Julian Tremaine, the Earl of Basingstoke, is a notorious rake; Lady Jane Bennett is a spinster with a spotless reputation. Neighbors since childhood, they’d always expected to marry. They’d been the best of friends, and when Julian experienced a string of tragedies, Jane had been the one he’d turned to for comfort. However, when her father died the year she turned eighteen, Julian hadn’t known … how to be there for her the way she’d been there for him. Instead of marrying her and giving her the protection of his wealth and title, he’d run away, leaving her destitute and alone. Broken-hearted and disappointed, Jane has learned to fend for herself and vowed never to love again.
Now, seven years later, circumstances have thrown them into each other’s paths once again. Julian has realized what a mistake he’d made and wants a chance to show her that’s she’s the only woman he’s ever loved. However, thoroughly independent and stubborn Jane would rather be alone than make a mistake of her own.
The most charming rake in London is waging a tireless campaign to win the heart of the most confirmed spinster. Will she give in to his advances or be the one to break his heart this time?

When you need your best friend the most and they run away, life changes. Such was for Jane, who had grown up next door to Julian and they had always expected to marry. She had been there for him through all his losses of his family but when her father passed away he had left her.
Now seven years later after surviving the best way she could, she runs into him again. Jane is chaperoning an American heiress and Julian’s friend asks to be introduced. When he sees her again, he realizes he still cares about her and sets off to regain her trust and affections.
But can she ever forgive him or believe he will not run off again? After all he has established a reputation for himself.
A story of love found and trying to begin again. I read this through booksprout.
I enjoyed this story and especially the sweet and strong character of Jane. I loved the way she persevered and managed after her father’s death and Julian’s abandonment. I really wanted Julian to have to grovel for Jane’s forgiveness , trust, and heart after the way he left and then lived it up in London. I kept reminding myself that he was only 20 and a newer lord at the start, so maybe I could be a little kinder in my assessment of him. Still, I would have found it harder to let him in again. Sweet short story, and I hope Jane gets an HEA. (Not sure I trust Julian to give it to her!)

Being blind to what is around you can cause so many problems.
This is a super quick book to read Lady Jane Bennett is our spinster and Julian Tremaine is our rake who left Jane high and dry when she needed him the most. Now years later he is trying to win her back. For such a short story the two main characters go back and forth never really connecting till the end. I enjoyed the story and oh yes just to let you know there is some heat in it too. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I liked the heroine, Jane. She is kind, thoughtful, caring and giving. After her best friend, whom she had an understanding of marriage, betrayed her and walked away after her father died she was alone in the world. For eight years she struggled to make ends meet. In her mid-twenties, she was on the shelf and she knew she would always be a spinster. That was until he waltzes into her life again. Julian knew he loved Jane but at twenty years old and new to his title, he got scared and took off to London. He left behind the best thing that ever happened to him. Seeing Jane again after so long awoke feeling he thought he extinguished by his debauchery. Jane still hurt after all these years could not bring herself to forgive him. She was not the only one Julian mistreated. His younger brother Ethan was in South America after Julian served him harsh cutting damning words about their deceased family members. Julian was in a pickle. I honestly think that the author made it too easy for Julian to get back into the good graces of Jane. I wish Jane had been able to really let him feel the full weight of what his betrayal did to her when she had no one else in the world to rely on. Overall it is an interesting quick read.
Second chance at love? Jane and Julian grew up together and always expected to marry. Jane was there for him when he lost both parents and his sister. Seven years later he meets her again in London. Not even knowing that she was there at many of the soirees he was, and saw him with all the beautiful ladies he had been with over the past seven years. She never wants to get married as she doesn’t believe any man can be faithful. But Julian realizes he never really stopped loving her. Now he has to convince her. The fourth book in the Brides of Scandal series and it just gets better with each new book. This is Julian Tremaine, the Earl of Basingstoke, and Lady Jane Bennett’s second chance at love. But has he really changed will he be there when someone needs him to be? I enjoyed reading this story. I hope there is more to come in this series. Starts out when Jane is 18 and just lost her father and needing her friend and her future by sending a note to Julian. Julian is 20 and only held the title for little over a year but under two when his love of Jane makes him do the most stupidest thing he’s done… promising her his love and their future on the day her dad passed away and the next day he runs. For 7 years he’s in London, drinking and womanizing hoping to erase his past and Jane!
When Julian meets Jane after all these years, she isn’t to happy with him, had vowed to never give her heart away no matter the man. She has been left nothing when her dad passes, no $$ nor dowery only a townhouse. She’s been making ends meet anyway she can sell a few things, host her home and self to family or an American young heiress to Chaperone in society for a titled husband. For years Jane has seen Julian around town dancing with young ladies and some not so innocent women, but he has never noticed her at the same dances. Now when Jane is hosting Emma, Julian uses his connection to Jane for his friend Micheal to meet the heiress but it’s not just Michael getting something out of the meeting, it’s Julian too and his deaden feelings come roaring back to life.
James’s heart was shredding when the coward ran away and now he’s back and wants to start right where they left off…. Is Jane’s heart heal able or is she too harden from the past to ever open herself for more heartache???????
