This was a re-read for me. I have most all of Griffith’s book in hardback and the rest on my Kindle. When this one showed up on sale for my Kindle, I ordered it and read it again. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it pulled me back into the Corps series on my book shelves, The characters, real and fictitious are fascinating. Mr Griffith’s knowledge of history and geography are amazing. I strongly recommend the book with a warning. Be prepared to either buy, or check out from your library the rest of the series. Impossible to resist.
I have read this entire series and I am a BIG Griffin fan. I try to read all of his books.
I have ready other of Mr. Griffith’s books about the Marine Corps. I have found them all absorbing and, as a Navy brat, realistic. My father was on a gunboat in the Yangtze in the mid-thirties, before fighting in the Pacific throughout WWII so the book had a special appeal for me, much as The Sand Pebbles did. If you appreciate military fiction with believable characters and an attention to detail, you will enjoy this novel and others by Mr. Griffith.
Brought back memories from my past. I was the last of the China Hands, having been stationed on the Republic of China from 1959-1962. The military characters were true to form. Great read. Jung Hau Ming Guo.
Excellent. Identifies the characters for a half dozen or more future novels. An essential read.
Great story by a great storyteller.
I found it to be a true story of ” old corpd msrines”. If you weant to se how to orotect our freedom, read nmo further.
A page turner. Enjoyed it thoroughly. But then, I was a corpsman and still enjoy being around these guys. Semper Fi.
I thought it was very good and read the rest of the series, only wish there were many more in this series.
I loved this book!!!!!! All WEB’S books
Griffin is a great story-teller. Grabs you from page one!
All of his series books are a “must Read.”
Original WEB Griffin. A must read for historical fiction of WWII buffs
W.E.B. Griffin spreads magic on every book he produces. I have read multiple series more than once just to enjoy the stories again.
loved it!
This is a novel from W.E.B. Griffin’s heyday. It is filled with compelling characters, lots of military background, but not excessive combat. Mostly it covers the lives of the interesting characters that inhabit Griffin’s universe. And what a universe it is.
Griffin consummately weaves his fictional characters in with historical events in a very satisfying and rewarding manner. He brings the pages of history alive in a way few authors can achieve.
Warning: you will not be able to read just one novel in this series. Unfortunately, Griffin either lost interest or motivation. The series ultimately ends on a sour note with unresolved situations. But Semper Fi is paramount Griffin. Open it up, break out the popcorn, and be prepared to be entertained.
