I read all 3. I liked it. Cried some. Thought provoking.
A little slow. Picturesque.
