Shawn McClellan was part of a fierce, tight group-a platoon of fewer than twenty United States Marines. A machine gunner deep in the Vietnam bush, Shawn fought and won battles with no names, and watched brave friends give the ultimate sacrifice. Death chased him. Rain, leeches, and malaria sapped his strength. And back home in an ungrateful country, right and wrong were decided by what was … easiest. Prayer was his last refuge, but it was hardest of all.

This book is amazing. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know what it was really like!
good story
A view of the Vietnam war from the perspective of a grunt on the ground. While we may debate the political aspects of the war and the way it was mismanaged, we see real patriotism, and how young men become hardened soldiers quickly. We also see a nation ravaged by the brutality of a communist revolution.
What can be said about the Viet Nam War that hasn’t already been said? Read Srmper Fi and you’ll find out!
Just liked it because it told what the guys had to go thru. They were treated bad when they came home.
Great account of being a Vietnam era marine. Great accounts of battle and the change the country went through in the late 60’s.
True as far as Vietnam war is concerned. Very true to form.
Brought me back in country. Love it!
I enjoyed this book but it took me back to the bad old days. Too many memories of friends and a really crappy time in our history. Worth reading especially for those 40 and under to help round out their lack of historical knowledge.
HAVING SERVED AS A MARINE IN VIETNAM AT THE SAME TIME AS THE BOOKS PORTRAYAL. THIS BOOK TAKES YOU THERE AND TELLS IT LIKE YOU ARE RIGHT IN THE THICK OF IT…I HAVE READ A LOT OF BOOKS THAT ADVERTISE “TELLING IT LIKE IT WAS” AND THE FELL FAR FROM THEIR ADVERTISEMENT…THIS BOOK DELIVERS WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR THAT WAS SO FRUSTRATING….GREAT READ.
Need to old enough to have lived it to appriciate the book.
Not my cup of tea. I’m not the best judge as I
Excellent depiction of what Vietnam and the horror that they experienced. A must read.
Not a well written book. The narrative and the dialogue were not engaging. The story may have had merit, but I could not get past the lack of detail and the stilted pace. No thought was given to phrasing or painting a picture for the reader. Sorry, I don’t have time for this type of writing, There are too many well written books available.
Been there and did it too. Thanks for the memories. Good and bad that they were and are. Life is like that. Girene or grunt all the same blood. Red White and Blue
A good report of the daily life in the bush of a combat marine in Vietnam. Praying helped them through the horror of war. A bit simplistic about the politics of that time, but realistic about their personal reception back home.
Overall a good read.
Been there done that and still reading can’t help it too realistic!!
Really enjoyed it. Hated our government’s prosecution of the war and it is correct that politicians can not prosecute a war. Professional soldiers need to do that or the body count will climb.
A wonderful depiction of a Marine in Vietnam, made me laugh and cry a very genuine story.
Was a good book that portyraded what really went on.
