New York Times bestselling author Martin offers us “grace, mercy, and forgiveness in this sweeping love story.” Allie is still recovering from the loss of her family’s beloved waterfront restaurant on Florida’s Gulf Coast when she loses her second husband to a terrifying highway accident. Devastated and losing hope, she shudders to contemplate the future–until a cherished person from her past … cherished person from her past returns.
Joseph has been adrift for many years, wounded in both body and spirit and unable to come to terms with the trauma of his Vietnam War experiences. Just as he resolves to abandon his search for peace and live alone at a remote cabin in the Carolina mountains, he discovers a mother and her two small children lost in the forest. A man of character and strength, he instinctively steps in to help them get back to their home in Florida. There he will return to his own hometown–and witness the accident that launches a bittersweet reunion with his childhood sweetheart, Allie.
When Joseph offers to help Allie rebuild her restaurant, it seems the flame may reignite–until a forty-five-year-old secret begins to emerge, threatening to destroy all hope for their second chance at love.
In Send Down the Rain, Charles Martin proves himself to be a storyteller of great wisdom and compassion who bears witness to the dreams we cherish, the struggles we face, and the strengths we must summon when life seems to threaten what we hold most dear.

I am speechless. I really am trying to come up with the words to adequately describe how I feel about this book. I guess for one thing I feel undone. This author has a way of making you feel all the emotions that any human heart could possibly feel. This is a beautiful story of love and sacrifice. It made me ponder about myself and how self sacrificing I am. Unfortunately, I come up short. The hero, and I do mean HERO is a sacrificing protector of those he loves. Even the ones he doesn’t care for at times. The author seems to create the most awesome heroes in his stories and this book has the most amazing one ever. I listened to the book on my Overdrive app and the narrator in my opinion is the best male voice I have ever heard. He exuded all the raw emotions perfectly, or as perfectly as any one could possibly do. I can’t recommend this book enough. I feel this would make an amazing book club pick to discuss around a table.
Are you looking for a good read that will knock you off your feet? Send down the Rain can do that for you. At times you want to throw the book across the room because you feel so betrayed and you find yourself crashing to the bottom of the ocean. And then…guess you’ll just have to read it for yourself!
In “Send Down the Rain” we find an amazing cast of characters. This is a story of perseverance and fortitude. The author takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Just when you think things couldn’t get worse and you’re disenchanted with Joseph, hang in there. The ending is worth the wait. This story really hit my heart hard. I think it’s because I could relate to many of the story lines. This is one of those books that enters your heart, but you can’t quite put your finger on the “why”. It stays with you for a while.
Send down the Rain is a good book, which has the overall message of the importance of forgiveness. The characters are all interesting, some of them who served in the Vietnam War, some of immigrated illegally, all who struggled. Worth the read — with an unpredictable ending.
I love Charles Martin’s books. Have read them all.
This is another great book by Charles Martin. His story telling is the best in my opinion.
Good book. Not what I had expected.
This is a book I will read again and again!
His writing brings characters to life. He writes in a way that is so understandable yet very deep and ‘soul-revealing’. Could write about a dictionary and make it interesting.
Love reading works by this author. Great character development and interesting story line.
Every book I have read by Charles Martin has been a wonderful read!
great book – a little hard to follow at first, but it all comes together and is a wonderful book. Sad how people judge and treat others without true information and we are all guilty. Another example of who really come across our borders and why. Some good and some bad in everything. Sadly none of the people who complain the most would lower themselves to the circumstances and work many of those people do, but certainly enjoy the end product of their work. Additionally, the draft may not have been the best idea, but spitting on and treating those who were required to go, was rude and wrong. Come on people, lets try to find better ways to express ourselves and better solutions.
