My name is Nora Black, and I’m fifty-one-years young. At least that’s what I tell myself, when I’m not having hot flashes, my knees don’t hurt, and I can find my reading glasses.I’m also the proud owner of a salon called Scents & Scentsability in the small resort town of Garden Cove, where I make a cozy living selling handmade bath and beauty products. All in all, my life is pretty good. … pretty good. Except for one little glitch… Since my recent hysterectomy, where I died on the operating table, I’ve been experiencing what some might call paranormal activity.
No, I don’t see dead people, but quite suddenly I’m triggered by scents that, in their wake, leave behind these vividly intense memories. Sometimes they’re unfocused and hazy, but there’s no doubt, they are very, very real. Know what else? They’re not my memories. It seems I’ve lost a uterus and gained a psychic gift.
When my best friend’s abusive boyfriend ends up dead after a fire, and she becomes the prime suspect, I end up a babysitter to her two teenagers while she’s locked up in the clink. Add to that the handsome detective determined to stand in my way, my super sniffer’s newly acquired abilities and a rash of memories connected to the real criminal, and I find myself in a race to catch a killer before my best friend is tried for murder.

“I’m loving the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre! Renee George’s humor shines when a woman of a certain age sniffs out the bad guy and saves her bestie. Funny, strong female friendships rule!” – Michelle M. Pillow, NYT & USAT Bestselling Author
This was an entertaining book about Nora Black and her friends and one of them is charged with murder and Norma gets working on getting her out of jail and clearing her name. While Nora is looking into all the evidence, she finds out that different scents of items give her a psychic connection of the person who touch the item and finds a way to help the police. This is an original way of solving crimes that I have read in all mysteries.
A Wonderful Beginning to a New Series.
Shortly after Nora had a hysterectomy where she died on the operating table she starts having scent induced visions. Instead of seeing visions of the future she sees other people’s memories. Wicked crazy right?
Just when she’s able to go back to work, Nora starts getting the visions. Luckily, they come in handy when her BFF is arrested for murder. Nora thinks that if her visions are real and not a brain tumor or she’s just going nuts they just might help her figure out who killed Jilly’s ex-boyfriend.
It doesn’t help that the detective in charge of case is sexy as all get out. But his arresting her BFF kinda puts a damper on things.
I throughly enjoy listening to this book. The narrator did a fair job. I would give him 4 stars the voices he did, just didn’t sound like how I thought they would sound. As for the story itself, I gave it 5 stars.
I loved Nora with all of her take no non-scents attitude. She can take middle age, her best friends and a surprise “you have a new talent” and bundle it all into a fabulous journey that you want to read. It doesn’t hurt that there is some antagonism from the police – one ex-husband and one sweet Ezra! There is lots of action and plenty of mystery. This is just the first in the series. More books to come –wheee!
Interesting book! I really enjoyed the characters. They were well written and showed strength, courage and loyalty. The storyline had great twists and turns with a bit of humor weaved throughout. I love mysteries and I really like this because it was unique.
Sense and Scent Ability is a delightful start to a new cozy mystery series. Nora Black died on the operating table for exactly twenty-seven seconds and since she came back she has the ability to sense other people’s memories. She uses this new ability to help the hunky (younger) detective solve the case of who killed her bff’s abusive ex-boyfriend.
Nora is a total hoot and her friends encourage her in the best ways. This was a wonderful way to meet Nora and her crazy cast of friends. I look forward to more adventures with the lot.
No spoilers in my review, this book is hands down a fun mystery that you don’t want to miss. An excellent start to a new series in the extensive repertoire of Renee George, her new leading lady, Nora Black, is someone that most of us can identify with, as a not twenty-something, wannabe sleuth. She has developed the ability to use smells and odors to see things that have happened in the past. After a few tense moments, she’s enlisted by the police department to help solve a crime her bestie has been accused of. The characters and story are so good, well told and well developed, you feel like you’re there or could drop yourself into the story at any time…add the bonus of a little romance and you’ve got exactly what you look for in a page-turner cozy. I received an advance copy and this is my honest opinion. So find a quiet spot, grab a drink and hunker down for an enjoyable read.
An unusual paranormal gift descends on Nora after her clinical death during a hysterectomy. Psychic visions triggered by powerful scents.
As gifts go, that one could be a real mixed blessing.
For Nora, her visions are a not easy to guide hint into the otherwise hidden life of family, friends, strangers – and she uses her gift to try for insight into elements of a crime her best friend is blamed for.
An intense adventure!
This is one hilarious story and well worth reading!
Nora Black is a very interesting woman. She’s endured so much grief in the last year, starting with the death of her mother and ending with her own death (for 27 seconds) on the operating table recently. Now she has a weird new ability to see visions triggered by scents. An ability that she needs to figure out if she wants to prove her best friend’s innocence. All she has to do us convince Ezra, the hot detective on the case of her psychic nose.
This is one of the best cozy mysteries I’ve read recently and I strongly recommend it.
Another fabulous read by one of my favorite authors!! A new physic ability that I’ve never heard of, so that makes it more interesting…I love the characters and the storyline. I recommend this book too anyone who enjoys paranormal mysteries.
Nora is fifty-one, fabulous, a business owner, a great friend, and has a new ability – she can sometimes get scent-memory visions. She thinks she might be going crazy (or have a brain tumor)….until she has to put her new talent to the test when her best friend is arrested for murder. Can she work with the handsome (and younger) detective to find the real killer?
A fun cozy mystery in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre. I truly enjoyed it and look forward to the next book.
I received a copy of this book from the author via ProlificWorks. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
This is just what we need right now a good opening for a new series. We needed the mystery and humor with characters that takes us away for awhile. I also adore that Nora is older too which is refreshing. She is fabulous and so easy to stick with right away. Her story is intriguing with us caught up in it right away. The murder that draws us in and also having us help her in tracking is one that you can get your teeth into. Actually over all this is completely refreshing the way it is and how it flows. She is the picture of what friends are for would you not say?
This was a fantastic read with a strong female heroine. I enjoyed everything about this book plenty of intrigue, suspense, action, and of course laugh out loud moment to keep you hook from beginning to end. So looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
Nora is going through what most fifty-one-year-old woman deal with and much more. She had surgery and died on the table. When she came back it seemed a new ability tagged along. As a seller of scented products for women, she’s always had a good sniffer. Now, add certain smells trigger memories–only they aren’t hers. That’s right.
When her bestie is accused of a serious crime she hopes her ability will help. Problem is she can’t just direct it where and when she wants. The hot detective isn’t gonna believe her anyway. She’s on her own, well along with her bestie’s two teenagers.
This is one of my favorite over-forty heroines and books. I enjoyed the premise, the ex (oh, by the way, he happens to be the police chief) and younger detective, girlfriends, successful women, a little sexual tension and super intrigue throughout the story.
I can’t wait for more.
Nora is recovering from surgery and her best friends are acting like mommies with her, but she has had enough the doctor says she can go back to work. She opened a business about 8 months ago. Now her best friend Gilly is dating Lloyd but he’s abusive and she sees that Gilly dumped him but not physically. She has changed since the surgery but she is scared to tell her friends. Things start to heat up when Lloyd comes to her house drunk one night looking for Gilly, from there things seem to go down hill for both of them until Detective Ezra Holden steps in and he is investigating and Nora is not sure he is trying to help or to hinder her own investigation. Lot’s of action, suspense, mystery and romance. The story line is very intriguing and realistic as well as characters are very interesting.
I was given an ARC as a gift from author without obligations. I am providing an honest review.
I like paranormal mysteries, but the central conceit here I just couldn’t suspend disbelief on.
Getting older is not easy–but when you end up having a hysterectomy–dying on the operating table–coming back alive–well that would throw anyone for a loop. But to end up with psychic abilities? That is what happens to Nora Black. Certain scents bring on memories that are not hers! When her best friends ex is found murdered and said friend ends up in jail–will Nora be able to convince the detective that her friend did not do it–Will she be able with this new found ability to find the true guilty party?
I did find myself laughing a bit at all that Nora goes through–that detective was stubborn–until he realized that maybe Nora was not kidding about her psychic abilities. This is a fun, clean mystery!!
