I enjoy this series so much. It’s a skillful blend of regency, paranormal, romance, and suspense that just wouldn’t be the same without all the different pieces that make it up. My journey in this series started quite a bit further in, but now I’m finally taking the opportunity to come back and see where it started. Eden and James are an interesting pairing in a bit of an Odd Couple way. She’s free-spirited and opinionated and embraces every last one of her emotions. James, while equally opinionated, is much more reserved and doesn’t have a clue what to do with strong emotions other than supress them and lock them away. The history is that Sinclairs save Ravens, but is it possible that Ravens can save Sinclairs too?
If you want to read a fantastic series from start to finish, start with this book. I normally don’t read books with characters with heighten senses; however, this book series with is amazing. I couldn’t stop reading each book. I can only ask you to read this first book in the series and then you see what I mean. You will not stop until the last book has been read. You have nothing to lose.
Raven and Sinclair series is GREAT!
Fascinating romance with just a hint of magic!
Eden rescues James, a man thrown off a cliff by his would-be murderers, and this starts them both on the journey of both finding out who wants him dead and why her family is always coming to the rescue of his family.
Turns out there’s a centuries-old commitment between the Sinclairs and the Ravens, resulting in some uniquely helpful developments and a strong sense of duty. There’s also plenty of room for a delightful love story as James and Eden realize the strength of their bond and the depth of their love for each other. There’s a poignant focus on the history of the Raven family and all that James has had to endure, and how he overcomes his demons to find peace at last with the rambunctious Sinclair family.
As the first in an on-going series, it beautifully sets the stage, introduces the many characters in a way that makes them each easily remembered, and establishes a wonderful family foundation for generations to come. I can’t wait to read more in this series.
Sensing Danger is a great historical romance with a little supernatural flair by Wendy Vella. Ms. Vella has delivered a well-written book and filled it with phenomenal characters. Here’s where I confess, I read some of the books from this series out of order. I must say, I wish I had read this first, it’s a fantastic kickoff for the series.
The Sinclair family has heightened senses, legend says because they once saved the head of the Raven family and a pact was made. James, Duke of Raven, is attacked, tied and tossed off a cliff into the ocean. Eden has a heightened sense of hearing and overheard the plan. She got into the water as quickly as she could and waited for James to hit the water. After cutting his ropes they helped each other to safety. James and Eden’s story is packed with drama, humor, action, sizzle and suspense…all the things you want in a historical romance. I loved this book from the first page to the last and look forward to reading more from Wendy Vella in the future. Sensing Danger is book 1 of A Sinclair And Raven Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Legend says the Sinclairs’ heightened senses are a result of a long ago pact between them and the powerful Raven family. To honor and protect is their creed, but the current Duke of Raven does not make their task easy. Duke James is arrogant, aloof and determined to forge his own path and to hell with the folk tales that his ancestors created. Breathtaking Eden Sinclair saves his life by risking her own. Their past resurfaces, and with it comes the uncomfortable realization that more than history links them. Eden sees the man behind the cool, haughty façade when she must use her special abilities to keep him safe. His suspicion of her soon turns into something else, something far more dangerous. Eden struggles between duty and self-protection. She must have strength to fight fate or risk her own heart. – The Sinclairs have stronger than normal senses of sight, smell, hearing, and taste. It is unusual, as they are as a group. They love each other wholeheartedly and always stand by each other. They, like the Duke, had a mean father who did not show them love. The attraction between Eden and James is strong from the start. It is interesting to see their friendship develop, along with that between James and the brothers, James and his sister, and the females with each other. Being around the Sinclairs lightens James. He becomes less arrogant and aloof and is more likeable. This is a very good book, as are other books in this series.
Really a 3.5. The Sinclair siblings are a close-knit family with secrets about their heightened senses and instincts to protect the family of the Duke of Raven. Unbeknownst to Eden, that she is rescuing the Duke of Raven, she brings him back to her home where her siblings help her care for him. He is very grateful but hurries back to his home with their assistance, as he has a young sister to care for whom he only recently discovered existed. Eden and the Duke are attracted to each other but he had an abusive father, so he doesn’t think he knows how to love. His amorous advances that went further than a kiss seemed out of character for an esteemed military man who is known for self-control. I found it unappealing for him to be so forward and forceful (which is why I downgraded the rating), even though I wanted their characters to express their feelings a bit and it was meant to show how his desire for Eden drove him a little crazy. As Eden starts her first season and is sought after at dances, the Duke’s jealousy forces him to think about her and his future, but Eden is protective over her feelings for him and convinced that he would have power over her should he find out her secrets. I will be reading the sequel, “The Lady in Disguise”.
I love all of Wendy Vella’s books.
I loved how James spoke to Essie re fight for the one she loves. Loved this book and all the wonderful characters. Hard for me to put down.
Wendy Vella’s works are always five star.
I really enjoyed the story, the premise and the characters but was very disappointed that I had to skip large chunks of it because of the sexual content. Not necessary to the plot at all and not tasteful.
The entire series is wonderful!
Good story with a touch of magic. Likeable main characters. Ancillary characters beg for their own story.
This series had me hooked, couldn’t put it down
When you reread this you wonder at all the other 5*s you gave out. This is wonderful, scintillating, a read again every year book. I know you know the story, but you forget the wonderful dialogue, renew the wonderful feel good factor.
As a historical romance, I enjoyed it. The scenes moved well. The mystery carried well throughout the story. The villain was hidden/disguised behind smoke and mirrors, I had no idea. The angst and tension were most excellent as we rushed to foil the machinations of the evil one. The author did a great job introducing characters that will be featured in upcoming books. Note: I peeked ahead and looked at the future pairings so I would know whom to watch. That was exciting.
*** This review may contain spoilers*** Rating: MA: due to adult themes: violence and murder attempts. Trigger warnings: discussions of child abuse, kidnappings, descriptive, and graphic sex scenes. It was not what I consider a bodice ripper, but what do I know? I would not recommend this for a young reader. I love the cover.
Paraphrased from the prologue of the book: ‘In the year 1335, Baron Sinclair saved the life of the Duke of Raven. King Edward III, grateful to the Baron for saving the life of his wise counsel, granted the land at the base of Raven Mountain to the Sinclair family. In the eyes of the King, the Sinclair family was now the official protector of the Ravens. Thus, the Sinclair family Creed: To honor and protect the Raven Family.’
To date, there are 8 books in this series. I’ve waited to start reading them until I could get my hands on several in a row. I hate to wait for a book to come out. I appreciated that some of the books were a free offer on Amazon. Each book will feature a love interest for each of the siblings and relations of the Raven family. Each features the continued quest of the Sinclair siblings to ‘Honor and Protect the Ravens.’ The younger children will have plenty of time to grow up and have their own stories later. In the meantime, they can sit on the back burner for a while. I look forward to book 2 in this series and highly recommend this for those who like a little paranormal in their love story.
The first book in a series is always difficult as the author has to establish the background story, introduce all the characters [seven siblings], and hook the reader within a few chapters. I thought the author, Wendy Vella, did an excellent job of wrangling all the above and especially all the siblings. It was a bit chaotic there for a bit but what Vella did to demonstrate the powers of the siblings was amazing. I was hooked immediately. I love a bit of paranormal in a love story.
Something happened back in 1335 that was hinted at but not revealed in book 1. The Sinclair family had an ‘extra sense’ of things and they used those gifts/powers to protect the Raven family. This was no spoiler as it was mentioned in the book blurb. In the case of this story, I felt the title was mislabeled. ‘Sensing’ danger was a trail all the Sinclair siblings had in common; however, that was not the ‘gift’ that Eden [our featured heroine] possessed. Of course, that was the author’s choice. She could have been referring to all the Sinclair family.
What I liked: all the siblings, especially the younger children. The main thread of the story was how the siblings rallied around each other in spite of their horrid father… and, OMG, he was horrid. In fact, none of the fathers were worth spitting at. The way they treated their children was awful. As the siblings grew, they protected the younger children. Overcoming the hurt and pain of their childhood forged the family bond between the siblings. This might be difficult for some readers. However, they did manage to overcome their hurt and emotional pain.
What I didn’t like: I had a hard time liking the Duke. Vella did an excellent job of showing his growth throughout the story. I will admit that I liked him better at the end of the story than I did at the beginning. However, his vacillating back and forth gave me whiplash. I also didn’t like or appreciate the way he treated the heroine as it rang as being abusive. That made the sex scenes between them not very romantic. *** spoiler*** In fact, in one scene she kept saying ‘no’ and he wouldn’t listen. I did not appreciate that one bit. At that point, it felt like it was all about him and was a major disrespect toward her. Especially with her family nearby. With their heightened senses… how could they not know what was going on with their sister in the next room? Really??? I think not. *** end spoiler***

This series gets you more and more involved with this interesting family. Must read them all. Supernatural and Victorian. Well done.
The Sinclair family has been protecting the families of the Dukes of Raven for centuries. At the beginning of the book, Eden Sinclair saves the life of James, the current duke. The four eldest Sinclairs each ave special gifts (exceptional sight, an acute sense of smell, an ability to taste and identify poison, and supernatural hearing). Each of these senses comes into play as the Sinclairs try to keep Duke James Raven alive while identifying who is trying to murder him. The book is complex an delves into the nature of family as well as the power parents have to shape (or harm) their children. Character growth and development is key in this novel.
Love this series
